the amount that ace changes after sabo's death is evil to me. like ace becomes good yeah. ace becomes kinder and better because he's taking on his brother as a person. ace becomes More Like Sabo. sabo's ghost haunted ace in that ace took part of sabo on because he thought that's what he had to do to be better and not fail his brothers again. he could have been anyone else if he didnt fill that gap but instead he tattoos sabo into his skin and lives by the philosophy inspired by his death. and yes it does kill him eventually. never stop grief enmeshing !!!!!

like is the change a bad thing no. is it important for him to grow into this version of himself Yes. but like. hoooly shit it does make me mourn for the angry kid version of ace that couldnt be loved until he changed into something more palatable. and it does make me think about the way ace is treated like a de facto adult and the limited space he had to grieve his best friend before he had to become A Brother and couldnt be a grieving kid anymore. his anger was irresponsible because there was nobody else around to shoulder that responsibility anymore.

also though theres like a dire lack of deage ace fic which i get because its hard to account for luffy its hard to account for like. the mistrust its messy as fuck like i get it. but ohhh my god. the amount that ace changes makes this really fucked up but especially for the wbp because when ace joins the crew he essentially acts in a pre-luffy state where he's more violent and meaner and less of the him that we know. and they still want to keep him. and being loved and wanted despite your anger at the world is NOT a sensation that child ace is familiar with.

most common op character to deage is sanji for whom this is insanely applicable and point 1 is REALLY well done in ballast by islandfeeder like the impermanence angle and the idea that the help you give is temporary and maybe helpful. like that fic is so well done and it makes me so emotional

always a huge fan of when a creator avoids plot armour accusations by having their character be increasingly aware that the only reason they're not dead yet is because they're being "saved" for something "greater"
