Kara Danvers was in love with her best friend. It was nothing new, not the product of some grand revelation. It was quieter than that. A slow realization, growing in the back of her mind. A warm glow, every time Lena smiled. A flurry of butterflies whenever she laughed. A deep, aching pain when she suffered. Little things, all adding up, until somewhere along the way Lena's happiness became more important than Kara's own.
Whether it was something as simple as romantic attraction, or more complex, Kara wasn't sure. Krypton didn't really differentiate the two like Earth did, and Kara still struggled sometimes to draw the line between friends and romance. But it was Lena that Kara thought of, when love songs came on over the radio, and it was Lena that Kara imagined spending the rest of her life with. Kisses, and sex, and dates, and anniversaries, all seemed irrelevant in comparison to those simple truths.
There wasn't any particular urgency in the feeling. At one timeâafter telling Lena her true identityâKara had considered coming clean about her feelings as well. But before she'd been able to work up the courage, Lena had stolen Myriad, and things after that had devolved so thoroughly that Kara nearly gave up any hope of something between them. When she returned from the Phantom Zone, again, Kara had nearly confessed. But things between them had still felt so uncertain, and by the time they stabilized out there was Nxly to deal with.
Now, though, things had finally quieted down. Alex's wedding had come and gone. Lena had moved into Kara's apartment, while she was trapped in the Phantom Zone, and never bothered moving back out. They shared a bed most nights, falling asleep and waking up in each other's arms. Living together was easy; within days they'd fallen into a rhythm so easily in was like they'd been cohabitating for years.
Physical affection between them had come so naturally, it seemed like something long overdue. A kiss on the cheek or forehead; a hand at the other's waist as they slipped by; cuddling on the sofa, or the bed, after a long day. Alex's eyebrows had just about leapt off her face when Lena had seated herself in Kara's lap one game night, burying her face in Kara's neck as the game wound down. Kara had laughed off several questions that night, and even more comments in the days that followed.
"We're friends," Kara assured everyone who asked. She could never bring herself to add the "just". "Just friends" seemed insufficient for someone she was in love with. And as Kara watched Lena nowâcurled up on the sofa, reading a bookâshe found herself dwelling on that. She was in love with her best friend. She turned the though over in her mind, holding it gently, feeling the soft warmth radiating from it.
Lena looked up, dark hair falling away from her face. "What?" she asked with a soft laugh, noticing Kara's attention.
Kara just shook her head, smiling. "Nothing," she answered. "I just like looking at you."
Kara could hear the quiet flutter of Lena's heart at her words, and easily saw the pink blush staining her cheeks. "Dork," Lena retorted gently with a shake of her head and turned back to her book, still smiling broadly.
Kara crossed the distance between them, sitting down on the sofa beside Lena. Without a single word or moment of hesitation, Lena shifted so she was leaning against Kara's side. Reflexively, Kara raised an arm to welcome her in, resting it around Lena's shoulders as she settled. As she did, Lena let out a tiny little humâa sigh of contentmentâand Kara felt as though her heart might burst with affection.
Kara Danvers was in love with her best friend, and she was pretty sure her best friend was in love with her too. Neither of them had said as much, but that was okay. There was plenty of time to figure it out, and until then this was pretty nice too.
I'M BACK
For those unaware, my account got nuked March 17th, during all the chaos with the reblogs update. But I'm back now! Hopefully it doesn't happen again, but just in case I'll be leaving up my backup account (@faelyn42-backup) for the time being.
Edit: Okay so it looks like getting nuked removed me from everyone's follows. Sideblog seems unaffected, thankfully, but if you were following my main (this one) before you may want to double-check that you still are. Weird-but-good news is, everyone's still showing up in my list of followers, so it shouldn't be too hard to give everyone a heads up.
Day 29: Thread
Lenaâs not sure when she first became aware of it. To her mind, it was just aways there, a shining, damning red beacon. She canât remember her mother ever talking about it. Sheâd probably just brushed it off as a childâs fancy. Lena had been only four. Surely it was nothing more than a daydream, as real as the monsters under her bed and the fairies who visited her dollhouse. After all, how could her thread point straight up?
By the time Lena reaches the Luthors, she doesnât bring it up very often. The Luthors donât put much stock in soulmates. Any of Lenaâs excited babbles about who they might be were tempered with reminders about upholding the Luthor family name. Sheâll marry who sheâll marry. After all, Lillian is so quick to remind her, not all soulmates are romantic. Privately, Lena has another reason the fantasy has lost its sheen.
Lillian and Lionel were connected.
Lenaâs not so sure she wants what they have.
Even so, she wonders about them often. Maybe they havenât been born yet, and thatâs why her thread points up. Will they meet when Lena is already old? What will they be like? Do they play sports? Do they like her favorite songs? Are they pretty?
She never once thinks to wonder if theyâre human.
Superman reveals himself to the world, and Lena eyes trace up that cord, always irrevocably pointing up.
Lena tries to move on. She accepts the reality she knows, the reality of Earth. She accepts the lifetime of empty smiles, and grasping, greedy faces. She accepts the boarding schools and pressure and Lexâs sudden absence.
Lena wakes up one morning when she is thirteen and her thread is pointing due West. She stares at that line until Veronica bursts into their shared room, ranting about one of the nuns. Lena nods along to Ronnieâs fury, makes her bed, and for the first time since sheâd arrived at the Luthorâs, she doesnât feel so alone.
Lex grows angrier and more distant by the day. He visits become rare, and Lena begins to dread them. To dread her brotherâs cold stare and vitriol. Lena watches her thread vibrate ever so gently, and thinks aliens canât all be that bad. She knows it even then: one day, Lenaâs brother will make her choose. She just doesnât expect it to be so violent.
Lena flees after Metropolis. Sheâs a big girl; she can admit it. She flees. She takes Jackâs hand and runs and pretends she can ignore her brotherâs shadow just as much as the thread around her finger. The news tells her about a new Kryptonian in National City, about an alien invasion thwarted, and maybe Lena knew then. Maybe she just chose not to accept it. Of course, there would be another Kryptonian. Another Kryptonian in a city West of Metropolis, west of the school the Luthors had picked for her. Lillian had always tried to teach her, hadnât she? It was a red string of fate, after all. And fate loves a joke.
Lena takes back her family company, establishes a new headquarters in National City, and pretends that thread doesnât feel like a collar around her throat.
She gets a fresh badge of shame with each giddy stutter of her heartbeat as she watches the thread. It spins around her, now that sheâs this close. What is she doing, Lena wonders. Picking up groceries? Going to work? Buying a coffee? Itâs the speed of the movement that finally convinces her, that puts the last nail into the coffin of her reasonable doubt. Only Supergirl could cross the city that fast.
Sometimes, just for the hell of it, Lena turns on the news, tracking Supergirlâs position in the city, and angles her hand like a compass. They line up every time.
She wonders why Supergirl hasnât sought her out. Surely it would be easyâa woman of her ability following a clear trail. Maybe she already has. Maybe sheâs realized what Lena has about fate. Maybe sheâs too scared to find out how far the family resemblance really goes.
Lena is drowning in workâthe relocation still hasnât been finalized these weeks later, and now the Venture is a smoking wreck in a corn field just outside of town. Itâs enough to have gotten Supermanâs attention, and Lena has little doubt that attention will soon sweep to her, whether directly or through Lois Lane. So she preemptively puts together a file on her contributions to the Venture and tries to get through the rest of her expense reports before the interrogation begins. Sheâs still only a few inches into her latest mountain when Jess announces her newest guests. So theyâve sent Clark Kent, have they? That doesnât bode well.
Lena isnât even really looking at the woman behind himâsome CatCo rookie looking for practical experience. Sheâs pretty. And she has a gentle, sweet way of speaking that Lena finds oddly endearing. Were it not for her choice of career and association with Clark Kent, Lena might have even tried flirting. Instead, she reaches for her venture file.
The rookieâKara Danversâgasps and stops dead in her tracks. And when Lena follows her eyes, she finds herself staring straight at her own ring finger. And then she looks at Karaâs hand. Oh.
Superman sent a bit more than just Clark Kent.
Kara Zor-El is four years old in her ukr's study, working on her calculus, when she asks him about the red string leading from her finger up into the sky. When she does, he gets a weird look on his face and starts asking her a lot of questions about the thread. Then he goes and gets her ieiu and they go into the bedroom to talk.
A long time later, they both come out and ask some more questions about the string, which Kara tries to answer as best she can. Eventually, they sit her down and explain what it meansâthat her soulmate is on a different planet.
Kara isn't sure why they're acting like it's bad news, that her soulmate is an alien. As far as she's concerned, it's the coolest thing ever. When she goes to school the next day and tells her friends, they all agree. A couple of the older kids make fun of her for it, and call her names, but Kara ignores them. She knows they're probably just jealous, because their soulmates are regular old Kryptonians.
Kara starts spending a lot of time looking through the Science Guild's records of alien species, wondering which one her soulmate might belong to. Do they have soft fur, or feathers, or colorful scales? Do they have lots of eyes, or maybe long antennae?
Her Uncle Non teases her, and says that her soulmate is probably a giant bug, or a sentient pile of ooze. Ieiu yells at him for it, and says he's being mean. Privately though, Kara doesn't think it would be so bad even if her soulmate is a big bug or a pile of ooze. Bugs can be pretty, with their shiny carapaces and delicate wings. And a pile of ooze would probably give great hugs.
Either way it doesn't matter. Whatever they look like, they're the person Kara is destined to spend the rest of her life with. She'll love them, no matter what.
Ukr start taking Kara on trips, to visit other planets, and at the same time Ieiu starts teaching her about different alien customs and laws. Kara knows what they're doing: preparing her for life with an alien soulmate. She decides it's a good idea and starts her own studies, learning as many alien languages as she can.
She asks, sometimes, if they can follow the red thread and visit the planet her soulmate is from. Her parents tell her she's not ready, that she needs to be grown before she can meet her soulmate.
As she gets loaded into the pod, her world dying all around her, Kara can't help but think that fate is cruel. Cruel to take away her family, and her world. Cruel that her podâdestined for Earthâis following the red thread that leads from her finger. Cruel that she would get knocked off-course and spend over twenty years adrift in the Phantom Zone.
When Kara finally arrives on Earth, she doesn't go looking for her soulmate. She can do the math. Whoever her soulmate is, it's been twenty years since she was supposed to meet them. Odds are, they gave up a long time ago, and found someone else to be with. And even if they haven't, they won't want a grief-stricken child like her. A part of Kara wants to hate her soulmate, for taking away her home, but it hurts too much to really think about.
It takes time, but Kara trains herself to ignore the thread tied around her finger. That her soulmate never comes looking for her, she decides, is proof that they've moved on without her. Eventually though, the old hurt dulls, and Kara finds herself wondering about them like when she was younger. Only now, instead of what species they are, she wonders what her soulmate's life is like. What kind of work do they do? Are they married? Do they have any kids? Are they happy, without her?
When Kara comes out as Supergirl, it's a blessing. It's something to distract her, to throw herself into so she doesn't spend time wondering about her soulmate. She meets James, who privately admits to her that his soulmate is Clark.
"Platonic," he's quick to clarify, and Kara pretends it doesn't sting that her cousin has two soulmates while she functionally has none. Still though, it leaves them both free to pursue something together, and that too is a nice sort of distraction.
By the time of the Venture explosion, Kara has all but forgotten the idea of her soulmate. She notices, once, that the thread has moved closer, and that her soulmate is in National City.
Her resolve holds true though. Whoever they are, they've obviously moved on, and Kara isn't going to turn into some kind of homewrecker over a piece of string. She puts the matter firmly out of her mindâso firmly, in fact, that it catches her entirely by surprise when she registers the red thread tied around Lena Luthor's finger.
There's a long pause, as Lena follows Kara's gaze. Her eyes widen as she tracks the red strand of fate all the way to Kara's own hand. Her gaze darts up to Kara's faceâa brief moment of open shockâbefore her expression slams shut like an angry door.
"So," Lena Luthor says and crosses her arms. The folder lies forgotten on her desk. "Is this supposed to intimidate me?"
"I'm sorry?" Clark asks. He sounds genuinely confused by the abrupt change in subject, but Lena isn't looking at him.
Kara is thrown. By Lena's reaction, by her age, by the fact that she's Lena Luthor. But her mind latches onto one thing and her brow creases. "You knew?"
"Of course I knew," Lena spits back, and Kara's trying to figure out why she's acting like they're sworn enemies instead of, y'know, soulmates. "You dart around the city at a hundred miles an hour. My finger is a damn helicopter half the time."
"Hold on-" Clark starts, alarmed by Lena's accusation, but Kara interrupts him.
"Why didn't you reach out?"
Lena laughs, a bitter note spoiling the sound. "Are you serious?" A beat passes, and Lena stares at her as she realizes, "You are. You really had no idea it was me."
"I thought..." Kara starts to explain, but she trails off when she realizes she doesn't know how to finish the sentence. Lena seems to understand, though, and the hard lines of her face seem to soften.
In the silence that follows, Clark tries again. "I'm sorry, what are we talking about?"
Lena's eyes don't leave Kara's as she replies, "Threads of fate. It seems Miss Danvers and I have one in common."
A delayed "Oh" is apparently all Clark can say to that.
There's another long stretch of silence, which Lena and Kara mostly spend staring at each other. Kara shifts uncomfortably under her gaze, and fidgets with the frames of her glasses. Eventually though, Lena takes a deep breath and says with an overly pleasant smile, "Well. We certainly have a lot to talk about, don't we?"
Me: "Oh huh, looks like I accidentally turned off comment emails for Ao3. Whoops. Anyway, there's probably only two or three anywa-

So, will the Supercorp AU not also go up on AO3?
I suppose it could, potentially. But I wasn't really planning to upload it there, because it's kinda short and I didn't really put too much effort into it. Like, in my mind, AO3 is more... official? So I don't really want to start uploading every little thing I write. Whereas Tumblr is less formal, so that's where I'm putting the more casual/random/unplanned stuff.
You just found out that your roommate is a literal god(dess). One who is completely unknown and has not a single follower, because apparently they tried that before and quote: "they were so annoying."
Ask and ye shall receive (one of them, at least)
"You're..."
"A goddess," Kara finished.
"Right." Lena's eyes weren't on the other woman as she said it though. Instead, her attention was locked onto the innocent white flowers blooming against green leaves. Flowers which Lena had watched blossom before her very eyesâas if she had been watching a time-lapse. The apparent cause: Kara, leaning over the potted plant and blowing gently across its branches. "A goddess."
"Please don't tell anyone," Kara begged with a wince.
Hi! Happy Holidaysâď¸not sure if you still update your side blog so hope itâs ok Iâm asking this here.
Has time and life allowed you a chance to either complete your pass through, or to write new chapters for pt2?
Keeping my fingers crossed you get to a space where you can at least share the first chapter with us in the near future.
Thanks, and you as well! To answer your first question, my sideblog is still very much activeâor at least I still get notifications on it all the same. I just... haven't really had anything to put on there in a while.
To be honest, I haven't written in some time. Some of it it stress, some of it is lack of time or distractions. Butâas with all thingsâonce I fall out of the habit of doing it, it becomes that much harder to get back into that habit.
However, that said, I haven't given up writing altogetherâfar from it. Every day, it feels like, I come up with new ideas for the One Night Stand series (really gotta come up with a name for that). Scenes playing out in my head, worldbuilding concepts that I could use, character arcs that I would love to explore. Not just for Part 2, but Part 3, and 4, and even what an eventual ending/epilogue might look like.
That said, there are a couple one-shots that I'd like to try and finish before I go fully back to One Night Stand. A Polytrix one, that I've left half-finished since August, and a really short Supercorp AU that grabbed me yesterday out of nowhere. With any luck, the latter will be going up on Tumblr in the next few days, and the former will be on AO3 some time after that.
Hi! Hope youâre doing ok. Iâm curious to know what top themes, if any, are you looking to explore in pt 2? Iâm assuming forgiveness is one of them giving the state of supercorpâs relationship at the end of pt1, but that assumption could be wrong.
Hi! Sorry I missed this till now, Tumblr is less than great about actually notifying me when there's an ask. And I'm doing pretty well, thanks for asking!
To be honest, my writing isn't really too focused on themes. I mean sure, they're there, but they're not something I plan for very often. More often, I'll focus on character arcs, and how they interact with each other.
As for Supercorp, and the state of their relationship, I don't want to spoil too much. But, I do think that they're in a very awkward position wherein they both want to forgive and move on, they just don't know how. So, if I had to assign a theme, it would be less about forgiveness and more about rebuilding trust and finding a new equilibrium together.
Just wanted to say how excited I am for part 2!
Thanks! I'll admit to getting a bit distracted recently, and not working on it for a while. But the plot framework I've made is still in place, which means I can pretty much pick up right where I left off. And I should be getting a lot more free time here in a couple weeks or so, which means I'll hopefully be able to work on it more often.

Alright, another progress update on Part 2 of my Supercorp fic! Happy to say that I've finally finished laying out the broad strokes in terms of plot, which means I'm finally ready to start writing in earnest! And it only took me like five months!
Anyway, Chapter 1 is already in a finished, ready-to-post state, and I've started work on Chapter 2. I won't be posting them immediately though. I'd like to finish my final pass of Part 1 first; I might have fallen behind on that a bit. Whoops.
Unfortunately, the writing software I'm using for my final pass (Ellipsus) lags pretty badly on my phone. Which means I can really only feasibly work on it during the evening. Doesn't mean I'm just not going to be writing during the day, though. I'm actually going to do my best to get as far as I can on Part 2 before posting, and build up an actual buffer like I said I would try to like a dozen times in Part 1. Hoping this attempt is more successful, lol.
Anyway, best case scenario, Part 2 will go up next week, but it could be later depending on IRL stuff. Almost certainly this month, though (don't want to guarantee anything, as that feels like tempting fate).
I tempted fate.
So, apparently "sometime" this month was a little optimistic. The ADHD is strong with me, and a bunch of IRL stress has been making it harder to wrangle than normal. I've made it to Chapter 35 (Thanksgiving) on my final pass though, and I'm about halfway through Chapter 2 of Part 2. So I'm not just sitting on my ass, whatever it may seem like. Hopefully it's not too much longer before I'm ready to start posting; fingers crossed.

Reblog if youâre grateful for your commenters <3
Suddenly remembering that I said I'd use this blog as a place to put updates for my Supercorp fic. So, here's a progress update!
Roughly halfway through my final pass on Part 1, up to Chapter 22. Most of these are just general tweaks to fix awkward wording, and correcting typos. Also adding translation footnotes whenever appropriate, and reworking a couple descriptions to make locations more canon-accurate.
First few "episdodes" of Part 2 are plotted out with rough outlines, and a number of scenes already written. Including the first chapter, the rough draft of which is mostly finished at this point.
I have character arcs for Winn, J'onn, M'gann, and Mon-El planned out, while continuing the arcs I started in Part 1 for Kara, Lena, James, Alex, and Maggie. Mon-El specifically is probably gonna take up a lot of the spotlight in Part 2âlike Alex did in Part 1âbut the focus is still of course going to be Kara and Lena.
I have plans for how I want to finish up the Cadmus storyline, and make room for the Daxamite Invasion arc. This involves the issues of Jeremiah, Lillian, Henshaw, and the remaining two Cadmus bases established in Part 1 (and possibly a way to syncretize it a bit with the comics version).
Did a bunch of behind-the scenes worldbuilding, to hopefully add some more depth and help with internal consistency. Including a rework of Daxam's history and it's relationship with Krypton. Basically just trying to make them less two-dimensional as antagonists.
On that note, I'm currently working on how to adapt the Daxam Invasion storyline. I have some ideas on how I want to resolve it, but first I need to figure out how to lead into it. Probably just need to rewatch the relevant episodes for inspiration.
Not sure how much longer I'll need before I'm ready to start writing (and posting) in earnest, unfortunately. My sister's wedding is in a couple weeks, so that's taking up an inordinate amount of my time. Hopefully it won't be too much longer, though!
Parts 1&2, part 3
Snow White parked her station wagon on the curb outside Regina's house, and frowned thoughtfully at the yellow bug parked a few feet in front of her. Emma had called the previous night, to let Snow know she wasn't going to be home, but Snow hadn't thought anything of it. It wasn't unusual for Emma to spontaneously pull all-nighters at the station or on patrol. The fact that her car was still at Regina's, though, was unexpected.
Puzzling over that mystery, Snow got out of her own car and started down the walkway to Regina's door. No sooner did she get a few steps in, though, than the door opened. Snow stopped in her tracks, blinking in surprise. "Emma."

A followup to the previous parts
Henry smiled as he sat at the dinner table, despite the math homework laid out before him. Beside him sat Emma, poring over the textbook with a wrinkled brow in the hopes of helping him understand the problem. But that wasn't why he was smiling. Henry was smiling because of the quiet, musical hum drifting out of the kitchen as his mom cooked dinner. There was no real melody to it, just an aimless tune that faded in and out as Regina moved from task to task.
Most Gothamites, when presented with the pitch-black silhouette of a Bat in their window, reacted one of two ways. Criminals, if they were smart, would normally break into a sprint for the nearest exit. Civilians tended to scream, and stammer out some variation of "What do you want?"
Selina Kyle was not exactly an average Gothamite. Where others saw mysterious and dark spirits of justice, she saw her on-and-off-again (currently off) boyfriend and his gaggle of children, both legal and otherwise. So, when she crossed from her kitchen to her living roomâmug of tea in handâand caught glimpse a scowling shadow in her window, she merely gave a small flinch and raised a hand to calm her racing heart.
