          told me I was going to { l o s e }                   the FIGHT.
âHopefully soâ Robb did think the old man could have gotten close to finding his beloved daughter, he looked like the kind of person who would do that. The kind of person who fights, kicks and screams before ever letting walk over the ones he loves.âHeyâŠâ he said placing one hand on her shoulder âdonât say thatâŠitâs okay to mourn him, Faelynn. Itâs okay to be sad because of him being gone.â Yes, he really thought so. âDonât do that, donât hold it in.â Robb stopped himself afraid of the effect his reaction could have in her.
Instead of pulling away from his touch, like she mightâve if she weren't so tired or so sad, she found herself leaning into it slightly. But, for a while she didnât reply to him and rather just let the silence take over and let the echo of his words linger in her head. Donât hold it in. She wanted to though and it was something she wanted so desperately because she didnât want to be weak; to let her emotions get the best of her, or worse distract her because in this world you werenât allowed to or you might pay the ultimate price. Your life. âI hafta. Thereâs no time to mourn, it ainât somethinâ I can do. I gotta be strong-- for me, for Fleet. To survive.â
You never believed in me, so I proved you wrong.
but youâre not here to see it || krj; Ten Word Story (via krj-writes)
âI wouldnât say i miss them, no.â he said shaking his head lightly, they werenât his family or friends after all. It seemed as she was hoping he would say yes, and maybe shed a little tear or smile with melancholy but he didnât have that for them, he liked them sure but they were practically strangers who did a lot for him. âI really hope theyâre alright thoughâŠbut honestly I think all that matters is whether they found each other in the end.â that was pretty much all he had to say about them being alive or not, as harsh as it might sound. At first Rob felt as if she hadnât really said that, and he was hoping to be right. He didnât know how to react to her confession. âthatâsâŠiâm sorry.â
Fae wanted to say that they were probably fine but she couldnât. She didnât know them and in this world chances of that were unlikely. Hell, she was certain she ought to be dead by now, or even worse undead, but for some strange reason she avoided all odds. âMaybe they did.â She replied softly, but she knew that she didnât believe in the words she was saying. The world didnât work that way anymore, where good things happened, and everyday that passed the living got outnumbered and the awful truth was they probably were dead. Just like Winston. âItâs fine,â Was it though? In this world, yes, it was the norm. âHeâs not the first to die and certainly not the last. This is the world now.â

âErrâto be honest, they arenât that nice but theyâre okay, theyâre good people even Marla has her momentsâ it took him a while to remember Faelynn didnât know their names, he readjusted himself on his seat and cleared his throat âThe daughter, sheâsâŠcomplicated.â code for bitch, at least most of the time for Robb. He didnât even utter that word, it was bad enough to be even thinking about it. âScott, the old manâŠis moody more than anything, but he knows how to cook.â he sounded so apologetic, but on his defenseâŠhe was. He was truly sorry that he wouldnât see the old man again. Hell, he even missed marla a little bit (though most of the time he didnât care.) âI donât know, maybe you would have liked themâŠi know i did.â
"Do you miss âem?â She asked softly, it was none of her business -- none of this was -- but she couldnât help but let the questions fall out of her mouth. When it came to real living people she was curious; at the beginning of the outbreak they ran into people quite often but the longer they lived in this and the more they got acclimated to the current state of the world seeing other survivors was a rarity. The last survivor they saw before Fleet was Winston---- the very thought of him brought a wave of sadness crashing over her. âFleet and I, we were w'th somebody else before we got âere. He didnât make it.â She surprised herself with her proclamation but maybe she just needed to say it out loud, to remind herself that it had happened; that it wasnât just a bad dream but a reality.
         who we [ are ]
& who we need to be to SURVIVEâ-
are two very different people .
He guessed he had been there for a long time, a good three weeks hiding in that old shithole. Robb had been caught stealing, which didnât happen often and couldnât happen again. âI guess it has been a few week since i got here.â he answered, keeping it casual as he would say. Actually the guy who lived here, whose name was scott and talked about his daughters every night before going to bed (or so robb presumed.), took him in. One day he went looking for supplies as he did every day and never came back. His daughter had dissipated the night before, she was the oldest of three and the only one alive. He assumed the old man had decide to off himself. Marla was nice, nice enough for him of course and he honestly didnât think sheâs dead. she got tired, like everyone and decided to take some time off of dealing with her dad, and dealing with robb probably. They didnât really like each other, not with their clothes onâŠno. âYou see, iâll be leaving this place soon toâŠâ he said nodding to himself âI think itâs the right thing to do, the old man will probably come back soonâ lies.â and his daughter might come back too.â not so much of a lie.
Fae nodded, âI see.â She drawled out slowly as she continued to work the knife within her hands before letting her eyes take in her handy work. Her hand that wasnât gripping the handle hovered above the steel letting her finger lightly graze over it deciding that she was done and it was sharp enough. ââEre ya go.â She said suddenly holding it out for him to take and she took that time to look at him. Sure she looked at him before but you could tell a lot about someone by the way they carried themselves if you were paying enough attention; but earlier she was distracted. By the situation and her emotions from the vents that had transpired earlier that day. âWhat are they like? -- Ta people who live âere.â
Fleet just gave her a smile, before taking a step backwards. âI'ma gather the stuff,â he then announced and finally turned around and left the room, still trying to be careful, quiet.. all that jazz. It wouldnât be the most pleasant thing if Robb woke up now. Bumping into him, probably having to explain whatâs upââ that kind of stuff could take a while, and Fleet, like that impatient and moody child he could sometimes be, just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.Â
He headed towards their roomââ well, okay, the room they slept inââ and almost instantly started shoving their belongings into a backpack. There wasnât much to pack, as they stayed only one night and had left most of the stuff in the truck, so after about three minutes, he was done and ready to go. He looked around the room and sighed. It was niceââ he couldnât deny that. But the truck wasnât all that bad, either. Fleet swung the backpack over his shoulder and left the room.Â
After walking around the house for a while, he found her outside, standing there, and looking really nice in the sunlightââ he thought. He approached her, a smile appearing on his lips before he opened his mouth to speak.Â
âHere yaâ go,â he said, handing her the gun she had pointed at Robb earlier, and then added: Â "Lead the way.â
âOkay,â Fae nodded, âIâll meet ya outside. Iâm going ta move the truck, ta hide it. â She concluded as she watched him walk away; leaving her alone in the the room thinking about how much they needed this day to run smoothly, to finally catch a break and find the supplies they needed. Most importantly gas which was hard to come by these days. A sigh escaped her lips at the thought as she turned her attention towards the bag that was left on the ground. She crouched down to pick it up and one by one pulled out the weapons to return them to where they belonged. It was only after she was done and left with an empty backpack did she finally make her own departure from the room with the bag in hand.Â
She headed out of the house and towards the truck sliding into the drivers seat taking no time before starting the engine and driving it off the property. It wasn't ideal but they couldn't risk leaving it back there -- with their supplies inside -- or risk taking it to their destination and running out of gas. Plus it was quicker to go through the forest anyways. She found a vacant spot that wasn't visible to anyone passing by and parked it deciding this was as good as a spot as any. It also wasnât too far away and turned out to only be approximately 5 minute walk back to the farm where she waited for Fleet.Â
As soon as she saw him approaching a smile reached her face; similar to the one that always appeared when he was around. âThanks,â She replied taking the gun in her hand and keeping it there just in case they stumbled on any walkers during their journey. Her eyes scanned the outer vicinity of the forest before she started in the direction she had went the previous night, walking through the open entrance -- or rather a break between two trees that was big enough to be a walk way.Â
She weaved her way through the trees with an ease; as if she was made for the woods and then came to a sudden halt before she turned to face her companion. âLook Fleet, deer tracks.â She proclaimed with a bright smile on her face as she pointed a finger in the direction of the ground where sure enough laid a row of tracks belonging to a deer. âI reckon if we got ânough time afta we might be able ta track it.â

somehow, despite the obvious melancholic feel to it, the girl didnât sound sad at all. It was her southern voice, her honeyed tongued tone of voice that only calmed him down. âWellâŠâ he said coughing once more, he tended to do that whenever he couldnât find the answerâŠsometimes when he was lying âTaking the easy way out isnât necessarily wrong.â his tone also changed, it became much more nurturing. He always had a warm voice, but this was differentâŠ.it always was, it was like trying to convince a child that itâs alright to make mistakes. Truly Bob didnât really think about it all that much, he didnât want to. âI think we should probably talk about something else.â suddenly some kind of urge struck him, his mother would have probably smack him had he said something like that while talking to her âiâm not very good at this.â
Taking a deep breath Faelynn pushed away all the thoughts that were trying to pull her down and went back to sharpening the knife in her hands not bothering to look over at Robb as he spoke, âProbably.â She nodded in agreement but for a few moments she just let the silence consume them not bothering to offer up anything else to talk about. In fact part of her just wanted to stay in the silence but the other part; the part that feared the dark thoughts plaguing her mind had her speaking once again. âHave you been here -- in this place -- for a while?â She questioned but the answer didnât matter much to her she just wanted to ask for the sake of asking.
She was right. He knew that he shouldnât be doing this, but he always knew that he wouldnât feel bad if he did. It was all about surviving, and not the school kind. It wasnât the âoh, after five days youâll be free!â or âafter one more week youâll finally graduate and then youâll be free!â There was no date. No one could tell them when things would go back to semi-normal. If they would ever go back to semi-normal, that is. It was all fucked up. The world was a mess, and to survive for as long as you could, you needed to be prepared for everything. The extra weapons and the extra foodââ it was all important. Even if you felt like you had enough, you didnât. There was never enough preparing, never enough of anything that could protect you. And it was Robbâs fault for letting them in. Though, Fleet couldnât say that out loudââ not after the man had let them stay.Â
He didnât tell her any of it. He loved her, he cared about her. He trusted her. He trusted that she knew what she was doingââ because, well, she was good at those things. She was a good leader, so far her plans had been good, and so he didnât see the reason not to rely on her.Â
Fleet bit down on his lower lip, nodding his head slightly, before putting the gun away without a word. He then dropped the backpack to the floor and took few steps away from it, Â letting her know that none of these weapons would be carried out of the house.Â
âOkay,â he agreed to her plan, but after a moment added: âBut weâre taking all of our belongings with us.â Of course. Trust issues. âIn case..â he muttered, though not loud enough for her to hear.
It was difficult not to see the state of unease that Fleet had been in since she had suggested they stay here and truth be told she hated that. After all everything she did was for him; to protect him. All she ever wanted was to make sure he was alright or as alright as one could be in a world ravaged by the dead who walked; a world where the smell of rotting flesh plagued the atmosphere. Whatever she could do to give him a least some momentary happiness sheâd do it without hesitation. Which is why she knew they had to stay here, continuing their journey yesterday was too dangerous. Too risky. Had it just been her? Maybe but it hadnât been just her and Fleet was too important to her to ever risk his life.
âââCourse.â She nodded and not just because she wanted to put him at ease but also because it was the smart move. While she didnât think Robb was a danger she didnât fully trust him and she wouldnât put them in a position where they could be vulnerable. âIf we head outta âere now we should be able ta leave before dusk.â She added lightly before mapping out a plan in her head. Thatâs how it always was with her; planning, orchestrating the safest way to move forward. It worked though. âThereâs what looks to be a plaza south of âere, spotted it when I was huntinâ yesterdayâ Should be able ta get the necessities; water, food, gas and anything else ya think we might need.â
He didnât expect much of an answer, but he didnât expect it to make her shy away from her curiosity. âI think we should probably talk about something else.â he was starting to feel depressed, a feeling he hated more than anything. He counted all of the options on his head, there wasnât much to talk about and normally he would be up for this topic but not tonight. Robb also noticed her posture was changing, she was gettingâŠnervous and he didnât mean to make her feel bad or offer her a guilt tripâŠ.no, that wasnât his intention at all âListenâŠitâs okay.â he said looking at her once again, this time his eyes examined her hair and features âYou did what you had to do.â
For awhile all she could do was stare ahead, not willing to meet his gaze, and stay composed. The last thing she wanted to do was appear weak. She hardly ever allowed herself moments of true weakness and when she did it was only ever in front of Fleet or by herself. She shouldâve stayed out in the truck to fully let herself feel the impacts the day had on her; to let what had happened sink in but she didnât want to leave Fleet by himself. She was past thinking Robb was an immediate danger but she couldnât be too safe. âMaybe--â She mumbled softly, finally breaking the silence, and turned to face him. âMaybe not. What if itâs jusâ the easy route? We still got choices, ya know, could not be pickinâ the right ones.â
It was just another sleepless night for Fleet. However, this time, it wasnât only because he couldnât fall asleep. It was mostly because he didnât want to. Because falling asleep could mean that he wouldnât wake up againââ mean that Robb would sneak in and kill both of them. And even though the man said he wouldnât, Fleet couldnât be 100% sure. So, instead of taking the risk, he just spent most of the night with his eyes open, silently making plansââ thinking about the morning.Â
When the sun started to rise, he got up, trying to be as quiet and careful as possible. He didnât want to wake Fae up. Before leaving the room, he turned his head and looked over at the sleeping girl. She looked so peaceful, just lying there, with the sunlight falling on her face, her blonde hair. Something about that sight brought a smile to Fleetâs face. But it faded, as he left the room.Â
Somehow, he found himself at the other end of the house, with a backpack and weapons in his hands. He knew it was technically stealing, but come onââ he had done worse. This whole apocalypse had made everyone reckless. And this was nothing compared to all the other things he had done to keep Fae, and himself, alive. Plus, they needed more weapons. The more, the better.Â
The knives were already in the backpack. He was packing the guns when he heard a voice behind him. He stopped, slowly turned around, and then, like nothing ever happened, gave the girl a small smile.
âHey, glad youâre up,â he said, ignoring her question. âReady to take off?â
Faelynn almost rolled her eyes at his blatant attempt at ignoring her question but she wasnât going to let this go; it didnât feel right to steal weapons from a man who had been kind enough to let them stay. He couldâve told them to leave, in fact after the way they had treated him she expected it, but his refusal never came. The whole time he had been nothing but kind to them even when both of them had treated him in a way that didn't deserve his kindness. With that in mind she knew fully well that she wasn't going to just look the other way as he packed weapons that didn't belong to them.
âWe canât jusâ steal his stuff, it ainât right.â Fae muttered as she took a few soft steps towards him, till she was right in front of him. Her hand reached out letting her fingers rest on his, the one that was clasped around one of the guns. "We're goin' ta put 'em back, alright?" She spoke softly, just loud enough for him to hear and she left her hand touching his for awhile, finding comfort in it because it reminded her that she was still here; as if one touch could anchor her to reality instead of curling up into the inner depths of her mind till she was consumed by the darkness that lurked there.Â
Seconds passed just listening to the sounds of them breathing before she made a move to find her voice once again. "-- 'Bout that," She breathed out not sure how he'd like this plan of hers, "Was thinkin' we head outta 'ere to go scope out the area for supplies and food, maybe a place ta stay, see if it's safe but come back 'ere; say thank you to the kind man and then we'll leave. What do ya think?"

Faelynn awoke to the bright sun leaking through the windows casting a bright gleam in the room that had once been dark with the exception of the small flickering glow the candle had provided. She sat up letting her eyes scan the room finding the space Fleet had once occupied empty; it hadnât been much of a surprise, of course heâd be up before her. After all, Fae had spent most of the night unable to sleep and when she was able to it had been very late; silently, she wondered how long she had been out. She took her time letting herself fully awake up before she pushed herself up and started her search of the house to find Fleet. She searched a few rooms before she finally found him and she stopped in the doorway silently watching him as her lips contorted into a smile as she took in his every movement, oblivious to her presence, and watched as he let his hands drift over the weapons ahead. It wasnât still she saw him grab them and shove them into his backpack that she stepped in and finally made her presence known. âFleetâ What are yer doinâ?â She questioned, but in a way that had told him she knew very well what he was up to and did not approve in the slightest.
âi never meant to leave it, but my wife wanted to.â he said clearing his throat while scratching his jaw, he didnât feel comfortable bringing up Harriet but there wasnât any other reason. They got married right after high school and all she wanted to do was leave, he didnât even know she had it in herselfâŠall that hatred for the town, he knew she wanted bigger things, that the suburbs werenât for her but she hated it. They stopped talking as soon as he moved back into new jersey. âYouâre right about that, many people took even their life for granted before the outbreak.â not me, he wanted to add. âNow they just take otherâs people lives for granted.â
The moment he said wife she wondered what had happened to her, was she dead? She must be if she wasnât with him but maybe she was just lost. In her previous life she mightâve asked but instead she just mumbled an âohâ and kept any questions she had to herself. It wasnât any of her business. âCanât say I blame 'em.â She muttered, her hands stilling as she stopped sharpening the knife, she didnât trust her hands to do what they were supposed to without shaking. Not when she realized she was one of those people; the people that took the lives of others for granted. The kind that would kill a living breathing person to protect herself. That was different, she had to tell herself; but was it? Sure her brother was an awful person but no one deserved to be killed. âSometimes thatâs what needs ta be done ta survive.â She found herself saying and was rather shocked to find that her voice was level, not revealing any of the pain and guilt she had felt. âSâall in the means of survival.â
