science has always been political. what gets studied. what doesnt. who gets to do the studying. on and on and on.
scientists on this post: yuuuup 👍
people who aren't scientists: um actually ☝️
This is both one of the issues that radicalized me into fully being a leftist and one of the reasons I've been so harsh on AI, around the time that first started coming to light is when I was heavily involved in studying AI and it has always irked me how we encode bigotry into tech
Please don't rely on blatant misinformation when making a good point!
Automatic sinks and dispensors do not have an algorithm. There is nothing being trained there, because there is nothing there to be trained.
They are just photoelectric sensors, specifically proximity sensing photoelectric sensors. There is a light being emittetd and a sensor right next to it to receive that light when it's being reflected by a nearby object in this case someone's hand. And obviously darker skin reflects way less light, so it fails to trigger the sensor, unless it is specifically calibrated.
The fact that this is the technology we use and that it often is not calibrated correctly is obviously caused by racism, or rather colorism. Allthough it is important to note that this specific no-touch sensor technology is also the cheapest out there, which is the actual reason it's the default, colorism just enables it to stay that way, rather than there being upgrades that work for everyone.
So please don't go around and claim that a technology that started to be used in some form in the 19th century is somehow being influenced by racist AI training that has been happening in the last few years. I know there is probably just some honest confusion about the technology going on here, but this kind of claim is the exact kinda misinformation that makes it easy to dismiss the entire and very important point that racism is present everywhere.
