Band keratopathy is caused by a calcium deposition in a band across the central cornea. This corneal degeneration can occur from a variety of causes, both systemic and local.

A traumatic cataract results when either a blunt or penetrating object damages the lens.

Unlike most sterile medical illustration, Netter aimed to include the human element in his pictures. His characters are real, they cry and they sweat and show emotion through the blood and disfigurement. Netter was as much about the psychology of the human condition as he was about accurate anatomy. 

Band Keratopathy

Band keratopathy can be caused by trauma such as surgery. Some eye drops can also cause band keratopathy, especially PV Carpine. It can also develop in patients with renal failure, sarcoidosis and vertain malignancies.

The following is a prosthetic cornea. It is implanted by keratoprosthesis, a surgical procedure where a diseased cornea is replaced with an artificial cornea.
