3D modeling can be scary when you enter it without any clue as to what or how to do it; trust me, we’ve all been there with a new medium, but in making this collection, I hope to help some newbies out! 

First of all; realize that you aren’t going to make the best model your first few renders! It’s okay, actually, it’s great if you mess up! The main thing you want to focus on is getting used to short cut keys and Blender, and truth be told, it’s completely okay to make a mess of a model your first few tries, no one is perfect their first try!

⇉   also keep in mind that you don’t need to draw if you can’t !!! there’s many references online, or you could scan in your sketches to the computer with phone applications / a scanner printer!

Red, yellow, and blue are the primary colors

If you’re using p i g m e n t.

Do you hear me? When you’re using traditional media, fucking actual goddamn paint, Bob Ross style, your primary colors are!

When you use paint, your primary colors are red yellow and blue and don’t forget it.

NOW THAT CHANGES COMPLETELY WHEN YOU GO FUCKING DIGITAL.

THE DIGITAL PRIMARY COLORS ARE RED BLUE AND GREEN IF AND ONLY IF YOUR WORK IS GOING TO STAY DIGITAL, ON THE SCREEN, AND NEVER LEAVE THE SCREEN, AND OF COURSE IF YOUR WORK IS GOING TO BE PRINTED. ON A PRINTER. WITH INK. THEN. AND O N L Y  T H E N.

ARE YOUR PRIMARY COLORS.

CYAN. 

MAGENTA.

AND YELLOW.

So say it with me folks!

Red yellow and blue, are the primary colors for traditional pigment that’s mostly used in paints and shit. You use red yellow and blue when you’re painting traditionally, Bob Ross style. 

Red blue and green is light, which is what you’re painting with when you pick up your tablet and go digital.

CMYK is ink, and ink only. You could use cyan, magenta, and yellow as your primary colors in paint if you wanted to be a complete dick, but they’re not your primary colors unless your work is going to be printed using. i n k. The only time they could be considered the primary colors in a traditional medium is if you’re using ink.

Is my icon. I painted this using RED. GREEN. AND BLUE. AS MY PRIMARY COLORS and they turned out fine. Of course, I used the finger smudge tool first and then the color mixing tool and then the blur tool, but hey what do I know.

Clearly using the blur tool only doesn’t cut it.

“Oh but Leo!” You say. “You used cyan and magenta in that color wheel!”

Well bitch guess what.

this is the digital color wheel. I’d say I mimicked that pretty well, don’t you think?

Oh and one other thing, notice how Blue and Yellow are directly opposite each other on this color wheel? That’s because we’re dealing with light, and with light, yellow and blue are complimentary colors.

Which is why when you mix them, it looks like this:

Which is a pretty neutral gray tone: They cancel each other out on the rgb color wheel when you mix them together.

BUT WITH PIGMENT THE PLACEMENT IS DIFFERENT

If you’ll notice, yellow and violet are now opposite each other, meaning they’re complimentary colors and if you mix  them, they’ll make a neutral gray.

But if you mix yellow and blue, same colors as before, YOU GET THIS:

Now keep in mind that the person in the video uses a darker blue, so they get a darker green, but the point is that it doesn’t make that neutral gray.

Now what happens when we mix yellow and violet paint?

Ah yes, you get a bunch of muted colors the more evenly you mix them.

What happens when you mix yellow light and purple light?

The reason the primary colors for light are so dramatically different from the primary colors for paint and ink is because your eye only receives combinations of red light, blue light, and green light. Our eyes do not have a sensor (cone cell) for yellow light. So when we paint with light, red green and blue are our primary colors. Because of our eyes.

Furthermore, paint primary colors are colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors together. For paint, they are red yellow and blue, because you cannot mix orange and green to get yellow. Mixing orange and purple paint does not make red. And mixing green and purple paint does not make blue.

Mixing blue and green paints will make cyan. Mixing red and blue paints will make magenta.

That’s why cyan and magenta aren’t primary paint colors.

However, you can’t mix yellow and blue ink and get cyan. You can’t mix red and blue ink to get magenta.

And that’s why cyan and magenta are the primary ink colors.

Brighter and stronger paints are created through tints and shades, through a thorough understanding of color theory and a few quality paint recipes. Not by bullshit posts on tumblr designed to mislead you.

IMPORTANT! Gravy Train Dog Food was had a recall.

A bunch of dogs, including my own, eat Gravy Train. It’s a very affordable wet canned dog food, so many people buy it. and my dog has to eat it because she’s lost most of her teeth and can’t chew.

Someone in the notes of the last Leyendecker post I reblogged mentioned having difficulty telling his work and Rockwell’s apart, and I know from experience that many people get them confused, which is somewhat astonishing as, to my eyes, their styles are very distinct. Leyendecker was Rockwell’s idol and mentor, but they were very different people and were interested in portraying different aspects of humanity, even when the basic subject matter was the same.

Surface-level, here are some differences:

Leyendecker smoothed out faults and imperfections (in the young. he stylized them in the old); Rockwell exaggerated them to mild or moderate caricature

Leyendecker approached his paintings as sculpture- even the merest clothing folds are carved out of the paint; Rockwell approached his paintings as drawings- the underlying contour always shines through.

Leyendecker used broad hatching brushstrokes and areas of smooth shine; Rockwell used more naturalistic texture and lighting

Leyendecker created idolized, larger-than-life figures that feel Hellenistic in their perfection; Rockwell created intimate scenes populated by figures that feel familiar in their specificity

Leyendecker’s best and most comfortable work was as a fashion/lifestyle illustrator; Rockwell’s best and most comfortable work was as an editorial/humor illustrator 

Leyendecker created beautiful still lives with his figures; Rockwell told compelling stories

Leyendecker often created erotic tension in his paintings; Rockwell almost never did.

See below: Two paintings of soldiers with women, but in Rockwell’s there is a clear punchline, and while the poses are contrived for the sake of composition, they’re not self-conscious. The women are pretty- as demanded by the central joke- but not truly sexualized anywhere but in the mind of the young soldier who is being overloaded with cake and attention. 

Contrast Leyendecker’s soldiers with a young nurse. Everyone in this image is posing attractively- no one has their mouth full or ears sticking out. Each crease and fold is sharp and sculptural, and the light picks out their best features- in particular the shoulders and posterior of the soldier facing away from the viewer. There is neither joke nor story, merely a group of beautiful young people, portrayed with deft brushwork and graceful lines. (and check out that hatching! That’s indicator #1 that you’ve got a Leyendecker image)

Leyendecker was very comfortable with “hot young things wearing clothes”, and did them very VERY well, but his facility with idealization came at the cost of personalization, which was fine for fashion illustration, but shows in his domestic scenes: 

Beautiful, but… cold. (Also, that hand on the left- who holds a baby with their hand like that??? Good lord, J.C.) Compare a Rockwell illustration (for a baby food brand, I believe) of a mother and baby: this is clearly a real and individual young mother and baby, interacting exactly how parents and babies really interact.

Even when they did basically the same content, and putting aside posing or composition or anything other than objective visual analysis, it’s still obvious who is who:

Red: NR’s smoother rendering vs JCL’s super cool hatching

Green: NR’s naturalistic cloth folds vs JCL’s sculptural stylization

Blue: NR’s natural lighting vs JCL’s world where everything is shiny

I’m STOKED about this. DO NOT GET ME WRONG. But I gotta say I’m again disappointed in the quality of Bloomsbury’s work here. They can’t hire a decent graphic designer? If the G is the “keystone” of your design, then it needs to be the center of your design. Aesthetics are important. Not to mention that whoever designed this particular font didn’t weight the inner dark lines uniformly (or something). Notice how the H and M look huge? And then there is the random tail on the K (which I can get over because I enjoy a fancy K).

I just feel like Maas makes them too much money for them to not put their best foot forward for her designs. And they’re too big to not hire the best of the best for their team.

@sparkleywonderful man i hope so. But even then, there should still be protocol in place to prevent poor workmanship. Honestly. It worries me that they would even HIRE someone who lacks an eye for design to do their designs. The centering could have been solved with BASIC photoshop skills (add rulers to the x and y axis of whatever you’re working on or add a grid to the page so you can always see where you’re at. AND MOST IMPORTANT: Walk away from what you’re doing and come back to it. You can lose perspective when you stare at soemthing upclose for too long. When you come back to it, make it full screen and then walk across the room to look at it. Anything off center becomes GLARINGLY obvious).

To me this speaks either to bad hiring practice or asking people who were hired for other positions to fill this position (Ex: asking young people to run your social media simply because they’re young). You can’t do that when you’re an industry leader. That’s bad internal management and relations. HONESTLY I shudder to think what their company culture is like if this got pushed out for a talent like SJM. Like I get she has NO rights to even have an opinion on the book covers, book titles and marketing. She sold the rights. She’s lucky if they even ask for her opinion (which I think they do to some extent because you don’t want to piss off your talent), but at the end of the day THEY are the industry gurus with the background and education to know the market and what’s gonna sell etc. not Maas.

But at this point….Maas might make better design decisions because this is just poor design. And the tangent line thing didn’t get fixed for ToD. It went to print with the font and elements poorly spaced/touching.
