Gilbert's Letter To Anne From His Voyage

Dear Anne,

It is is very nice to hear from you. I never expected to receive a letter from you (or anybody) especially here in Port of Spain, Trinidad. You did some excellent sleuthing, thanks for finding me. You'd make a good detective. I am enjoying the seafaring life very much. My shipmate Sebastian was born and raised here on the Island and has taken it upon himself to show me around. I have enjoyed meeting the locals and trying their foods. Other than that, I have just been working hard.

The news of the gold is very exciting, I can only imagine the commotion it must have caused. Currently, I have no plans to return to Avonlea, even if there's gold on my property. I figure it will still be there if and when I return. For now, my trip will continue indefinitely. I would like to see you again someday but I can't imagine it will be anytime soon. I hope you understand, as you know my father wanted me to see the world, so I am!

Please send my warmest regards to everyone in Avonlea.

For fans who may not have seen, it looks as though Netflix has decided not to renew Anne with an E for a 4th season. The above is the statement from Moira’s Instagram, sending her thanks to the fans.

Sadly, this likely ties into the way that Netflix does business and the way they define success.

Back in the older days of television, longevity of a show was an important goal. Because if a show reached 5 seasons, it could be purchased for ‘syndication’ (i.e., reruns) and would continue to generate money even after it’s ended. So the goal was to create multiple seasons whenever possible.

But with Netflix, they don’t care about longevity. Instead they care about variety. Because their goal isn’t to sell a show for syndication - instead, their aim is to get new people to sign up for their service. So they constantly supply a new set of shows as their ‘bait’ to get new people to sign up, and they prioritize that over continuing an existing show.

Sadly, that means that Netflix has a habit of cancelling beloved shows after 2 or 3 seasons. A lot of the reasons are discussed in this article.

What’s sad is Moira had mentioned at one point that she was aiming/planning for 5 seasons of the show. But I think she’s also clever enough to build Season 3 as a satisfying conclusion if it were to end here. Alas with any show that was crafted so beautifully we can’t help but want to see more of it. So the heartbreak among the fan-base is very understandable.
