ellie’s room smells like cheap whiskey and weed.
it’s not overwhelming. just there. soaked into the carpet, the blankets, the air that feels a little too warm.
you’re sitting cross-legged on the floor in a loose circle with jesse, dina, and ellie. the board game is spread out between you, pieces scattered in a way that says nobody really cares anymore.
everyone’s over it.
except jesse, because he’s winning.
“ugghh. okay. i’m bored,” dina sighs loudly, letting herself fall backward onto her hands.
“you just don’t wanna play anymore because i’m winning,” jesse says, pointing at the board like that proves something.
“sure. i’ll let you think that.”
“when i win, i expect a formal handshake.”
dina stares at him flatly.
ellie snorts beside you, shoulders shaking once. she rubs her palms together like she’s cold, even though she’s not.
“it’s just a board game,” you say.
“one he takes very seriously,” dina replies. “don’t start something you can’t finish.”
you laugh.
ellie looks at you immediately.
not at the board. not at jesse.
at you.
she watches the way your hair falls into your face when you tilt your head back. the way your eyes crease at the corners.
she looks away only when you stop laughing.
“we need to switch games anyway,” you add. “we can’t let this guy win.”
“finally. someone with sense,” dina says.
“you just want me to lose,” jesse replies.
“yes.”
“fair.”
there’s a beat of silence.
then dina straightens up, eyes lighting up with something dangerous.
“jesse. truth or dare.”
he grins immediately. “dare.”
“i dare you to stop being smug for five minutes.”
“that’s not a real dare.”
“it is emotionally.”
ellie laughs again, softer this time.
jesse shakes his head. “try again.”
“you know what? forget you.” dina turns smoothly. “ellie. truth or dare.”
everything in ellie’s posture tightens.
“uh,” she says, and that nervous smile appears. crooked. helpless.
“pick dare,” jesse whispers loudly, like he’s being subtle.
ellie rolls her eyes but listens anyway.
“…dare.”
“bold,” you say, glancing at her.
“yeah. regretting it already.”
dina doesn’t even pretend to think.
“i dare you two to kiss.”
it lands heavy.
like the air changed.
you blink once.
twice.
your brain feels slow, like it’s wading through something thick.
you look at ellie.
ellie stops moving entirely.
her ears go red first. then her cheeks.
she stares at the board like it personally betrayed her.
“you’re so annoying,” she mutters at dina, but her voice cracks just slightly.
“you picked dare,” jesse reminds her.
“you told me to pick dare.”
“and you listened.”
she glares at him. it’s weak. distracted. then she looks at you.
it’s quick. and then gone.
like looking too long would make it real.
your stomach flips.
“you don’t have to,” you say quietly.
the teasing tone in the room dies immediately.
ellie looks back at you. really looks at you. you aren’t laughing. you aren’t pushing. you’re giving her an out.
she swallows.
“…okay.” it’s barely above a whisper.
she shifts closer first. slow enough that you can see her deciding to do it.
her knee touches yours and she freezes for half a second, like she expects you to move.
you don’t, so she leans in.
her lips press against yours softly. unsure. like she’s concentrating on not messing it up.
her hand lands at your waist but barely, like she’s asking permission without saying it. and then she pulls back.
she clears her throat.
“okay,” she says. “that was.. normal.”
dina makes a noise that says absolutely not.
ellie refuses to look at her.
“okay guys,” dina announces brightly, standing up. “i think we’re gonna head out.”
jesse stretches. “yeah. before ellie explodes.”
ellie throws something at him. it misses.
and then the door closes.
and it’s just you two.
the silence after they leave is different.
heavier.
ellie stays on the floor for a second, staring at nothing.
“…you staying or going?” she asks eventually.
she says it like it doesn’t matter.
“i can stay,” you say. “if that’s cool.”
she nods too fast. “yeah. obviously.”
the air that was lively now carries an awkward undertone.
another silence.
she shifts back against her bed, and you follow without really thinking about it. your shoulders brush, but she doesn’t move away.
the tv turns on for some sort of distraction from the tension in the air.
“they’re gonna be so annoying about that,” she says.
“yeah.”
she glances at you sideways.
“you okay?”
“yeah.”
she studies you like she doesn’t fully believe that.
“…okay.”
another long pause.
“it was just a dare,” she says.
“was it?”
she blinks.
“technically.”
you don’t say anything.
“it wasn’t bad,” you say quietly.
she turns fully toward you now.
“i wasn’t bad, right?” her voice is small.
“no. you weren’t bad.”
she exhales slowly, shoulders dropping a little.
“…did you hate it?” she asks.
“no.”
a beat.
“did you?” you ask.
she looks at her hands. “…no. i didn’t.”
silence again.
then, like it physically hurts to hold it in anymore
“…i’ve kinda wanted to do that for a while.”
it comes out rushed.
she shuts her eyes for a second.
“that sounded weird. not like that.”
you don’t say anything.
she groans quietly.
“you’re pretty. okay? jesus.”.
it hangs there between you and you feel warm all the way down to your hands.
“don’t look at me like that,” she mutters.
“like what?”
“like i just confessed something dramatic.”
“you kinda did.” you reply
she leans back against the bed frame and stares at the ceiling.
“i hate you.”
“no you don’t.”
“…no.”
her hand shifts closer to yours.
stops, and then moves again.
“can i hold your hand?” she asks, barely looking at you. “or is that too middle school?”
you slide your fingers into hers. she inhales sharply “oh.”
her thumb traces a small line over your knuckles.
she looks at your joined hands like she didn’t expect it to feel like that.
“i’m not good at this,” she admits.
“at what?”
“the whole romance girlfriend thing.”
you squeeze her hand.
she looks at you, openly.
“…can i kiss you again?”
you nod.
she leans in slower than before. pauses inches away.
“still good?”
“still good.”
the second kiss lasts longer. it’s still soft and unsure. but she doesn’t pull away immediately. when she does, she rests her forehead against yours. you can feel her breathing.

i actually redid my blog a while ago, but i haven’t gotten around to posting anything new yet. i ended up taking down all of my old posts and fics because i wasn’t happy with my writing style at the time. it just didn’t feel like me anymore. back then, i was still pretty new to sharing my work instead of just keeping it in my notes app, so i wasn’t super familiar with tumblr either.
i’ll definitely keep writing for ellie williams, though. she’s my favorite to write for, and i feel like i understand her character really naturally.
