“I hate LA” You heard Schlatt grumble as he drove to Teds in the rented car. He wasn’t wrong. It was full of trash and trash wanna be influencers with a pretty background behind it.

“Oh you’re so grumpy” You chuckled, stretching slightly as you pull your legs up to your chest, glancing over at him as he drove down Ted’s street.

Once you pulled up to his apartment block you saw him stood outside, waving his hands. “My people!” You heard the shout from him, waving his hands in the air. You were staying at his for the week, sleeping in his spare room whilst Tucker and his wife stole Teds room. Leaving Ted in his own living room, though he set up an air mattress on the floor.

“Can you all stop getting engaged and married? I don’t have the space!” He smiled, watching you guys get out the car, walking over to help with the luggage.

“Oh shut up” You huffed as you pulled out the luggage, leading to Schlatt just taking it as giving the ones he didn’t have enough arms to carry, leaving you to the elevator and keys.

Schlatt and you got engaged a month before. Ted knew, that’s why he invited you to LA months prior for a “Guys and girls trip” as part of the chuckle week.

The week was going well, going around LA as the guys filmed, till you were sat in the kitchen eating breakfast with Schlatt and Tucker, Whilst his wife was at the grocery store, when Ted came in with a sigh. “Guys our fucking guest cancelled last fucking minute. We’re filming today! These LA fucks!” He groaned, leaning against the counter with his head in his hands.

“Let her step in. Fans would eat it up” Tucker mumbled as he pointed at you. I mean it is true, it would be fun and you could just hang out with Ted and Schlatt for an hour.

A few hours later you were settling into the plush couch, Schlatt and Ted either side of you. “We will introduce you and all. Just be yourself” Ted smiled, Schlatt’s hand on your lower back as you began.

The podcast went well, you had a laugh with your friends and managed to introduce yourself pretty well. “So if you were part of a sandwich what part would you be?” Ted asked, leaning in forwards slightly, his chin resting on his hand.

“Umm… I’d like to be the butter that’s like slightly too cold to go on the bread so it’s now clumping into the bread” you responded to a renowned paused, signifying the end to the podcast very awkwardly

You squinted up at him, your hair casually gathered in a loose bun with a few stray strands falling across your face, slightly obscuring your view. A gentle smile played on your lips as he drew nearer, and you asked softly, "What time is it?"

"Eight o'clock already. I'm up early today," he said with a soft chuckle, his fingers gently tucking your hair behind your ear. His hand lingered tenderly on your jaw, as if savoring the quiet intimacy of the moment.

"Oh gosh," you murmured, pressing your pointer finger and thumb firmly against the bridge of your nose as you shook your head in disbelief. His hand instinctively mirrored your movement, gently following the motion of your head.

You caught a soft murmur of "Oh toots" escaping his lips as his thumb tenderly traced along your jawline, while his other hand carefully swept your stack of documents and books to the side.

You let out a soft groan, gently tilting your head back so it rests comfortably in his hand. As you look up at him, your eyes reveal a profound weariness, reflecting the deep exhaustion that weighs heavily on you. “I’ll push through the day”

And push through you did, you collapsed onto the bed in Schlatts office at the end of the day. Exhaling deeper than ever as she fiddled on his computer. “You alright, Doll?” He asked, his eyes not drifting away from the computer.

“No” You huff, nuzzling deep into the pillow “I’m tired, and I’ve got a headache” you groan, whining slightly as you roll onto your back.

“Go to sleep. I’m streaming in 10 but I’ll be quiet.” He mumbled enough for you to hear it. You initially responded with a quick “no” before seeing him turn around and spot you completely nuzzled into the bed.

“Oh yeah you’re sleeping there. No questions” the cat had already curled at your feet, claiming their territory and you as part of it.

You gently drifted off as the stream began, his occasional glances back at you disguised as “checking on the cats”

“Bro is that an animal under the covers?” The Dono asked in reference to the curve of your body visible under the thin duvet with the bottom of it seen in his camera.

“No no it’s not. Good friend got sick so I’m keeping an eye on them” he smiled at the camera than back at you, nobody was buying the friend thing, at all. But nobody wanted to correct him.

At the end of the stream, you were awoken by a drop in weight beside you. Spotting Schlatt laid beside you, his hand behind his head.

"Yeah, yeah, they’re... absolutely lovely," he said, his voice trailing off as he leaned back against the kitchen counter. He pressed his lips together thoughtfully, gently biting his bottom lip in a moment of hesitation. You couldn’t help but chuckle softly, catching the subtle expression from the corner of your eye as you observed him quietly.

"What is it that you don't like about that? I think it's absolutely beautiful," you said with a gentle smile, your hair softly cascading over your shoulder as you turned around to face him completely. You then leaned back casually against the kitchen counter across from him.

“It’s just, ehhhh” He laughed awkwardly “Just very spooky, you know”

“It’s not like we have sharks,” you laughed, reaching forward to gently poke his side. Schlatt flinched with a dramatic little yelp, but the corner of his mouth twitched upward despite himself.

“Easy for you to say,” he muttered, rubbing the spot you’d poked like you’d actually wounded him. “You’re out there frolicking with eight-legged freaks of nature. I’ve seen the documentaries. One tentacle and you’re done for.”

You rolled your eyes fondly and hopped up to sit on the kitchen counter across from him, your legs swinging lightly. “Octopuses are actually really smart. And curious. They’re like the puppies of the sea, just… squishier. And with better problem-solving skills.”

Schlatt gave you a deadpan look. “Yeah, because nothing says ‘cute and cuddly’ like something that can unscrew a jar and shoot ink at your face.”

You couldn’t help but grin at how genuinely unsettled he looked. It was kind of adorable. This big, usually confident guy reduced to awkward lip-biting over sea life. You leaned forward a little, softening your voice.

“Hey… I know the ocean can be scary at first. When I did my first open-water dive, I was shaking so bad I almost couldn’t equalize. But once you’re down there… it’s quiet. Peaceful. Like the whole world slows down and it’s just you and whatever’s floating by. No notifications. No pressure. Just blue.”

He watched you quietly as you spoke, his usual sarcastic shield cracking just a bit. You reached out and took one of his hands, tracing your thumb over his knuckles.

“I’m not saying you have to throw on a wetsuit tomorrow,” you continued gently. “But… maybe we start small? We could go to the aquarium. Or even just watch some calmer videos together. I’ll hold your hand the whole time if you want.”

Schlatt exhaled through his nose, a soft, reluctant chuckle escaping. He squeezed your hand back, glancing down at where your fingers were linked.

“You’re really into this whole ‘convert the landlubber’ thing, huh?”

“Only because I want to share it with you,” you said honestly, your voice dropping a little. “There’s this one spot I love… calm water, tons of colorful fish, zero sharks in sight. I think you’d like it. And if you don’t… we turn around and get tacos instead. Deal?”

He was quiet for a long moment, chewing on his bottom lip again as he studied your face. Then, slowly, he nodded.

“…Yeah. Okay. Deal.” A small, crooked smile finally broke through. “But if an octopus looks at me funny, I’m blaming you.”

You laughed brightly and slid off the counter, stepping between his legs to wrap your arms around his neck. He automatically pulled you closer, resting his forehead against yours.

“Baby steps,” you whispered. “I’ve got you.”

Schlatt’s arms tightened around your waist, his voice low and warm against your hair.

“Yeah… I know you do,” he murmured, his voice warm against your hair as he held you there in the kitchen.

The next few days were filled with baby steps, just like you promised.

You started with the aquarium, where Schlatt spent half the time pretending he wasn’t impressed while his eyes stayed glued to the massive tank. By the time you reached the jellyfish exhibit, he was even cracking jokes again.

“These look like floating snot blobs with anxiety,” he said, arms crossed. But when one drifted close to the glass and pulsed softly, he tilted his head. “...Still kinda hypnotic though.”

You took a million photos of him pretending not to smile. He stole your phone and took several blurry ones of you instead, captioning them “my overly optimistic sea witch” before sending them to himself.

A few days later, you graduated to the local beach at sunset — no diving, just wading. You held his hand the entire time, walking along the shallows while gentle waves lapped at your ankles. At first he was tense, eyes darting toward the darker water farther out, but you distracted him with stories from your dives: the time a curious sea turtle swam right up to your mask, or the tiny clownfish that tried to claim your finger as home.

Eventually his shoulders loosened. He even let go of your hand long enough to splash you lightly, laughing when you retaliated with a much bigger wave.

“You’re evil,” he grumbled, wiping water from his face, but he was grinning.

Two weeks later, you were back at his place after another aquarium visit when you showed him the GoPro footage from one of your favorite shallow reef dives. The water was crystal clear, sunlight dancing across soft corals and schools of bright fish. No dramatic deep blue. No shadows that could hide anything scary. Just peaceful, vibrant life.

Schlatt watched the whole thing in silence, leaning against you on the couch with his arm around your shoulders. When the video ended, he didn’t speak right away.

Then, quietly: “...It doesn’t look like it’s trying to kill me in that one.”

You turned to look at him, surprised by the small admission. “It’s not. The ocean can be scary, but it can also be really gentle. Kind of like you when you’re pretending not to be a big softie.”

He snorted, but didn’t deny it. Instead, he pulled you closer and pressed a slow kiss to your temple.

“Alright, sea witch. One snorkel trip. That’s it. If I see anything with more than four legs, I’m out.”

Your heart did a little flip. “Deal. We’ll go somewhere super calm. I’ll be right there with you the whole time.”

The day of the snorkel trip arrived bright and clear. You picked a protected cove known for its calm waters and friendly fish. Schlatt was unusually quiet on the drive, fingers tapping restlessly on his thigh. When you parked, you reached over and laced your fingers with his.

“Hey. If it feels like too much, we leave. No pressure, okay?”

He looked at you for a long moment, then nodded. “Yeah. Okay.”

Getting him into the water took patience. He cursed under his breath the entire time he was putting on the fins, but once you were both floating face-down, you stayed close, your hand occasionally brushing his arm so he’d know you were there.

At first his breathing was sharp and fast through the snorkel. But slowly, as colorful fish swirled beneath you and sunlight filtered down in soft golden beams, his movements relaxed. You watched him lift his head once, spit out the snorkel, and just… stare.

“Holy shit,” he whispered. “It’s actually… really fucking pretty down there.”

You beamed, swimming closer until your masks were nearly touching. “Told you.”

He looked at you then — really looked — the ocean reflecting in his eyes. For once there was no sarcasm, no deflection. Just quiet wonder.

“You make everything less scary,” he said, voice muffled by the snorkel as he put it back in. Then he reached out and awkwardly bumped his gloved hand against yours underwater in what you were pretty sure was an attempt at holding hands.

You stayed out there for almost an hour. He even pointed excitedly at a little school of sergeant majors and later laughed (a bubbly, garbled sound) when a friendly wrasse came right up to investigate his mask.

That night, back at home with takeout on the couch and his head in your lap, he looked up at you.

“So… when’s the next one?”

You blinked, surprised. “You want to go again?”

He shrugged, cheeks slightly pink. “Yeah. Maybe. If you’re there.” A pause. “And maybe one day… the octopus thing. But I’m not making any promises about petting them. They can stay in their lane.”

You laughed softly and leaned down to kiss him, slow and sweet.

“Baby steps,” you whispered against his lips. “I’ve got you.”

Schlatt smiled. That real, unguarded one he saved just for you — and pulled you down for another kiss.

“Yeah… I know you do.”

You flew into Haneda airport in an early April morning, catching the end of the cherry blossom season out the window of your plane. You left your bags in the hotel and exploded Tokyo, probably spending more money then you would dream of in a single day cause “Yen is confusing”.

You ended your evening, a new handbag over your shoulder as you stood at a bar in the Shinjuku golden gai area in the city, staring at the poorly translated bar menu.

“You alright there?” You heard an American accent behind you, surprisingly uncommon in Tokyo. You turned to see a tall, white, and good looking man. Really uncommon in Japan. He was smiling at you with his arms crossed as he leaned against the bar.

“Oh shit sorry. Yeah I’m just thinking of what to drink” You giggled awkwardly, shrugging your shoulders as you eyes drifting between the bar menu and the man beside you.

“You like beer?” You shook your head in response.

“Give me a second” he smiled at you, leaning against the bar making eye contact with the barman, signaling him to come over.

“Kon'nichiwa. Ehhh” he started to broken Japanese “Ni… Ni Remonsawā Onegaishimasu” he stuttered, trying to display a more confident face in front of you.

“I speak English sir. Two lemon sours coming up ” the Japanese man responded, turning around to mix the drinks, which was instituting a giggle from you.

"Alright then," he murmured softly, elongating the final syllable as he cast a quick, warm glance in your direction, a gentle smile spreading across his face.

You settled down and engaged in a warm conversation with him for what felt like you’d known him for years when really it had only been mere hours, discussing your various travels, the vibrant city of Tokyo, and the details of your job. You looked at him with curiosity and said, "So, you're here twice a year? Wow, you must be making quite a bit of money."

“YouTube, doll” He smiled, sipping on his lemon sour “One of my best friends from YouTube is coming tomorrow. Last night of freedom” He joked, gently nudging you.

“You’d like him. Tall guy, kinda Boston accent” He had a warm smile on his face talking about his friend, you could tell they’ve been friends for years it seemed.

With a soft and hopeful tone, you carefully inserted your request, "If you could share your number with me, perhaps I might have the chance to meet him." As you spoke, you looked up at him with a gentle expression, conveying both sincerity and anticipation.

You laid on the couch, the lack of available pillow in this household strained your neck as you rested against it, your legs resting on the back of the couch.

The rest of the lunch club guys were gathered throughout the couch, your boyfriend’s Schlatts head beside yours, his neck equally as strained.

“Cooper! What’s going on with that girl you were talking to? The one with the curls” He said across the couch to cooper who was slummed into the couch with Travis beside him

“She’s just not into me dude. I tried to take her out.. nothing” He sighed, slumming deeper in the couch. “I don’t why you chase these girls man” Schlatt retaliated, sitting back up using your chest as a support form.

“Dude you’re in a relationship” Travis cackled, gaining the attention of the crowd surrounding them. “It’s easy for you to say dont chase”

Schlatt scoffed, still using your chest as a makeshift pillow like it was the most natural thing in the world. “Being in a relationship doesn’t mean I chase, bro. That’s the whole point. I don’t have to chase anymore. She’s already here.”

You tilted your head down to look at him, one eyebrow raised. He was really doubling down.

Cooper let out a loud, dramatic groan from the other end of the couch. “Here we go again. Every time one of us strikes out, you pull the ‘I already won the game’ card like you didn’t used to call us pathetic for even trying.”

“I’m just saying,” Schlatt continued, gesturing lazily with the hand that wasn’t resting on you, “you’re out here simping, taking girls out, buying flowers and shit. Meanwhile I’m chilling. Low effort, high reward.”

Ted barked out a laugh from the kitchen. “Low effort? Bro, you folded her laundry yesterday because she ‘had a long day.’ You literally sent us a picture of the fitted sheet like it was a trophy.”

Schlatt sat up a little, moving to use your stomach as leverage. “That was one time. And it was efficient. Two birds, one stone.”

You couldn’t hold back anymore. “Baby, you also rewatched that reality dating show with me twice this week and got mad at the guys on it for not communicating their feelings.”

The room exploded.

“Twice?!” Cooper wheezed, slapping Travis’s shoulder. “Schlatt ‘I’d rather die than watch that girly shit’ He watched a dating show? Voluntarily?”

Schlatt’s neck flushed. “It was background noise. She had it on.”

“Background noise my ass,” Charlie chimed in from the armchair. “You were yelling at the TV last week telling some dude to ‘step up and be a man.’ We have receipts.”

Schlatt dropped his head back against you with a defeated groan, but his arm still slid around your waist, pulling you closer out of habit. “Y’all are exaggerating. I’m the same dude I’ve always been.”

“Yeah?” Travis leaned forward, grinning like a shark. “Then why’d you bail on the last three guys’ nights to go to some pottery painting thing with her? You painted a fucking mug, man. It says ‘World’s Okayest Boyfriend’ on it. We saw the Instagram story before you deleted it.”

You smirked, running your fingers through Schlatt’s hair. “He was actually really proud of that mug. It’s on our kitchen shelf.”

Schlatt muttered into your shirt, “Traitor,” but you feel him smiling against you.

Cooper raised his beer in mock salute. “Face it, bro. You went from ‘never gonna be a wife guy’ to full simp in record time. Own it.”

Schlatt finally sat up properly, but instead of pulling away, he just tugged you with him so you were half in his lap. He looked around at his friends, trying to keep a straight face.

“Alright, fine. I’m in a relationship. Happy?” He glanced down at you, his expression softening just a little. “But I’m still not chasing. That’s for losers like you.”

You rolled your eyes and flicked his forehead. “Keep telling yourself that, hypocrite.”

The guys howled with laughter as Schlatt buried his face in your neck, groaning but refusing to let you go.

The guys were still howling when the doorbell rang. Then rang again. And again. Within twenty minutes, the casual couch hangout had turned into a full-blown house party. Someone had hooked their phone to the speakers, bass thumping through the living room. Beer pong tables were set up in the dining area, red cups already scattered like casualties. More people from the group chat had shown up, and the energy was chaotic in the best way.

You were still half-draped across Schlatt on the couch, now with a drink in hand, when Travis clapped loudly. “Alright, since Schlatt wants to act like he’s above chasing, let’s play a game. Truth or Dare.”

Schlatt groaned, his arm tightening around your waist like he could physically hold onto his remaining dignity. “Pass. I’m good.”

“Too late,” Cooper grinned, already refilling drinks. “You’re the guest of dishonor tonight.”

The circle formed fast. Half on the couch, half on the floor, music pulsing in the background. Someone dimmed the lights. You leaned into Marc’s side, smirking as he tried to look unbothered.

First few rounds were tame. Then Travis pointed straight at Schlatt. “Truth. How many times have you actually bailed on us to ‘help y/n with something’ in the last month?”

Schlatt took a long swig of his drink. “Like… three.”

“Bullshit,” you laughed, loud enough for the circle to hear. “It was six. Minimum.”

The room erupted. Ted nearly spit out his drink. “Six?! Bro, you used to call me a simp for canceling once!”

Marc shot you a playful glare, but his ears were red again. “You’re supposed to be on my side.”

“I am,” you said sweetly, patting his chest. “The side of honesty.”

Cooper leaned forward, eyes gleaming. “Okay, my turn. Schlatt… when’s the last time you did something undeniably wife-guy?”

Marc tried to play it cool. “Never. I don’t do simp shit.”

You raised your hand like you were in class. “Last Sunday he woke up early, went to that bakery across town, and brought me back fresh cinnamon rolls and flowers because I mentioned them once in passing. Then he pretended it was ‘on his way’ from the gym.”

The circle lost it. Phones came out again. Someone started chanting “Wife guy! Wife guy!” while School buried his face in your shoulder, laughing despite himself.

“Alright, alright,” he finally admitted, pulling back just enough to look at the group. “Y’all already know I’m cooked. I made fun of every single one of you for this exact shit. And now I’m the one color-coordinating throw pillows and watching shitty reality dating shows.” He glanced down at you, his expression softening in that way that still made your stomach flip. “But she’s worth it. Even if it means you idiots get to clown me forever.”

Travis raised his cup. “To the fallen legend.”
