The other day I watched a little boy get knocked to the ground by an older kid who was running by. He burst into tears as his mother hurried over.
âHereâs a bandaid for ya,â I said, producing one from my vest pocket.
âOh, heâs not bleeding, thank you though!â
I lowered my voice and leaned in. âKids think bandaids are health magic,â I said. âAsk him where it hurts and exploit that placebo effect.â
She did just that, and instantly the kid stopped crying and thanked her. âIâll have to remember that,â she said.
Children: #HACKED
Also if you have a crying kid give them a cup of water. You canât cry and drink at the same time and it gives them a chance to calm down.
Tell them their going to run out of tears so they drink the water.
My mom does this at her preschool after awhile the other children start offering the crying child little cups of water.
Stuff like this is also a great test to see if the kid is actually seriously injured! Because with how much some kids cry over tiny bumps and scrapes, it can be hard to tell. But if you slap a Band-Aid on it or give them a cup of water or a piece of candy and they stop crying, theyâre fine. If they keep crying despite whatever little placebo or distraction youâve given them, you might wanna look a little closer at that injury or seek medical attention.
With my twoâs class we ask them âmore hurt or more scary?â It takes a bit of practice but after a few times they can answer without more prompting. More scary gets a hug and more hurt gets a look over.
That last one is so important because it validates the childâs feelings and tells them itâs okay to have these feelings and lets them learn how to deal with them, rather than just distracting them from them. I also helps teach the child to both communicate their feelings more readily and communicate when theyâre hurt more clearly. All really important skills for a child to develop young.
Shoutout to Rugrats for not only having Christmas episodes, but also Kwanzaa, Chanukah, and Passover episodes
The nuclear family is probably the greatest enabler of child abuse, ever.
Putting two people in complete control of another person (who is particularly vulnerable and has few legal rights) and then having no oversight for the whole arrangement is the absolute worst idea.
Families are garbage.
Hahaha wtf
I wouldnât even know where to start with this. omg.
OP, what would you propose as an alternative to families?
communal child raising
less isolated familial structures in general
children being made aware of how they should and shouldnât be treated
Some form of child protection services that donât just believe the parents and assume a child is lying when they report abuse
more legal and counselling services made available to children
I donât get people that are like âlol, what? thatâs so weird, lets laugh at the very notion that traditional families are abusiveâ.
communal child raising is the traditional family. 70-100 years ago 4 generations lived together in the same house, having 4 grandparents, 6 aunts and 15 cousins around every day was normal.
Things that should be mentioned:
- These communities are not necessarily connected by an biological ties. In a lot of these multigenerational âfamiliesâ, including people in the family who are not relatives or married into the family is totally normal. This has always created a lot more space to support people without families, support people who do now want to partner up and to create communities in which couples who can not have children (like some queer couples but not all & other couples too) can be a part of child raising.Â
- Having a lot more young people around often means young people learn from each other. In many cultures young people form a non-hierarchial group that learns together and can do a great deal without adult supervision.Â
The nuclear family doesnât just facilitate abuse, it facilitates hierarchy. Itâs a training school for obedience to authority.Â
Now, which system would push such a training school strongly so it could get docile obedient citizens? Which system whould push the nuclear family.Â
Iâm not saying itâs capitalism but itâs capitalism.Â
And then thereâs the fact that the 2 parent, nuclear family can be most easily pushed into the pattern where one adult works an extremely exhausting job many hours a day that leaves that adult hardly capable of doing anything else, while the other adult takes on all the other things that adult would otherwise have done: care for children, clean the living space, prepare food, prepare clean clothing, etc. for free. What we know as traditional gender roles.Â
This way capitalism gets one intensely loyal worker who feels âresponsibleâ for âsupporting a familyâ while all the work to keep that worker going is done for free by an unpaid worker in the home.Â
And, you know, communities need a lot less stuff. A community of 50 can do just fine with one or two hammers. 25 nuclear families need 25 hammers. The nuclear family demands a huge amount of commodity purchasing.Â
(hooboy that last point)
Damn. What a breakdownâŚ
Communal living is fantastic for the disabled and elderly folks, as well.

incredible how "the hungry deserve food" and âthe sick deserve medicineâ are radical communist beliefs in 2017

not to be positive on main but sometimes things really are ok. sometimes you really will be happy and safe and warm. sometimes you really will be giggly and blushy and full of love. sometimes the night is chilly and your home is cozy and your tea is perfectly steeped and your phone lights up with a message from someone you love. sometimes life really is quite lovely.
b just wear the seatbelt
Mmmmmmm
I gotta naysay here. Seatbelts do a LOT of harm. Not everyone can wear one  and not everyone wants to risk it. Just among my own friends and people I know in general; 4 females had a breast cut completely or partially off due to a seat belt. 6 people had their throats cut, to an obviously non-lethal degree. 2 had their stomachâs cut open to a horrifying degree that I wonât elaborate on.
Not even counting the uncomfortably awkward belt locations for particularly large, small, fat, skinny people. Females with large breasts get the joy of holding the belt in place or adjusting it every couple seconds.
Theyâre awkward, uncomfortable, painful, and can often cause the injuries in an accident. Sometimes itâs just better to forgo the belt.
Those injuries caused by seat belts more than very likely would have been deadly had they not been wearing them. To have enough force to cut skin or cut off a breast in an accident is far more than enough to cause someone to go flying through the windshield of a car, to slam them into the steering column, or through a window resulting in deadly injuries or causing an even bigger accident for other drivers now that your body is in the road along with your crashed car. Are you really going to risk being a smear of ground meat on the pavement because your seat belt was a little uncomfortable or it might cut you? Then I got good news for you, thereâs a wide variety of devices made specifically to make seat belts more comfortable and reduce that risk.
These make it so that your seat belt wonât cut your neck, a simple sleeve of padded fabric that velcros around it, meaning you can put it anywhere on the belt.Â
This one does something similar, by readjusting the positioning of the seat belt to move it farther away from your neck and hey, helps a bit with having boobs in the way.
They even make ones for children too.
Boobs still in the way? While itâs pretty silly looking, this helps keep the seat belt in place so you donât have to keep adjusting it.
And if youâre overweight, they make seat belt extenders so you can still be safe.Â
But maybe youâre still unsure, then listen to the CDC and all of their sources.Â
âMore than half of the people killed in car crashes were not restrained at the time of the crash.1 Wearing a seat belt is the most effective way to prevent death and serious injury in a crash.Seat belt use is on the rise. Laws, education, and technology have increased seat belt use from 11% in 19812 to nearly 85% in 20103, saving hundreds of thousands of lives. â
âMost drivers and passengers killed in crashes are unrestrained. 53% of drivers and passengers killed in car crashes in 2009 were not wearing restraints.1Seat belts dramatically reduce risk of death and serious injury. Among drivers and front-seat passengers, seat belts reduce the risk of death by 45%, and cut the risk of serious injury by 50%.4Seat belts prevent drivers and passengers from being ejected during a crash. People not wearing a seat belt are 30 times more likely to be ejected from a vehicle during a crash. More than 3 out of 4 people who are ejected during a fatal crash die from their injuries.5Seat belts save thousands of lives each year, and increasing use would save thousands more. Seat belts saved almost 13,000 lives in 2009. If all drivers and passengers had worn seat belts that year, almost 4,000 more people would be alive todayâ
Or this one
â The number of those who escaped injury [by wearing a seat belt] increased by 40% and those with mild and moderate injuries decreased by 35% after seatbelt legislation. There was a significant reduction in soft tissue injuries to the head. Only whiplash injuries to the neck showed a significant increase.â
Or this
â Fifty-five percent of those killed in passenger vehicle occupant crashes in 2008 were not wearing a seat beltâŚâ
âWearing a seat belt reduces the risk of fatal injury by almost 50%. For children, the risk of fatal injury is reduced by 71% with the use of child safety seats.â
âOf those thrown completely out of a vehicle in a car crash, 75% died. Only one percent of people totally ejected from their cars had on a seat belt during the crash. Over 30% were not wearing seat belts.â
Conclusion? Wear your fucking seat belt. Tell your kids to wear their fucking seat belt. Tell your friends and family to wear their fucking seat belts. Time and time again itâs been proven that you are significantly more likely to survive a crash if youâre wearing one. Most people think theyâre uncomfortable, but when youâre in a crash it can save your life. Iâd rather be mildly injured than dead.
Wear your seat belt.
2017 and people are still trying to spread the myth that you donât need to wear a seatbelt.
People really donât wear a seatbelt????
This reminds me of a story from WW1Â
When they first introduced Helmets to the troops fighting in trenches the number of head injuries suddenly skyrocketed and people wanted to take the helmets away again.
Until they realized that the reason for this was the fact that most of these head injuries would have been fatal if it wasnât for the Helmets.
You always need to look at the bigger picture. Â
Lmfao ya rather save ya tiddies than go flying through the fucking windshield some of you guys are crazy
