The Holiday Special
I'm thinking as if my life was like a 90s dramedy series, where there's this holiday episode in which the main character (that's me) goes 30 years into the future somehow while being simultaneously dissatisfied with his life as a college student, Dickens-Christmas-Carol-style.
Nick is shopping for Christmas presents at a large consumer electronics outlet a few days before Christmas. He gets into his car and a sad song from his middle-school life comes on the radio. This makes him contemplate his life, as he looks at his life choices. Unfortunately for Nick, his car passes through a quantum singularity at this exact moment, and all of the circuits in his car act as a bubble that carries the car through space-time 30 years into the future.
Nick arrives in the future and sees his future self successful and busy all the time, yet ultimately depressed consistently because of his loneliness and use of addictive anti-depressants that don't help, but don't hurt. Nick Prime has to cheer up his future self with the impending holiday approaching, and find a way back to his own time so he gets home in time for Christmas.
Future Nick customarily spends the holidays alone, but Nick Prime urges him to go out and reconnect with his past that he has repressed. Nick attempts to get into contact with Future Nick's relatives. They are receptive to Future Nick coming over for the holidays, as they had urged him in the past, but Future Nick lashes-out at them and the two must promptly leave, because Future Nick overreacts.
Nick finds some of Future Nick's high school friends, and they give him the opportunity to celebrate with them. The fundamental reasons that Future Nick and his high school friends stopped communicating becomes apparent in the form of recreational substance use, and both Nicks decide to leave, because they don't fit and cannot partake because of the aforementioned anti-depressants.
The last person Nick gets a hold of is Future Nick's "most suitable" ex-girlfriend. She is the most hesitant to allow the Nicks to come over for holiday cheer, but she agrees, knowing full well that two Nicks aren't better than one. She still has feelings for Future Nick despite the past that he has repressed, and wishes he would just feel better. Unfortunately, she left out the fact that she is divorced and has a son when on the phone with Nick Prime (so as not to influence the space-time continuum when Nick Prime is from). They arrive to her home and her son introduces himself. Since this all seems unbeknownst to Future Nick until this point, he drives off, leaving Nick Prime stranded at his girlfriend's house, 30 years in the future.
The future girlfriend and present-Nick reconnect, and while not revealing many details, she talks about how they were engaged at one point, but something tragic happened to make Future Nick get cold feet and call off the wedding. This doesn't surprise Nick Prime, and he sees that his life is just as bad in the future, but something tells him that everything is not as it seems.
The only way that Nick Prime can get home is through the use of the Volvo he was driving in the first place when he ended up in the future. The car is not functional at this point, because once it made the jump through space-time, the alternator exploded and now the battery is dead. Since it's Christmas Eve, Nick can't get the new parts, and has no way of knowing if the car will be able to travel back.
In hopes of resolving the situation between Future Nick and his former fiancee, Nick must track down his future self and calm him down. It's so bizarre for Nick to try to get himself at age 49 to cope with his own depression, because he can't even handle his own. He finds Future Nick back at his apartment chugging Diet Mountain Dew like nobody's business. It turns out that Future Nick is his ex-girlfriend's son's father, and that Future Nick and his ex-girlfriend were actually married at one point.
This surprises Nick Prime, and changes everything in the story. Nick realizes that his future-ex lied to him so he wouldn't question Future Nick running off again. She still has feelings for Nick in the future (or in any time for that matter [which is weird]).
Nick tries to get Future Nick back together with his ex-wife so their son can have a happy childhood that Nick knows full well Future Nick didn't get. Future Nick is hesitant, and while the two Nicks are arguing, the man on the TV in the room nonchalantly mentions that that the quantum singularity that passed though the past that blew up Nick's alternator and landed him in the future is going to pass by again very soon. Nick and Future Nick both know that Nick values his life very much, and they must attempt to send him back to right all the wrongs that happened between when he left and 30 years later.
Nick and Future Nick quickly get over to his ex-wife/girlfriend's house and they make-up dramatically in front of Nick and their son. Both Nick's have a moment and see the error of their ways, just in time for Nick's future friends and brother to arrive to fix the car and send Nick back to the past. Before Nick is sent back in his Volvo, he sees that so many people still care about him in the future, and that they always have. Nick smiles and waves at himself, with his restored family and friends as he flashes back to his own time, traveling down the road on his way back from the store.
