Second Chance - Chapter One
Message from Angela.
Hey everyone! I'm back with a spin-off from my story, Hidden. I hope you enjoyed Hidden and will enjoy Second Chance. I know some part of Chen and Minah's story was mentioned in Hidden, but you do not need to read Hidden to be able to read or catch up with Second Chance. It is its own story. But, if you want to, you can read Hidden first, seeing the events that happened, Hidden was first with Suho's story, then came Chen's.
I hope I'm not confusing any of you, lol. Please enjoy Second Chance, and don't be scared to leave comments, concerns, questions, and please upvote.
P.S. I will be monitoring the comments on every chapter, so if you guys are confused or lost, just drop a question, and at the end of a new chapter, I will answer every single question to the best of my ability to make things clearer for you guys. So, ask away!
XOXO
MINAH
I closed my umbrella, the water droplets hitting my leg. The bells jingle as I open the door, some heads turning my way, but only one face catching my eye.
I take a deep breath, walking towards an old acquaintance, someone who I thought I wouldn't be needing help from.
After all, ex-boyfriends were supposed to be enemies, right?
Long story, short. He left me. I was heartbroken. I got over it.
Maybe.
That was the past though. I needed to get over it. There was no other choice.
Kim Jongdae, also known as Chen, from the idol group Exo, was this ex-boyfriend of mine. But, due to their leader's personal affairs, Exo disbanded. Sad, but true. Chen, however, stayed in the business. He was an amazing singer after all.
I made my way at the back of the cafe, a coffee waiting for me, as I sat across Chen.
"Hey." I offered a smile.
He returned the gesture, taking off his designer sunglasses that hid his playful eyes.
"Hey."
"How's it going?" I tried to get a conversation going.
Awkward.
If I had to describe this one meeting, awkward would be the word for it.
"It's okay." he smiled softly, probably feeling as awkward as me.
"My ballad single wasn't really a success, so I'm on break now." he confessed, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I wouldn't say it wasn't a success." I tried defending him, for an unknown reason. "I liked it, actually."
"Thanks." I saw him cheer up, a little. "Anyway, I just want to know if everything's okay with you. I don't think you would have called if it wasn't important."
Here we go. I took another deep breath, trying to get the courage to get to the point.
"Will you marry me?"
"What?" I heard confusion in his voice, his eyebrows furrowing as if trying to understand my words. He set down the white cup of cappuccino that he ordered, then looked at me straight in the eye.
Oh, God. This was be harder than I thought. Asking Kim Jongdae to marry me has got to be in the top five of the hardest things I ever had to do in life.
I tried looking around the cafe, trying to ease my mind into the thought of rejection. The rain kept pouring outside. People everywhere were talking to one another. Some on their laptops, phones. But me, I was with my ex-boyfriend from almost six years ago, asking him to marry me.
"Did you just ask me to marry you?" he asked one more time, trying to set things straight.
I nod slowly, unsure of how to explain things to him.
This has only been our fourth meeting, since he left for China to be in the idol group, Exo. The first was very shocking, when I was called suddenly to help with my godchild. Second, was plotting with some old friends to right some mistakes. Then, the third was at the restaurant when my bestfriend got engaged to one of his members. This fourth one would be the first time we spoke face to face with each other.
You can say we haven't really talked about our issues. There's still many things that needed to said and done. Especially get some kind of closure.
But I was desperate, and I didn't have much time. I needed him, and I hoped he would help me.
"Listen, Chen. I know we've had our differences in the past, and we may not have been over all of that. In fact, this may be the most bizarre thing that will ever come out of my mouth, but I have to do this for grandma. Will you please be my fake husband?" I try to explain, knowing that he may still be confused. "You see, she's been very sick lately and the doctors said her time is limited. I just want to fulfill her last wish. She's been nagging for a long time now when her only grandchild will get married. She's even made it her last dying wish to see me walk down the aisle." I chuckle softly, to try and hide the pain of reality.
Jongdae seems to get what I'm trying to say, but he's still contemplating about the idea. "Minah. This is really stupid. You can't ask me to marry you just because gran-"
Stupid? I knew he wouldn't agree to any of this craziness.
I get up from my seat, setting my hands on the round table, interrupting his thought.. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked you. It was a mistake for even thinking about this stupid idea." I say, looking apologetically towards him. "I.. I just thought.. Actually, no I didn't think. Because if I did, I wouldn't be here. I just don't know what to do.. But please, just forget this even happened." I sigh, picking up my purse from my seat, so I can save myself some dignity before I lost them all.
"Minah, wait." he says, following my actions. By now, we have gathered the cafe's attention, and slowly seated ourselves at the corner table that we chose. It was best that no one noticed the famous boy group member.
He pauses after sitting down, thinking deeply about something. Knowing him, he probably won't want to marry me anyway. After he left for China without saying goodbye, he only said that he would be back. But, he never did come back. Not after a week. A month. A year. Six years. Nothing. Not a phone call, nor a letter, simply nothing.
But I got through it. After the first few months, I got the message. I stopped hoping he would come back. I knew he wasn't coming back to fix my broken heart.
It was only now that we got to see each other again. After Hyunji and Joonmyun got back together, there was no other way of trying to avoid him after all those years that he left. And know, I needed him. He was the only way.
"I know, Jongdae. It's a horrible idea." I sigh in defeat, knowing what he's about to say.
At times like these, he was always very serious and logical. Despite his joking ways, he had a serious side to him when it really mattered. Maybe that was one of the many reasons I fell for him, before he broke my heart.
He stayed silent for a moment, gathering his thoughts before speaking again. "I'm not saying it's a bad idea." he says gently with his gaze softened. "It's just, this is all too much to handle. Plus, grandma probably hates me for what I did... Even I hate me for what I did."
You're wrong. I wanted to say. Grandma doesn't hate you. In fact, it's the opposite. She totally adores you and still thinks of you as one of her grandchildren.
"She doesn't know." I say without much emotion. "The past is the past, and now, I just want her to be happy."
I could see the sadness in his eyes upon hearing my cold response. "You.. you never told grandma that I left?"
"No, it's not that. She knows you went to China, and that you're successful now. She just thinks that after you left, we broke up on good terms, and are still friends. I know she would have wanted it to be that way, seeing that grandma loves you and thinks of you as her own grandchild."
"But this supposed marriage? How is it going to help her? How is it going to help you?" he asks with concern.
I blink up at him, my facade still on. "It's not." I say coldly. "But, if it's her last wish to see me get married, then be it. I'll get married just for her." I pause, trying to not be affected by his words, even if it was hard. "As for me, I don't need any help. I just want to make grandma happy."
"Minah, I don't think you see the point here. She doesn't want you getting married, just to get married." he starts, his voice starting to get uneven. Just by the sound, I already know that he's frustrated or not getting his point across.
"Grandma wants you to get married, so you're happy with the one that you love. The one that you'll spend the rest of your life with. She just wants you to be with someone who will treat you right, love you everyday, and someone that will be there to protect you." he finished, regret filling his angelic voice.
But I couldn't be swayed. No, I shouldn't. At the bottom of my heart I knew he was right. Even before this, I knew I was wrong.
"I just want her to be happy." I say, my voice already losing its control. "I want her to be able to leave happily and not worry about me.." I continue, as a tear escapes its wall. The wall that I tried building up from the moment I thought of the idea of marrying him. But, with just a few minutes together with him, he manages to break down those walls.
"Minah.." he whispers, taking hold of my hand, rubbing my knuckles with his thumb softly.
"It's fine. This was a really stupid idea." I pull my hand, wiping the stray tear. "I get it." I say with more control this time, my wall back on again.
"Minah." he says sternly this time to get my attention. "It's not the best idea, but I see that you just want your grandma to be happy. I get it, I know. I just don't know if I'm the right guy.." he tries to explain more softly.
No, no, no. It had to be him. Knowing grandma, she'll probably know my plan the second my fake fiance enters the room to meet her. Plus, there was Hyunji, my best friend. She would know something was up, and seeing that she was close with grandma, she'd hate the idea of me deceiving her.
"I understand. But please, Jongdae.. You know my grandma. It won't work with anyone else." I say, almost pleading. "I know it's a really hard favor, but please, I'll take care of everything. We won't get married for real, that's a given. And all you have to do is meet grandma a few times to sell the idea, and boom! Wedding time." I stop, my emotions catching up to me. "She gets her last wish..." I say in a whisper as if it were that easy, even though I know it'll be hardest thing that I'll ever have to do. But, for grandma, I'm willing to do anything.
Even put the past behind me.
