sometimes  shinjiro  is  tempted  to  forget  just  why  makoto  was  made  leader.  moments  like  this  serve  as  a  hell  of  a  reminder.  for  a  quiet  as  he  can  be,  the  kid  has  no  problem  handing  out  stern  orders  -  even  if  those  stern  orders  come  mostly  in  the  form  of  a  hard  look.  shinji  gets  the  message.

but  the  thing  is,  he  kind  of  has  a  vested  interest  in  not  looking  weak  in  front  of  the  team.  he  doesn't  want  to  give  anyone  any  reasons  to  be  suspicious  of  his  physical  health,  lest  they  keep  him  sidelined  -  or  worse,  learn  just  how  bad  things  really  are.  how  bad  they'll  get. 

so  protest  after  protest  hangs  in  his  throat,  even  still.

makoto's  hand  stops  mid-swipe  as  the  question  is  posed,  leaving  a  distinct  line  between  the  dusty  surface  of  the  table  and  the  wood  of  it's  top.

there  was  nothing  to  wonder  about.  he  was  where  he  was  and  that  was  that,  no  amount  of  rest  could  fix  him.  and  yet  here  he  was,  practically  forcing  his  own  senpai  to  care  about  himself.  to  make  sure  he  rested  and  felt  better,  so  he  could  keep  going.  it  felt  strange,  being  a  bit  of  a  hypocrite.

there's  a  long  silence  between  the  pair.  drawn  out  as  the  dust  that's  fluttered  into  the  air  begins  to  settle  once  again.  makoto's  hand  does  not  move.  it  almost  looks  as  if  he's  not  breathing  in  some  ways.  the  stillness  is  unsettling.  after  an  uncomfortable  pause,  makoto  resumes  dusting  with  his  hands,  albeit  much  slower  this  time.  his  expression  is  almost  stone-faced,  unreadable.         ❝   we'll  see.   ❞        the  words  are  flat,  emotionless.  as  if  they  are  simply  meaningless  sounds  in  an  empty  void.         ❝   you  first,  though.   ❞

@everyotherdream &&. said... when shadow milk cookie decides that all the others no longer bring him any kind of entertainment, perhaps he finds himself attempting to sleep to pass the time in the hopes that something will happen. but does shadow milk cookie dream ? does he experience the concept of nightmares or dreams ? maybe no one will ever know the truth, but one thing is for certain... upon this attempt at sleep, shadow milk cookie finds himself within the night dimension at the entrance to the dream gate. atop the fountain in the center of the plaza sits a purple jester with one leg crossed over the other, playing a soft tune with his fingers as if he was holding a flute. he seems to pay no mind to the new visitor to the night dimension.

sleep  isn't  something  the  beast  usually  indulges  in  —  the  whole  immortal,  ageless,  MOSTLY  TIRELESS  being  schtick  more  or  less  reduces  it  to  one  big  time  waster.  (  who  wants  to  stare  at  a  stage  with  its  curtains  drawn?  )  he  doesn't  even  have  the  excuse  of  slipping  away  into  some  comfy-cozy  dream  —  oh  no,  no,  no.  seems  his  creators,  in  all  of  their  INFINITE  BENEVOLENCE,  thought  the  part  of  his  head  that  churned  out  those  escapist  fantasies  was  best  put  towards  storing  more  knowledge.  so,  shadow  milk  just  doesn't  get  to  experience  dreams  —  lucky  him!  instead,  the  only  thing  he's  given  is  a  lovely  little  dip  into  the  momentary  cessation  of  consciousness  and  it's  back  to  the  old  grind!  no  escape,  not  even  when  he's  asleep!  unless  someone  or  something  deliberately  goes  out  of  their  way  to  mess  with  his  head,  of  course  —  it's  happened  before  and  it  is  equally  as  unpleasant  and  inadvisable.  suffice  to  say,  he  really  doesn't  go  out  of  his  way  to  nap  very  much.

even  so,  from  the  moment  shadow  milk  opens  his  (  many,  many,  many  )  eyes,  he's  pretty  sure  this  has  to  be  a  dream.  or  maybe  an  illusion?  he  doesn't  recognize  this  place  at  all,  and  he's  sprawled  out  on  the  GROUND  like  a  gangly,  broken  puppet  —  which  is  the  kind  of  indignity  the  beast  would  never  permit  if  he  had  a  say  in  the  matter.  he  slowly  sits  up,  clawed  fingertips  pressing  delicately  to  one  temple.  what,  did  he  hit  his  head?  knock  something  loose  —  maybe  something  that  makes  him  a  little  less  him?

the  sound  of  music  suddenly  pulls  him  out  of  his  musings.  shadow  milk  looks  up,  tilting  his  head  at  the  melody.  somehow,  the  little  soloist  is  playing  without  any  instrument  in  sight  —  but  that's  peanuts  compared  to  the  beast's  very  strong  hunch  he  isn't  quite  a  cookie  at  all.  (  is  he  the  one  who  brought  him  here?  he  supposes  it  isn't  unheard  of  for  the  villain  to  make  a  brief  appearance  in  the  first  act.  )  the  tendrils  of  his  hair  twitch  and  lash  like  angry  tails  before  shadow  milk  forces  them  to  lie  still.  there's  no  point  in  getting  angry  before  he's  read  the  synopsis  of  this  production.  may  as  well  go  and  greet  the  supporting  cast,  hmm?

❝  he-LLOOOO!  ❞  he's  floating  on  the  opposite  side  of  the  fountain  when  he  calls  out,  chin  propped  up  in  his  hands.  shadow  milk  swings  his  legs  a  little  bit  as  he  speaks.  ❝  hola!  bonjour!  guten  tag!  ❞  he  flashes  a  wide,  toothy  grin.  ❝  do  you  take  requests,  my FASHIONABLY dressed  fellow?  ... asking  for  a  friend.  ❞

at  the  sound  of  another,  the  playing  is  quick  to  cease  –  an  abrupt  end  to  an  otherwise  pleasant  tune.  nights  turns  his  head,  hands  slowly  losing  shape  of  his  instrument  before  he  stares  at  the  other  with  pause.  something  looked  off,  looked  wrong.         ❝   a  nightmaren…  here  ?   ❞        the  words  are  barely  audible,  said  under  a  confused  bit  of  breath  released  from  his  lips.  large  blue  eyes  that  glisten  like  sapphires  study  the  features  of  the  new  being  before  him  as  nights  stands.  (   though,  there  is  no  floor  beneath  him,  simply  air.   )   it's  there  he  floats  for  a  moment,  before  putting  his  hands  on  his  hips  and  bending  over  towards  the  other,  strangely  close  despite  the  worry  of  a  nightmaren  entering  the  dream  gate.

❝   that  depends  on  you,  i  can  play  whatever  you  like,  as  long  as  you  answer  a  question  of  mine  !   ❞        despite  his  reservations,  nights'  voice  has  a  slight  lilt  to  it,  indicating  that  he's  not  all  worried.  after  all,  if  there  was  a  problem  here,  he'd  be  sure  to  take  care  of  it.  the  jester  leans  back,  floating  in  a  pose  as  if  he  were  sitting  on  a  chair,  one  leg  atop  the  other,  arms  crossed.          ❝   how  did  you  get  here  ?   and  who  are  you  ?   ❞       this  entity  didn't  feel  like  a  nightmaren,  and  yet,  he  so  much  resembled  one…
