sometimes i listen to a musical that sucks ass and one of my biggest thoughts is usually "man... sondheim is so good"
i listened to the sondheim disco album. here's what i have to say.
from the first track i thought it could be potentially very lit. with the title, it seemed like it was gonna be some sort of intense dreamlike fugue piece with samples and references and disco beats which is quite fun! but then... the songs start....... and they're actually just really crap mashups with a few nods to legendary disco tracks here and there.
its like someone saw sondheims entire body of work and decided, for his 90th birthday by the way, it would be a great idea to take his lyrics and melodies, strip them of their orchestration along with any kind of emotional integrity and give them to some soulless performers to belt out. itself, a disco album is completely contradictory to any of sondheims work, which i thought might make for a very interesting piece especially when combined with sampling and dj techniques. instead it was just an absolute butchery of sondheim's composition AND disco AND djing.
i have no idea what the intent behind the album was, wether it was a money grab or a genuine celebration of sondheim, but it does not come across well if you have any appreciation for the music sondheim made. it's not even good fun because the disco is crap. the songs are not translated well to the genre and the production is so overpolished and undanceable. it has one thing going for it: it's hilariously bad. i couldn't stop myself from laughing at times.
ONE DAY someone will be able to successfully combine musical theatre with another genre and hold enough of both to make it a worthy endeavour, but this album definitely did not.
i will probably listen to it again
listening to the sondheim disco mashup album i'll return with thoughts when it's finished. it's not looking good
hello my name is oliver and im here to talk about starkid and musicals. here's my introduction
im 21 and i'm crazy into theatre, musicals and parody. i'm also into gaming, opera, drag and crafts. i'm autistic and trans and fucking lit as hell.
i got into starkid when i was 7 or 8 years old. my sister was really into avpm so i would watch it with her and her friend. from then on i was absolutely obsessed and watched every new show as it came out (anyone else remember watching the shows on starkid's website?). i was and continue to be insufferable about starkid and spent many a break time at school acting out entire scenes and explaining every joke. now me, my sister and our friend have seen starkid in london and we're seeing tgwdlm later this month đđ. my favourite show is twisted, i don't like black friday or nerdy prudes or cinderella's castle but the rest i love.
i was always into musicals, my favourites growing up were annie, oliver, thoroughly modern millie, mamma mia, joseph and chitty chitty bang bang. now i'm an absolute sondheim FIEND. and a william finn fiend. im very specific about what musicals i like, im not a big fan of many of the big ones or recent ones because i think a lot of them lack soul but if they're really good fun i forgive it. i fucking hate andrew lloyd webber im sorry i just hate him. i know i said i liked joseph and i still do i just can't stand him or any of his other work. i don't mind some of jesus christ superstar but the rest i could do without. im really big on concept musicals like company and i love shows with a lot of character exploration and interesting scores.
i'm making this blog so that i have somewhere to talk about this stuff because nobody around me is into it like i am and i need an outlet.
i'm gonna talk about both starkid and musicals in general because it didn't make sense to make two separate blogs but to be fair if u like one u should like the other.
this is gonna be my zone to air out my biggest most controversial opinions so if u don't like it GET LOST!
lots of love oliver
