The Three Broomsticks is warm and buzzing, butterbeer foam glowing gold in the lantern light. Youâre halfway through your drink when a boy from Charms slides into the seat beside you, all bright smiles and too-eager chatter.
âYou should let me buy you one of those pumpkin pastries,â he says, leaning close. âTheyâre even better when shared.â
He grins.
Across the table, Remus goes very still.
He doesnât say anythingâhe rarely interruptsâbut the way his fingers tighten around his mug tells you everything. He keeps his eyes lowered, shoulders tense, jaw set in a quiet line that only someone who knows him well would notice.
The boy beside you doesnât.
But you do.
Remus normally smiles at your jokes. He normally adds little comments to your stories. He normally relaxes just being near you.
Now? He looks like his heart is somewhere under the floorboards.
The other boy keeps talkingâabout classes, about Hogsmeade, about youâbut your attention keeps drifting to Remus. The slow ache growing in his expression. The way he canât quite meet your eyes.
You finally reach your hand across the table, palm open.
A silent request.
Remus looks at it for a long moment⌠and then gently looks away.
Thatâs enough.
âExcuse me,â you say quickly, sliding out of your seat.
Before he can think of an excuse to escape, you grab Remusâ sleeve and tug him toward the back hallway, away from the noise and crowd.
âWhaâheyââ he murmurs, stumbling after you, cheeks flushed. âWhat are youâ?â
The moment youâre alone, you turn to face him.
âRemus,â you say softly. âWhatâs wrong?â
His eyes drop. âNothing.â
âRemus.â
He sighsâa tiny, defeated sound. âYou were busy.â
âBusy with what?â
He hesitates, rubbing the back of his neck.
ââŚbeing flirted with,â he finally whispers, almost too quiet to hear.
You blink. âIs that why youâre acting like youâve been hexed?â
His eyes close for a second, embarrassed. âI didnât like it,â he murmurs. âBut I didnât want to make things awkward for you.â
Your chest warms. You step closer, your voice softening.
âYou didnât make anything awkward.â
His eyes lift.
âYou just worried me.â
Remusâ brows knit gently. âWorried you?â
You nod. âBecause you looked sad. And quiet. And⌠a little hurt.â
He swallows. âI didnât want to be. I just⌠liked the idea that maybe⌠you might smile at me like that.â
You take his handâslowly, giving him time to pull away if he wants to.
He doesnât.
âYou know why I wasnât flirting back?â you murmur.
He shakes his head.
âBecause the person I wanted to sit next to,â you say softly, âwas already at the table.â
Remusâ breath stutters, eyes going wide and warm all at once.
âReally?â he whispers, as if afraid the word might break.
You squeeze his hand. âReally.â
A flush spreads across his cheeksâsoft, rosy, so very Remus. His fingers trace over yours, hesitant but hopeful.
âIâm sorry,â he says quietly. âI shouldnât be jealous. You can talk to anyone you want.â
âI can,â you agree gently. âBut Iâd rather talk to you.â
His smileâtiny, shy, stunnedâsparks something warm in your chest.
âYou mean that?â he asks.
You nod. âYes, Remus.â
He takes a small step closer, close enough that you can feel the warmth of him, smell the faint chocolate on his clothes.
He pulls you in carefully, like youâre something precious. His arms wind around you, gentle and warm, his forehead resting against your temple. He holds you like heâs dreamed of itâreverent, almost overwhelmed.
âIâve wanted this for a long time,â he murmurs into your hair.
âMe too.â
He pulls back just enough to meet your eyes.
ââŚCan I kiss you?â
You nod, and he leans inâslowly, sweetly, like heâs savoring the moment more than the kiss itself. His lips brush yours in a warm, gentle pressure, soft but full of feeling. You melt into him, and he sighs against your mouth, relief and affection tangled together.
When you pull back, he presses one last kiss to your forehead, lingering there.
âStill jealous?â you whisper.
His thumb strokes over your cheek.
âOnly of anyone who gets to be near you when Iâm not.â
You laugh softly. âYouâre adorable.â
He blushes again. ââŚPlease donât tell Sirius that.â
âNever,â you promise.
You lace your fingers together as you walk back out.
This time, Remus sits beside you.
And he doesnât let go of your hand.
