If we live in a country that is willing to stand aside while people are killed on our streets for crimes as petty as shoplifting simply because of their race, how can we claim to be a nation that stands up against oppression? After centuries of brutality being inflicted on us by occupying forces, how are so many of us seemingly more than happy to stand and watch the same thing continue into the 21st century just because it's happening to someone from a different background? For a nation that claims to stand with the oppressed, we sure as hell need to start acting like it.
