“You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.” (1 John 3:5-6)
I always struggled with this verses. How on earth could this be true while still on this side of Heaven? What does it even mean to abide in him? To read my Bible every day? To pray more? To go to church? Maybe those have a part in abiding I guess. But these doesn’t necessarily stop me from sinning.
Abiding means so much more. To be fully present. To persevere. To endure. To stand firmly no matter what. To be constantly on the pursuit of Him. To search His heart with all of mine. To be aware of what ground our relationship rests on and most of all WHO is the One I’m having this relationship with. The King of Kings. The Lord of Lords. The Creator of the Universe. The Beginning and the End.
The One who is HOLY, HOLY, HOLY.
And the One who became flesh for me. The One who emptied himself and “humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
How could I disobey Him if I’m aware of this every moment of my life? I don’t think I could. And still, I sin over and over again. The problem is, I’m not aware of it every moment of my life. I forget so easily. I’m not abiding in Him.
If we could ever comprehend what it cost Jesus to free us from the bondage of sin, we would NEVER EVER want to even go near to anything that falls short of His glory and holiness.
Let us never forget about the cross, the price of our salvation.
