The participation deadline for the (summer) Rock Internship Program has been extended to April 30th.

Remember, this earn-and-learn offering is intended for non-profit, as well as for-profit organizations – irrespective of the organization’s product or service. Ideal targets include, but are not limited to, businesses that have:

·        Existing collegiate-level internships.

·        Existing job shadowing, co-op and/or apprenticeships (youth and adult).

·        Organizational, resource and/or leadership capacities.

·        Engagement and connectivity with past and/or ongoing workforce and talent development activities.

In addition, here are some helpful talking points re: the program:

·        This is a paid ($10/hr.), four-week and one half day, earning-and-learning work experience specifically designed for incoming Rock County H.S. seniors. Interns work 4 hours per day (M-Thur.) at their designated worksite – logging 16-hours weekly and then four hours every Friday at BTC’s Central Campus. The Friday hours are structured workshops, covering various topics and also providing additional ACP development, support, etc.

·        This program builds upon the Inspire Rock County initiative, which is anchored by the requirement that all WI (public) high school students must have an Academic & Career Plan (ACP). Rock County was one of the first areas in WI to implement the ACP requirement before it became a statewide mandate in fall 2017.

·        Participating worksites must assign a dedicated intern worksite supervisor, as well as an alternate, and contribute $800 to support the program.

·        Rock County 5.0 is providing matching funds to cover additional program related expenses.

·        BTC is serving as the Internship Coordinator, responsible for daily program administration and support. Meanwhile, the SW Workforce Development Board is the Employer of Record for all participating (student) interns. This approach alleviates a tremendous amount of administrative, on-boarding, payroll and related overhead costs that participating employers would normally absorb directly.

Member Spotlight: Dave's Evansville Ace Hardware In 1971 Evansville residents Margaret and Gordon Brigham opened a hardware store called Coast-to-Coast. In 1990 Coast-to-Coast filed bankruptcy and the Brighams decided to franchise with Ace Hardware. They retired in 2003. This is when Dave Warren took ownership. Since Dave has taken over he has added new departments and updated equipment such as phones and computer systems. He has also built and moved the store to a larger location off of Brown School Road. 

Member Spotlight: Eager Free Public Library A free service for Evansville-area residents unable to visit the library. Volunteers deliver and pick up library materials to people with illnesses or disabilities that prevent them from using the library. Contact the library to arrange for library materials to be delivered. A library staff member will help select books.

Dr Jon Mandrell

Dr. Mandrell serves as the Vice President of Academics and Student Services at Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, Illinois. He holds an Ed.D. in Community College Leadership from Ferris State University. In addition to his administrative role, Dr. Mandrell gained teaching experience from Sauk Valley Community College as an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice.  Prior to his community college career, Dr. Mandrell served Oregon, Illinois as a police officer.

Anthony (Tony) Miksa

Dr. Miksa is the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, Illinois.  Previously, he served in dean capacities at Elgin Community College for three years and Kishwaukee Community College for five years where he was also a Professor of Mathematics.  Dr. Miksa received his Ed.D. from National Louis University.

Tracy Pierner

Dr. Pierner serves as the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Henry Ford College, located in Dearborn, Michigan.  Prior to coming to Henry Ford College, he was the Dean of Technical Education at Aiken Technical College in Aiken, South Carolina.  Dr. Pierner received his Ph.D. from Indiana State University and has been a faculty member at a university in South Carolina and a technical college in Wisconsin.  Before joining higher education, Dr. Pierner was employed in the private sector as an engineer.

Greg Schmitz

Dr. Schmitz, most recently served as the President of VGM Education of The VGM Group in Waterloo, Iowa.  Prior to his experience in this sector of education, he was the President of Hawkeye Community College, also in Waterloo, Iowa.  He was promoted to President after serving as the Vice President of Administration and Finance for the College.  Throughout his career, he has held various chief financial officer positions for private industry in the State of Iowa.  He has a Ph.D. from Iowa State University.

Muddassir Siddiqi

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is applying to the US Department of Transportation to receive funding from a new grant program.  US DOT has initiated the Fostering Advancements in Shipping and Transportation for the Long-Term Achievement of National Efficiencies (FASTLANE) grant program after Congressional passage of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.

The FASTLANE grants will provide dedicated funding to transportation projects addressing critical freight movements.  The program is designed to support freight and highway projects of national and regional significance.

We respectfully ask you to support WisDOT’s application to receive FASTLANE grants for the I-39/90 expansion project in Dane and Rock Counties.  You can support these projects by providing endorsement letters patterned after the attached template.  Your endorsement letters, addressed to US DOT, can be sent directly to US DOT or back to us.  Either way, we will need to have a signed PDF sent back by Friday, April 8 to include in our application packets.

(Rock County,  WI) In response to strong demand, three speculative building projects are advancing in the Janesville-Beloit MSA. Combined, these projects represent 355,000 SF of new, Class A Industrial / Warehouse space. Two of the three projects will occur in Janesville, while the third project will be located in the City ofBeloit. These spec projects are slated to begin construction this spring/summer, with an anticipated fall 2016 market delivery date.

4298 Capital Circle II, located in Janesville's East Side Business Park, will have an initial 100,000 SF footprint and an expansion capability to reach up to 200,000 SF. Gilbank Construction, Inc. will be providing construction services for the project, while Angus Young Associates provided the architectural, design and engineering services. Bill Mears, Coldwell Banker McGuire Mears & Associates, is handling the property's marketing / brokerage activities. This is the second (Janesville) spec project for Badger Property Investments principles Tom Lasse and Terry McGuire.

100 Innovation Drive, located in Janesville's STH 11 Business Park, will have an initial 150,000 SF footprint and an expansion capability to reach up to 300,000 SF. The property is being developed by Greywolf Partners, Inc. and Scott Furmanski, CBRE's Milwaukee office, is responsible for the project's marketing / brokerage services.

To facilitate both of these spec projects, the City of Janesville provided a Tax Increment Financing package.

2400 E. CTH P, located at the WI/IL Stateline in Beloit's I-90 Business Park, will have an initial 105,000 SF footprint and an expansion capability to reach up to 420,000 SF. The property is being developed by Hendricks Commercial Properties.  Corporate Contractors, Inc. will be providing construction services, while Angus Young Associates provided the project's architectural, design and engineering services. Chase Brieman, CBRE's Madison office, will be handling the project's marketing / brokerage services.

Administrative Taskss

Check/respond to voicemails daily.  Answer phone while in the office.

Check wunderlist/schedule for upcoming projects/deadlines.

Print weekly schedule for the door.

Retrieve and process mail daily.

Put out garbage/recycling weekly.

Administer Chamber bucks program (receipts and purchases).

Complete time sheets and get sign off from E.D./Board Member.

Keep website (member directory, calendar, available properties, etc.) up-to-date on regular basis.

Maintain cleanliness of office; including but not limited to (vacuuming, dusting, brochure and storage organization, windows, bathroom, desk, files).

Review training manual for full list of duties.  Perform other tasks as assigned.

Marketing & Promotional

Ensure event, ticket logs, membership, press databases, etc. are up-to-date.

Create weekly e-blast and additional e-mail marketing communication as needed.

Update Facebook on regular basis - share member posts, community events, Chamber updates, business pertinent articles or Evansville in the news.

Events:

Create and distribute press releases, fliers, and list on Chamber of Commerce calendar, Facebook pages and community calendars.

Prepare registration, ticket logs, goodie bags or other items necessary for event.

Assist on-site the day of the event; prep, during the event and clean-up.

Communication & Work Ethic:

Keep Executive Director up-to-date on status of projects, schedule, changes etc.

Call or text if you have time sensitive questions.  

If you are unable to meet a deadline - let Executive Director know in advance and propose solutions or scheduling changes.

Utilize problem solving and other contacts and resources (Google, Board Members, City Hall, etc.) to find answers to questions that may be posed..  If you are unable to get a sufficient response - get phone number from person and call them back as soon as possible.  

Take Initiative: Review Wunderlist for projects geared towards slower times. Request additional projects during slow times.  If you notice a need that is not being addressed or have an idea for something to benefit the chamber; let Executive Director know.  

Personal projects/contacts should be performed on your own time.
