I have prepared a personal guide on how to self study Korean! So, if you are interested in learning Korean, and have no idea where to start, give this a read and hopefully it should give you some encouragement!

I should hopefully keep this guide updated. Updated on: 160521

There are so many words in Korean, however, it is very hard to remember all of them. This is a list of words that I think are essential and that I should always remember. To memorize them just read this everyday. I’ll be adding more whenever I find new words, so keep checking this post for updates. Feel free to use this as a reference as well!

Greetings + Farewells:

안녕히 가세요: Good-bye! (to one who is leaving). Tip: 가 means go.

안녕히 계세요: Good-bye! (to one who is staying). 

수고하십니다: Hello! (to someone working)

수고하세요: Good-bye! (to someone working)

수고하셨어요: Thank you for helping me or Well done!

여보세요: Hello! or Hey there! (Hello on the telephone, or when peering into a dark house. Also means Look here!)

만나서 반갑습니다: Nice to meet you; nice to see you.

처음뵙겠습니다: Pleased to make your acquaintance.

또 뵙겠습니다: See you later! (Formal).

또 봐요: See you later! (Polite).

어서 오세요: Welcome!

들어 오세요: Come in!

Archchinese Dictionary  - An online dictionary with so much information about each character. Stroke order, similar words, meaning of the individual radicals and so much more.

Hanzidb.org - Basically just a giant list of Chinese words in order from most frequently used to least. A great vocab (check-) list.

FluentinMandarin - A great blog with amazing, easily understandable posts about how to learn the language best.

YangYang on Youtube - She has incredibly elaborate videos about everything really, but the one about zi, si, ci, and so on is one of my personal favourites  

Slow Chinese - so many videos with the text available in Chinese, English and more. It’s quite difficult though!

When I start learning a language, rather than thinking “I need to learn all the grammar that there is in this language,” I think “I need to learn the grammar that I need to put a sentence together.”

Here’s a list of the concepts that I go through and learn first. Personally, I like to google each concept to get the answer (e.g. “negation in Basque”, or “prepositional phrases in Basque” – there actually are none, so I learn the equivalent), because I find it faster. But online courses also work fine. Just pay attention to whether they cover all of these concepts.

You can express yourself surprisingly flexibly when you know 300 well-chosen words (and grammar) in a language. (By “words”, I really mean lemmas, i.e. I’m counting “run” and “runs” as one word.) When trying to talk about a topic, there will probably be some key words that you don’t know, but you can ask for or look up those words and then use them for the rest of the time that you’re talking about the topic. You can see an example of how using the 300 words works.

Here’s the list of 300. I hope it’s a useful guideline and starting point for you. I may revise it, so please refer to the original post for the most up-to-date version. In addition to these general words, there will probably be some others that will be among the most useful for you (e.g. “class” if you’re a student). When you find yourself using them again and again, learn them too.

* Note: You should really think of this as a list of concepts. Your goal isn’t to translate each word to a word in your target language, but to figure out how to express that concept in your target language. In some cases, a concept may translate to multiple words (for example, I listed “you” as a concept, but in some languages there are different words for “formal you” and “informal you”). Some concepts may translate to no word at all, but rather a certain grammatical structure (for example, Russian doesn’t use the verb “have”; to say “I have a cat” in Russian, you say “at me there is a cat”).

Use a dictionary to find out how to express these concepts in your target language (for some subtleties, you’ll need to google or ask in a forum). After that, I suggest memorizing the words by making yourself a Memrise course with the words and going through the course. Learn to be able to go from the concept to the word in your target language, not the other way around; you want to be able to produce the word, not just recognize it. You should also learn how to pronounce your target language. To hear native speakers pronounce words in your target language, check out Forvo.

I always hear people say “Learn Parisian French, you’ll be understood in Québec”. While that is true, keep in mind that you also have to understand the Québécois in order to have a conversation with them. So here are some common expressions used in Quebec!

When there’s an action you would like to do, just attach this grammar pattern to the verb stem! It’s the same whether or not the stem ends in a vowel or a consonant.

보고 싶어요. // I want to see you/miss you. 

빙수를 먹고 싶어요. // I would like to eat bingsoo (shaved ice).

낮잠을 자고 싶어요. // I want to take a nap.

산책하고 싶어요. // I want to go for a walk.

거기에 가고 싶지 않아요. // I don’t want to go there.

A short textbook note-taking tutorial

I use tables whenever possible to organize materials, and as you can see I format them differently depending on the content they contain. For vocabulary and situations where I’m employing tables in lieu of columns (which conserves space), I’ll make the border white, but for tables like the ones on pages 1 and 2, I’ll keep the border there for definition.

I title each section with the subtitle given in the book and underline it, then make a vocabulary list (bolding terms), and insert my tables. For actual notes (as shown on page 4), I try to keep it as simple as I can with lists instead of blocks of text.

Afterwards, I’ll go into Quizlet and make a set of flashcards (the last image shows the beginnings of what flashcards for this set of notes would look like). I’ll cut out unnecessary content from the notes (and trim examples down to prompts rather than full explanations), and in examples like page 4, I’ll condense each numbered point and its sub-points to the section I bolded, which summarizes the general idea.

try your best. not everyone can get all As, and getting all As does not make you better than everyone else. just do the best you can and be the best person you can be.

don’t sleep in class! i know it seems so so tempting but slept my way through geography last year and i got a C in my exam instead of the expected A so…

Don’t tick off your teacher, follow the rules to an extent, get to class on time, respect your classmates and teachers. you know, just be a decent person.

be positive!!! and not just for the first week or so, keep the positivity going throughout the whole school year. if you don’t believe in yourself then why should anyone else?
