SASS mixin for a retina-ready custom cursor
I was making a custom cursor for a microsite and noticed on my macbook retina that the rendered result was pixelated. By default, the 1x pixel density graphic was being rendered. Luckily though, there is a work around for webkit browsers using -webkit-image-set
I have two base-64 PNG images, crosshairs.png (32x32 pixels) and crosshairs-hi.png (64x64 pixels). Putting 16 16, after the filepath centers the x/y coordinates of the hotspot of the cursor (if you want to use something like crosshairs). Here’s my mixin:
@mixin crosshairsCursor {   cursor: url('../assets/images/crosshairs.png') 16 16, auto;   cursor: -webkit-image-set(    url('../assets/images/crosshairs.png') 1x,    url('../assets/images/crosshairs-hi.png') 2x   ) 16 16, auto; }
To add your new custom to button to elements like links and buttons, just add this to their css ruleset:
@include crosshairsCursor;

I helped stage a bunch of in-game screenshots like the valiant Scyther going out fighting to the huge Snorlax seen above.

In the interactive 3D feature Stealing the Aral Sea, I patched together satellite data from NASA and the USGS in Cinema4D, designed a layout in Sketch, and using jekyll and threejs, built a scrolling experience demonstrating how what was once the world's fourth largest lake has become a desert.
Before and After - Interface Redesign and Skinning
I worked with cartographer Chris Henrick to create an interactive visualization about real-estate flipping in NYC for the advocacy group NYC-REIC.Â
Chris spear-headed the project, developing the innovative data-crunching functionality and I designed an interface that emphasized ease of use, clarity of message, and cause narrative that stayed within the brand’s pre-established visual language.

Design+Technology is a graduate department at Parsons. Each graduating class organizes a public show exhibiting their Masters thesis projects. I was approached by the thesis committee to serve a Creative Director role in the design and development of the 2015 exhibition website.
I began formulating a strategy by using the previous exhibition site as a point of critical departure. We wanted a fresh approach that ditched the flashy bells and whistles and tech-valley corporate aesthetics of the 2014 site more in favor of the neutral minimalism of a fine arts institution or the slickness of an art gallery. We wanted something more editorial and essentialist.
Parsons is well known for its challenging and groundbreaking approaches, and progress isn’t something that can happen just by blindly mimicking the corporate sector. I put together a deck to present a new direction, driven by these axioms: show don’t tell (put the content first, showcase the value of the actual projects as the primary value of the experience), create connections (leverage the web as tool for social conversation and exploration), and dissolve boundaries (drill thresholds between networked and physical spaces)."
I worked on the Designing Multiplicity site with Melanie Bossert, Bryan Ma, Gabriel Gianordoli and Yuchen Zhang, creating a survey of the work of over 80 graduates. All of the project content was submitted by the students themselves, and orchestrating this social process was a colossal task. Each student was given the opportunity to design their own personal logo, following the guidelines of the show’s branding identity. We designed the entire system from scratch, down to the interface icons.Â

CONSEQ (VERSION ALPHA 1.0)
by Evander Batson and Heloise Cullen
Performance art tool for live video editing
CONSEQ (video controller/sequencer) is an openFrameworks OSX app for controlling dynamic video art for multimedia performances. With the stroke of the keyboard, instantaneously live-cut video projections to sync up with performances – no matter what is currently happening on stage.
With CONSEQ, you can take masterful control of your custom-made visuals at any concert or performance. Jump between random cuts within specific video segments to match the tempo and mood of live music, or add a psychedelic twist by slowing down and reversing the playback. Dim the screen to build up drama, and unleash an explosion of images during the grand finale.

I visited the studio of Brooklyn-based artist Matthew Schreiber with editor Bob Maynard, filmmaker Ethan Goldwater, and coordinator Elea Wilder. I assisted with the production photography of documenting the artist's studio and his holographic work. Under the creative direction of Maynard, I built out a microsite to present the interview, photography, and the videography (the reel was edited by the talented Johnny Bassett and scored by The Haxan Cloak).

Teen Body - Quarterlife
Quarterlife is a song about a 25 year old looking back on the missed opportunities of his life. For this design I played with the idea of the quarter, the number four, the square, and imagery (run through Kim Asendorf's Java-based pixel sorting algorithm) invoking a feeling of lost or dissolving youth.

This is part of an archaeological visualization project I made for the UMASS:Amherst Poggio Civitate Excavation and the Murlo Archaeological Museum. This rendering is a hypothesis of how this Etruscan palace may have looked in the 7th c. BCE.
This work was put on display in the Murlo Archaeological Museum and used in various academic publications.

An American on a bike trip across Kyrgyzstan is thrust into a world of conflict and reconciliation. I designed and developed this web feature to showcase a photographic essay by Ethan Goldwater and to experiment with utilizing long-form interactive multimedia for narrative storytelling.
I began the design process by creating paper prototypes to experiment with interactivity and animation.
Even with the sprawling amount of content, some photographs needed a heavy amount of processing in order to be used in the way I wanted. I used photoshop to turn this photo of the tunnel into a container background.
The website was unveiled and projected at the opening premiere of the show at the Hover Crafts office in Dec 2013.
