Zach Lieberman’s Perfect Colors

Zach Lieberman has always been a bit of a mystery to me.  Whether by accident or design he completely bypassed Tumblr and never created looping gifs the way so many other popular Creative Coders I have written about have done.  You will not find a viral loop of his work the way you would with Bees and Bombs or Wavegrower.

But Zach Lieberman is a seminal figure in Creative Coding for many reasons, not least among them that he was one of the creators of openFrameworks, a tool set that many Creative Coders use today.  He also works as an artist creating many installations and videos for clients and galleries, and teaches at the famous Parson’s School of Design and the aptly named School for Poetic Computation, which he co-founded.

However, Zach Lieberman’s work is solidly in the vein of other Creative Coders.  Lately he has committed to daily generative art on Instagram, as many creative coders (and other artists) do.  His work looks and feels like many other generative artists:  He takes an idea and iterates on it until he feels he has explored it fully, and then moves on.  In his own words (from a recent Verge Interview)

“Some people have the approach of doing a daily thing like, “I’m going to write a song every day” or “write a poem every day” — but I actually try to not make something new, but just say, “How can I change or iterate on something that I’ve done before, in order to make something new? What’s the smallest change that I can do in order to make a new thing?”That takes a lot of pressure off. I find a lot of things that bring you joy through sketching is seeing how ideas change and evolve and go a different direction. I think if I had to do something new every day, I would stop really quickly. It’d be hard.”
