status: open to all setting: carnival day one, game alley

SHE HAS ABOUT TEN MINUTES , GIVE OR TAKE before she knows mimi is expecting her back. using the classic ‘brb, bathroom break’, she turns the corner toward the most exciting part of the carnival ― the prizes. as she reaches the game alley, she spots a familiar figure which causes a smile to curve on her lips. tapping the other’s shoulder, she stands with her hands behind her back, swinging from side to side as she bats her eyelashes. sweet dulcet intertwined with a hint of deviousness, “for the sake of time, let me just get to the point ― what will it take for you to win me, that?” she says as she points to one of the stuffed animals on the prize wall.

virginia appears just in time, mere moments before vanessa throws the dart in their hand at one of the balloons tacked to a board. “please,” they grin, “if i win, that prize is all mine.” still, they glance over the prize wall with renewed interest, trying to pick the one they might be willing to part with. “alright, maybe if i win the giraffe or something, you can have it. but what incentive do i have?” a single brow arches high as vanessa’s lips shift from grin to smirk, crooked and challenging. 

          jason pokes at his yogurt, more for something to do than for any desire to eat it though he finally raises a spoonful to his mouth. his sullen aura is lightened a little at vanessa’s antics, a bright spot of playfulness that brings him back to the easier time of his younger years of sneaking into the kitchen with his billet brother — there seems to be more and more of that at eonia these days : innocuous reminders of times passed that don’t dig in so painfully anymore. don’t talk with your mouth full — it’s on the tip of his tongue, accompanied with an appropriate expression but thankfully vanessa is ahead of the program before jason gives a gold star demonstration of why the hockey team calls him mom ( not to mention maybe a little hypocritical too ).     “ pretty sure they were closer to comatose than an observing state, ”     he says instead, setting his yogurt aside in favor of picking of kraken who is still settled at his feet.     “ — maybe that’s like goldfish death row. ”

they can read jason like the back of their own hand, the twists and turns of his mood throughout the day. he’s taking the plight of goldfish at the carnival more seriously than vanessa realized, and so it’s with a frown that she leans forward and runs her fingers through the top of kraken’s furry head. jason’s heart is that of a hero; vanessa’s, on the other hand, is that of a survivor who prioritizes only the skin on their back. but for jason — perhaps the first poseidon child who she can actually call brother without a sarcastic laugh in her throat — she takes on his burdens. for jason, she becomes atlas, and she will hold the sky up to see him laugh. “then we should do something about it.” once the idea is spoken aloud, it takes hold on vanessa and their eyes shine furiously as they follow their train of thought. “i mean, our dad is poseidon. fish are friends, not food or prisoners on death row and all that.”

          3 am in the poseidon house is a typically QUIET hour and that’s no different now as jason stands bathed in the light of the open refrigerator, the only sounds the familiar ones of water ripping through the channels of the first floor and the low murmur of kraken’s purrs as she winds between his ankles. the shelves he regards are far from empty but he still takes his time, more staring than deciding before he finally picks up a large container of yogurt and shuts the door and turns.     “ i can’t stop thinking about those GOLDFISH — ”     he’s retrieving a spoon from a drawer now, then digging into the viscous food with little gusto as he finally settles back against one of their counters.     “ — i thought they were dead, they were so quiet. ”

ask vanessa, and they’ll deny it with their last breath — but this, at least, vanessa is thankful to poseidon for. this quiet moment between her and jason, a warm beat of silence and understanding that is enough to make up for years of feeling without a family. they swing their legs back and forth as they sit atop the counter, scooping ice cream out of the pint. when they grin, the spoon nearly falls out of their mouth and vanessa catches it before it clatters to the floor. “ith thoo bah,” she tries to say with ice cream frozen on their tongue. a quick swallow, and vanessa tries again: “it’s too bad we can’t, you know, TALK to them.” mischief sparkles in the deep brown of her eyes as vanessa leans in and asks conspiratorially, “so did you talk to them? hear anything juicy?”
