shane effortlessly defying ilya's internal self deprecation with the most blunt, heartstopping, to the point sincerity is such an important part of their dynamic to me
"but you know me, i'm lazy, so." "i don't know that side of you at all."
"is that what we are going to do? relax?" "i hope so. i would like to relax with you. for once."
"because you like to be bad." "hey, that's not what this is. you and me. maybe it was at first but, not now, and not for a long time."
to the point where it even usurps other peoples interpretations of ilya before he gets the chance to internalize them -
"but, you hate him." "no. i mean, i get that. but no. i love him."
and ilya has that exact same subtly gobsmacked expression every time he does it
someone's bundled up 💗
Shane also needs to interact with other gay men just to understand how truly lucky he is. He needs to hear someone go off about going on Grindr to find a top for the night and then finding out that all of the guys who have the 'Hung' tag on their profile are packing like five and a half inches at MOST and then Shane has to be like "Oh that. Yeah that sounds rough." Meanwhile he lost his anal virginity to a knockout with model looks who works out for a living and started their relationship by jerking his enormous hog at him in a communal shower which has always been one of Shane's top five fantasies. And he's literally never had to be on The Apps because he's the bottom of all time actually and the DomTop with the enormous dick imprinted on him like a fucking duckling the first time Shane came untouched under him which was, I cannot stress this enough, when he LOST HIS VIRGINITY.
Like shut the fuck up Shane Hollander how does it feel to be the chosen one. He has to confront all of this because he needs to know that he has, once again, won at life in every meaningful way. And then he can sit there like :] while that sad bottom over there bemoans the Grindr biome.
19 Luglio 1992: Strage di Via D’Amelio
On 19 July 1992, Italian anti-mafia magistrate Paolo Borsellino was killed by a car bomb in Via D'Amelio, near his mother’s house in Palermo, less than two months after the death of his good friend, the anti-mafia magistrate Giovanni Falcone. The bomb attack also claimed the lives of five police officers: Agostino Catalano, Walter Cosina, Emanuela Loi (the first Italian policewoman to be killed in the line of duty), Vincenzo Li Muli and Claudio Traina.

shane is literally a Boyfriend guys he’s stocking the cottage full of stuff he’d never eat bc they’re ilya’s favourite snacks and he’s driving his passenger princess around and carrying ilya’s bags and asking what he wants for dinner and waking him up in the middle of the night to be like ‘hey here’s how we can be together forever until we are old and wrinkly. do u agree yes or yes’
and even before that he’s constantly checking if his baby is okay and he’s sitting in that stairwell cuddling ilya’s jacket and he’s so desperate to hold ilya’s hand when he’s off his head on painkillers. he’s rereading old texts. he’s got his phone in his hand and he’s texting ilya when he’s literally just got off the ice after winning the cup again and that’s years before they’re even together. he’s inviting ilya to the cottage because he gets two weeks off a year and he wants to spend them both with his favourite person
he’s a loverboy! he’s spent so so long wanting to be able to connect with ilya like this and now he finally can! he was born to play hockey but also to be ilya’s boyfriend!

the amount of people i have seen not get that the characters in overcompensating aren't meant to be likeable is kind of insane. they literally spell it out for you in the last ep. they are deeply, deeply flawed. they are fuck-ups. they are aware AND the writing itself is aware. saw some comments on a tiktok be like 'crazy how hailee is the only good friend in the whole show' and uh... no? no it's not crazy? no, it's the whole point? if we set aside how camp the show is, and how reminiscent of and a clear tribute to the 2010s it is, and how over the top and intentionally cringeworthy it gets—if we set aside all of that and really look at the characters for a sec, it's astounding how real they feel. and real people are, oftentimes, unlikeable. especially while still growing (although one could argue we never stop doing it) and dealing with loss, grief, mental illness, sexuality, societal pressure. you don't have to like a character to understand why they act the way they do. overcompensating isn't here to force-feed you something until you like the taste of it, it's just telling things how they are. these people are kinda shitty to each other, yeah, the show never tried to gloss over it—in fact, that's the plot. it's okay if you'd rather watch stuff that talks about mostly good, undoubtedly well-meaning, self-help book sounding people. that's fine. just stop expecting this show to be what you wish it could be, or what you thought it would be, and take it for what it so clearly is
