I see the “Why did Buffy have to get a shitty service industry job to pay the bills - Giles is clearly getting paid handsomely by the watcher’s council and she’s doing most of the actual work as the slayer?” point and I get it I do but I raise you that this is entirely intentional and you’re supposed to ask this. From S1 Buffy is told slaying isn’t a job, it’s not something she can quit, she can’t demand better rights or equal pay, it’s a duty, it’s an obligation, it’s an expectation. I think the comparison to the unpaid and oft unappreciated physical and mental labour women are expected to perform from childhood is pretty clear - the household chores and management that women and girls are expected to do uncompensated on top of work and study (and if they’re lucky, having a personal life). Buffy should be paid to be the slayer. And she also shouldn’t have to be the slayer. And housewives should get paid to clean dishes and the one woman in the grimy student flat should get paid to pick up the slack for her male flatmates and the girls whose parents work full time who have to be mini-mom to their brothers from age 5 should get paid - and also none of them should have to do any of that. I don’t think it’s confusing that the obvious allegory for the patriarchy doesn’t pay Buffy for her obvious allegory for women’s labour. I think that is one of the core points actually.
