Because all of that used to be projected self-hatred because each other's existence drags out parts of themselves they delude themselves about, they are mirrors who force each other to face the reality of who they were, who they are, who they can be

But by that point, maybe that hatred dissipated a little. They are still there, facing each other, dogs barking at their own reflection. By that point I think they are both aware that if one of them dies, that will kill the other too because reflections cannot exist without each other

And they still understand each other so well, that entire scene in 5656 is all about that. No they are not working together. And yet they destroy everything else around them, and they turn away from each other in the end
