a year by year timeline on how reader and jack met and got into a relationship in their med school/ residency days.
pairing: jack abbot x f!reader
warnings: fluff!! kissing, smoking, drinking, depictions of being pregnant and childbirth, established relationship, mentions of sex, probably inaccurate medical information, reader is 23 and jack is 25 at the start of the story
a/n: been thinking of this au for a while, can you tell i’ve been binging er? this is very long but i got carried away so enjoy!!!!
“Nah I can’t work on this solely in the ER,” Jack admitted, huffing in defeat as he snapped off his gloves and threw them on the floor.
“So…What are we going to do?” Javadi questioned, looking down at the patient on the bed who was in a critical condition, but was stable for the moment.
Robby and Jack glance at eachother, Robby pressed his lips together and shrugged while Jack nodded. “Page your wife.” Robby said.
“Wife?” Dennis questioned, Jack had never gone out of the way to mention you at all. “I didn’t know you had a wife?” Javadi chimed in, very confused.
“Dude… Open your ears. He talks about the other Dr. Abbot all the time.” Trinity snickered. Dennis and Victoria looked at eachother as the realisation creeped in.
“I thought that was just a coincidence,” Dennis said. “Nope. She is infact my beautiful wife,” Jack smiled proudly, Robby chuckled similarly to how he did back in the day when Jack bitched about you to him.
“Y/N just changed her name to Dr. Abbot a couple months ago, despite being married to Jack for years.” Robby clarified, Javadi and Dennis both nodding like it made sense.
“Dr. Abbot is currently spending a few weeks up in surgery, that’s why you haven’t been properly introduced to her yet.” Jack said.
“Why is she only in surgery for a couple weeks?” Javadi asked. “They’re short a surgeon. She has had a lot of experience in surgery, Y/N realised she didn’t like it pretty early on, but she’s a damn good surgeon.” Jack practically beamed.
At that moment, you burst through the doors. Slightly out of breath from taking the stairs rather than waiting on the elevator, and the fact Jack rarely pages you.
“You paged?” You smiled, assessing the situation infront of you.
Of course your first official day completing your last two years of med school fell on one of the hottest days in July. The heatwave had officially commenced and you were already grumpy thinking about sweating in a hospital for twelve hours straight, the only relief you’ll get is in the ambulance bay.
“Move!” You shouted to people on the street as you bounded down the streets of Pittsburgh to ensure you weren’t late on your first day.
Your shift begun at Eight AM and it was only ten minutes to eight and you were already stood infront of the emergency room doors. You took a deep breath and straightened out the clothes you were wearing.
You of course hadn’t been given a pair of scrubs or a white coat yet, so you wore what you thought was appropriate for a hospital and the temperature. You were dressed in a V-neck white tshirt and light breathable light blue trousers, and a pair of pink sneakers.
You walked into the hospital, immediately heading to the admit desk where they just told you to take a seat and that someone would be there to get you.
“Hey! You’re the new med student?” A friendly looking women, who you estimated to be in her 30s said to you. “Yes I am!” You smiled, telling her your name and shaking her hand.
“I’m Dr. Isobel Andrews, I’m an attending. You will report to me or any other attending on shift for any big mass casualties, for anything else you will report to your resident.” She smiled, gesturing for you to follow her.
“Speaking of your resident, here he is.” Isobel said, gesturing to a tall lanky brunette with a baby face. “Robinavitch!”
“Just Robby, please.” Robby said. “Whatever, this is your new med student!” Isobel said, introducing you both to eachother. “Another one?” Robby groaned, you were took aback and slightly offended. “Deal with it.” Isobel shrugged and walked away.
“I’m sorry that was rude, it’s not personal,” Robby started, gesturing you to walk with him. “I have an MS4, he’s a lot of work let’s just say that and always late.”
“I’m right on time, Mikey!” Another voice cut in, you looked to your side and seen a curly auburn haired boy, who looked entirely too jolly to be there. “It’s just Robby or Dr. Robinavitch to you.” Robby grumbled.
You widened your eyes ever so slightly when you seen him. You were positive you were gawking at him. Something about Jack Abbot captured your attention (and your heart) immediately.
You shook yourself out of that little trance and plastered a smile on your lips.
“I’m assuming you’re the other med student.” You chuckled. “This is Jack Abbot, who is a total pain in my ass.” Robby rolled his eyes, shoving a chart in Jacks direction.
“He loves me really.” Jack laughed, shaking your hand as you introduced yourself.
“Get to work, Abbot.” Robby said, shooing Jack away. “Go find someone to suture or some shit.” Robby said, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Yes, sir!” Jack saluted and sauntered away.
“He seems….” You started but couldn’t find the words. “Yeah. Abbot got dumped on me when I was an intern, today is literally the first day not being an intern and i’m still stuck with him.” Robby chuckled.
“Hey!” You hear Jack exclaim as he approaches you. You were almost finished your first shift, you were just stood at the nurses station catching up on some charting. “Hi!” You smiled.
“No one gave you your coat yet?” Jack asked, assessing your outfit. The only thing that gave away that you worked here was your badge. “Everyone’s been busy, so it’s understandable.” You shrugged.
“Come on, Let’s go find it.” Jack said, you got up and put your chart back on the rack. “How do you know where to find it?” You questioned, trailing behind him. “I’ve been here for a year, just about explored every part of this hospital.” Jack said, walking into a little storage room.
Jack begun digging through boxes, trying to find your coat. “Here you go.” Jack said, tossing a white coat at you. “Our coats are shorter since we’re med students, it looks stupid but you get used to it.”
“Thank you, Abbot.” You smiled, pulling on the white coat. “Please, Just call me Jack.” Jack said.
“You’ll find the scrubs over here,” Jack said, pointing to a shelf stacked with green scrubs. “Just incase you get anything spilled on you or your clothes get ruined. That’ll happen a lot here so don’t wear any of your nice clothes.”
“Thanks for the heads up.” You nodded, taking a pair of green scrubs in your size and holding them up. “Green?”
“I know they’re hideous but you’ll get used to them.” Jack sympathised. Suddenly, his pager started going off.
“911. I’ll see you around.” Jack said, placing a hand on your shoulder and running out the room.
That’s it. Jack Abbot had officially charmed you.
“You are such a pain in my ass. Do you know that, Abbot?” You huffed, pinching the bridge of your nose. “Oh, now I know you’re really pissed off when you call me Abbot,” Jack winced. “Please forgive me.”
You had been trying to study for your boards since you started your last year of med school which was a couple of months ago. It was hard to get sucked into your studying when you had Jack constantly annoying you.
Jack was officially Dr. Abbot now and loved to rub it in. He demanded that you refer to him as Dr. Abbot and he bossed you about when you worked a patient with him.
You and Jack had become bestfriends over the past year and a bit, something that was destined to happen when he was kind enough to show you where you could find everything.
You were both practically inseparable after that, any free time that you had you and Jack would study after.
After any emotionally draining shifts, you and Jack would go for a drink or get junk food together. Eating or drinking your sorrows away, it worked like a charm everytime. Those types of shifts always hit you the hardest and everytime, without fail, Jack would be by your side in anyway you needed him. Sometimes, you needed him to hold you and stroke your head and other times you just needed him in your company in any way.
In those moments where you were opening up and allowing yourself to be vulnerable infront of Jack, Jack also begun opening up to you too.
Jack told you about how he lost his leg back when he was still serving in the army, and how he was only eighteen when he lost his leg and had to get a prosthetic fitted.
You sympathised with him and ensured Jack always felt safe enough to trust you with things like that. Jack even showed you his prosthetic, something that he admitted took him a lot of courage to do and how you were one of the only ones (besides Robby) to see it.
After that interaction, it seemed like there was a breakthrough in your friendship. You knew that you could trust Jack with anything.
Everyone that you worked with called you both the “Barbie and Ken of the ER.” A nickname that you gladly accepted and took in stride. You and Jack always came into work together when you were both working the same time, usually you would both come into bickering and everyone would playfully roll their eyes.
“Why are you so pissy anyways?” Jack asked, taking a seat next to you and plucking your pen out of your hands. You glared at him and pushed your work away from you.
“I told you, I’m trying to study for these stupid boards that will determine if I become a doctor or not! What if I don’t have what it takes!” You said, panicking.
“I’ve seen you in action this past year, you definitely have what it takes to be a doctor, your work is phenomenal. Hell, If I can pass and graduate so can you.” Jack smiled, placing a hand over yours.
“Thanks, Jacky.” You smiled. That was new nickname that you had coined for Jack, he tried to pretend that he hated it but he secretly loved it.
“Now, tell me the real reason.” Jack said, arching a brow. You sighed, crossing your arms before speaking “I need to find a new place to stay.”
“What happened? Are you okay?” Jack said, his tone conveying worry. “I’m fine. You know I’ve always had problems with my apartment, but this time it’s really bad I can’t take living there anymore. There’s black mould growing, my boiler is constantly broken, and my neighbours have sex so loud that it keeps me up at night.” You rambled.
“I don’t know what to do, It’s not exactly like I can afford anywhere better. Not on student loans.” You groaned, lying your head on table and lightly hitting your head off it.
Jack slides his hand over your forehead, so you weren’t hitting the hard wooden table. “Come live with me.” Jack shrugged.
“What?” You questioned, whipping your head up to look Jack in the eyes. “Be your roommate?” You asked, incredulously.
“What’s wrong with that?” Jack asked, feeling slighty offended. “Nothing! It’s just a big ask, and I wouldn’t want to be a burden.” You shook your head.
“You could never be a burden to me, after all we’re bestfriends so it’s not like you’re a stranger. And besides, I’m not really asking you I’m telling you.” Jack chuckled.
You stared at Jack for a beat, taking in everything that he was saying. “Thank you so much.” You whispered, throwing your arms around his neck. “Anytime.” He smiled, pulling you in tighter. The scent of your hair invaded his nostrils, your scent had always been intoxicating to him.
“I have the room, anyway.” Jack shrugged.
“I know. I have been in your apartment before, Jack.” You giggled, lightly shoving him.
You were grateful that the day that you were set to move in with Jack, he was also not working. Making the move in process less stressful.
Jack drove over to your house and helped you pack the last of your things into boxes. At this point, it was only some clothes and other small things that needed to be packed away so it didn’t take long at all.
You were so glad that Jack could drive, because you did not have the money to hire big moving vans. You were also lucky that Jack drove a truck, so it was big enough for majority of your furniture.
You and Jack figured out which things of yours would be better in his apartment. For example, you both came to the conclusion that your couch was better. Your couch was an olive green three seater that you thrifted where Jacks was a black leather couch with the leather peeling off.
Jack had made a couple dozen trips back and forth between the two apartments but with the last of your stuff packed securely in the trunk you could finally relax.
“God, Am I glad to see the back of that place.” You sighed, relaxing into the leather seats of Jacks truck.
“So am I.” Jack snorted. Jack had been to your apartment a couple times after work and everytime there was always something going on. Everytime, Jack ended up having to fix something when he was over.
Jack pulled up to his apartment building and lifted the last box out of the trunk with you trailing behind him.
“I can’t believe this is my new home.” You smiled as you flopped down onto your couch. “You better get used to it!” Jack quipped, flopping down beside you. You closed your eyes, smiling that you were finally stress free.
You opened your eyes feeling really groggy. The living room was in complete darkness, the TV and lamps weren’t even on.
That is when you realised you fell asleep, you were utterly exhausted.
You felt a pair of strong arms wrapped firmly around your waist. You glanced down and saw Jack lying with the side of his face pressed up against your rib cage.
You smiled and started combing your hand through Jacks soft curls, not wanting to wake him just yet. You were trapped so you couldn’t even get up to turn any lights on.
Jack started stirring under your touch, you knew that he was awake now. He groaned and stretched out, untangling himself from you.
“We fell asleep?” Jack asked, stretching his arms above his head which revealed a sliver of dark hair leading down the way.
You snapped your eyes back up to his and swallowed. “Yeah.” You smiled.
“I need to unpack.” You whined, throwing yourself back on the couch.
“Leave that until the morning.” Jack said softly. “I think we both need to go to bed.” Jack added.
“Agreed.” You sighed. “Let me carry you to your bed.” Jack chuckled. “Jack, No.” You deadpanned. “Come on, you weigh like nothing.” Jack rolled his eyes, you smiled stupidly at that little comment.
“Okay.” You said and outstretched your arms. Jack hooked one arm under your legs and other under your arms. You instinctively held onto the back of his neck as he hiked up so it was more comfortable for him.
Jack kicked open the door to your room and placed you in your bed. He pulled the covers over you as you started to drift into sleep yet again, he placed a light kiss on your forehead and left the room.
“Hey! Dinners in the microwave.” Jack shouted through to you the minute he heard the front door. Today was your last day as a med student, tomorrow you would graduate and officially become a doctor.
You walked into the living room, where Jack was sitting on the couch with his feet kicked up on the coffee table watching TV.
You shrugged off your jacket and flung your bag onto the floor, throwing yourself down onto the couch next to Jack. “What’s up?” Jack asked, as you lay your head on his shoulder.
“I officially finished my neonatal rotation.” You sighed. “Who knew little premature babies could take so much out of you?”
“You don’t realise until you actually work in that department how much little humans depend on you, more than others in the hospital.” Jack sympathised, thinking back to when he did the neonatal rotation and how emotionally taxing it was.
“I think I might miss it, as much as I was stressed out.” You said sadly. “Do you want to work in that department?” Jack asked.
“I thought about it. But I like the ER a lot better.” You nodded.
“You’ll be a doctor by this time tomorrow.” Jack said. “Crazy that I actually survived eight years of this, and all the hard work is paying off tomorrow.” You smiled.
You lined up on the stage, waiting for your name to be called so that you could collect your certificate. You looked out into the crowd and smiled when you saw familiar faces.
Jack, Robby, Isobel, Dr. Adamson, and a very pregnant Jayla (a first year resident like Jack who you had became friends with rather quickly) were all sat together waiting for you to walk across the stage.
Your name got called and you swore that you could hear their cheers above everyone else’s.
You accepted your certificate and walked off the stage in their direction. Jack immediately outstretched his arms that you ran into without hesitation. “You did it, sunshine.” He whispered into your ear.
“Thank you for coming guys.” You smiled gratefully. “We wouldn’t have missed this for the world!” Jayla exclaimed, rounding around to embrace you too.
“I knew you had it in you, there was never a doubt in my mind. You’ll make a phenomenal doctor.” Robby smiled, pulling you into his side and rubbing his hand in your hair messing it up.
“Robby.” You chided, smoothing down your hair. “Leave the girl alone,” Dr. Adamson said. “Congratulations.”
“We’re taking you out! Everyone will try make it as soon as theyre off!” Isobel exclaimed. Isobel had proved to be a great role model and mentor to you over the past two years and even as a friend.
“What is up with you? You’re storming around this house and slamming cabinets?” Jack asked only standing in boxers and with his shirt hanging open, as he looked in the mirror and buttoned up his shirt.
You and Jack had lived together for two years at this point so him walking around the house in only his boxers was normal, you had a bit more dignity than that but he had seen you in your underwear too.
Living with Jack for this amount of time meant that you couldn’t imagine living on your own again, you were scared for the day that you would move out (if that ever came).
There was traces of you all over the apartment, making the home seem more like yours than his. Jack didn’t mind this at all, and actually was grateful that you gave the apartment some personality.
All of your expensive shower products were mixed in with Jacks, your many bottles really stood out against Jacks shampoo and body wash. Where you had various vanilla, coconut, and fruity body washes and hair products it contrasted against Jacks woody, tobacco scents.
Jacks mug cabinet that had previously only been grey mugs and his only colourful mug (which was his favourite one) had become mixed with your patterned and silly mugs. You loved a souvenir shop and you couldn’t resist going into one and buying a mug for tea or coffee.
At the front door, your many types of shoes were thrown lazily onto the shoe rack. You had your work shoes, various types of heels, sneakers, and “dressy shoes”. Jacks shoes were next to yours, in a neat way. Jack only owned work shoes, a pair of running shoes, sneakers for everyday wear, and what you called “funeral” shoes.
The apartment always smelled like pink lemonade and linen from the air freshener you always sprayed first thing in the morning and the diffusers placed around the house.
All of this, made people at work think you were both dating in secret because of how much you had took over and how Jack was happily allowing it. You and Jack still arrived to work together, bickering like you did when you were med students.
Recently, Jack had started bringing around a girl to the house usually at night time. You would hear them having sex through the walls at night which made you extremely grumpy and caused you to miss out on sleep.
That is why you were stomping around the house and slamming cabinets.
That, and the fact your crush on Jack had grown a lot in the past three years. Sure, Jack had hooked up with other girls in the past that you knew about and didn’t care but this girl was different.
She had been coming around more frequently and that you walked out your room this morning to find her sitting at your kitchen table eating your cereal.
“I’m just heavy handed.” You lied, looking around for your watch that you had took off the night before and didn’t know where you put it.
You and Jack were currently getting ready for a night out with some of your friends from work. The venue was a club which wasn’t the place you and your co workers frequented but you all wanted to switch it up.
“That’s not the reason, but okay.” Jack sighed, fiddling with the buttons. “Shut up.” You grumbled, Jack threw you a dirty look.
“So,” You started, staring at Jack as you started tightening your watch around your wrist. “You and Lucy are getting serious then?”
“I wouldn’t say serious, she’s fun to be around.” Jack shrugged as he pulled on his trousers. “What so is this just a casual hookup or the beginning of a relationship?” You bit. God, you couldn’t even contain your jealously anymore, you sounded pathetic.
There was many occasions when you had some free time at the hospital you and Robby would get coffees and all you would do is bitch about Jack and his new rendezvous. Robby, as usual pinched the bridge of his nose when he heard that familiar whine in your voice when you spoke about Jack. But, Robby always offered his own words of wisdom which were usually “Just fuck and get it over with, I’m sick of hearing you whining.”
You also would go around to Jaylas house when she was on maternity leave and do the same thing, but that time use less profanity because you were holding her baby boy!
“Why? Are you jealous.” Jack smirked, he could spot that familiar glint you got in your eye when you were jealous easily. “No!” You exclaimed, turning away from Jack so that he couldn’t see your burning red cheeks.
“Alright, whatever you say.” Jack commented, laughing at your expense. “You’re so annoying.” You said, throwing a cushion at him.
“Cmon, we’ll be late.” Jack smirked, walking in strides ahead of you to the front door.
You walked out to the cab that was waiting out front for the both you with Jack teasing you all the way down to the lobby.
The cab ride to the club was fairly short, you tipped the driver and showed the bouncer your IDs before heading inside. “You’re late!” Robby commented, sliding you over a drink and Jack a beer.
“Someone was being bitchy.” Jack said, you hit him on the arm in retaliation. “Trouble in paradise?” Jayla said, leaning into your ear to whisper. “There is no paradise.” You said, pressing your lips together to surpress a giggle.
The night went by rather quickly, everyone was getting loaded up with alcohol and you were starting to feel that familiar buzz.
As usual, you and Jack got too close for comfort. Anytime you danced, he was right behind you gripping your hips and moving in sync with your body.
Or, when you weren’t dancing you were practically sat on Jacks knee at the booth even though there was more than enough room for you to sit on your own.
Of course, you got the usual quirked brow and knowing glances from your friends but you were too drunk to notice.
“Yeah, see you soon. Okay, bye.” Jack said, snapping his phone shut. “Who was that?” Robby asked, tipping his chin towards Jacks phone, you turned your head to face Jack also curious why he was on the phone in the club.
“Lucy. She’s coming out with us.” Jack smiled. At the mention of Lucys name, you stilled feeling you blood start to boil. The lazy smile on your face dropped and you looked over to Jayla who was already looking at you back with worry, she then turned to face Jack with a murderous glare.
You slid off Jacks knee and stood up abruptly, too fast because Jack had to put his hand around your hips to steady you as you were swaying. You swatted his hands off of you, he looked genuinely hurt.
“You okay?” Isobel asked, voice laced with concern. “I’m going for a smoke.” You announced, storming out of the club.
Once you were outside, you dug around in your bag for your cigarettes and lighter, fumbling to get the lighter to light around the cigarette. Finally, you held the cigarette up to your lips and inhaled before blowing out a steady stream of smoke. Directly into Jacks face.
“What are you doing out here?” You sighed, taking another drag. “I’m coming to check on you.” Jack said. “Why?” You asked. “Because you’ve been weird all night.” Jack said, he was becoming increasingly more frustrated.
Before you could reply, you took yet another drag of the cigarette but it rushed to your brain and you stumbled back a little, feeling dizzy. “Woah,” Jack said, placing a hand on your arm.
“Nic rush.” You slurred, squeezing your eyes shut. “Sit down.” Jack ordered. “Get off me.” You snapped, moving away from his touch.
“Okay. What the fuck is wrong with you?” Jack snapped, folding his arms. “Me?” You exclaimed manically. Jack stared back at you in confusion.
“You. Bringing that Lucy here? Does she need to be around all the fucking time?” You shouted, you seen some people stare at you like you were crazy but you didn’t care.
“Why are you being like this?” Jack asked, his voice rising. Suddenly, you begun to cry which was something you never wanted to happen. “Fuck.” You said, wiping away at your tears furiously.
Jack visibly softened, and stepped closer to you pulling your hands away from your face and holding them in his. “Y/N, sunshine, what’s the matter? Talk to me.” Jack murmered. The familiar nickname made your heart rate spike.
Jack moved you away from the stares of various bystanders, so that you had more privacy. “It hurts to much to see you with her.” You confessed, looking down at the floor.
You couldn’t take the silence anymore so you turned away from Jack, walking a few steps ahead back inside.
Jack grabbed your arm and spun you around and planted a firm kiss onto your lips. You were surprised at first, but you immediately started to kiss him back more ferociously, letting your hands wander up into his hair while Jacks hands were cupping your cheeks.
“You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to do that.” Jack groaned, you grinned like at idiot at his confession.
“Enlighten me.” You grinned, planting a sneaky kiss on his lips.
“Your first day. That big dopey smile of yours captured my heart immediately, and don’t even get me started on those pink sneakers. I knew from that moment you were a calm, breath of fresh air from the dark chaos.” Jack rambled.
“Cheesy.” You joked, rubbing your hand up and down his arm.
“And, the moment I knew I loved you was when you were rambling about your awful living situation. That’s when I realised all I’ve ever wanted to do was protect you and keep you safe from all the scary shit.” Jack smiled.
“You love me?” You said, your voice catching at his words. “Duh, Idiot.” Jack joked, rolling his eyes at you. “I love you too. Even though you annoy me everyday, I couldn’t imagine a life without you.” You grinned, going up on your tiptoes to kiss Jack again.
“Let’s get out of here.” Jack said suggestively.
“Y/N? Are you in here?” Jayla asked as she stepped into the bathroom.
“Yeah.” You said weakly, wiping your mouth with the back of your hand.
You were currently in the bathroom of the hospital, throwing your guts up into the toilet. You had been as sick as a dog for the past week or two, with Jack by your side trying to help you.
“Are you okay?” Jayla said, waiting outside the cubicle you were in.
“Just a bit sick.” You said, stepping out the cubicle to the sink.
“It’s been what two weeks and you’re still sick, you don’t suspect anything else?” Jayla questioned, cocking her brow at you.
“No why would I?” You said, furrowing your brows. “The winters here are harsh and this surgical elective I for some reason decided to take, are kicking my ass.”
“This whole situation you’re in,” Jayla paused, pointing a finger and waving at you. “Is very familiar to me.”
It dawned on you what Jayla meant and your shoulders slumped a little. “I’m not pregnant.” You scoffed. “I can smell that you’re pregnant from a mile away.” Jayla laughed.
“Shut up.” You groaned, pinching the bridge of your nose.
“Buy a test later.” Jayla said. “It’s New Year’s eve, no where will be open later.” You said, making up excuses.
“Hello? You are in a hospital.” Jayla laughed. “Shush, I’ll do it in my own time.” You grumbled, the reality that pregnancy could very much be a possibility dawning on you.
Ever since that confession at the night club, you and Jack could not stay away from eachother. And since you were in a sex haze constantly, sometimes Jack forgot a condom.
“Anyways, we need you out here. GSW rolling in, five minutes away,” Jayla said. “Let’s go, momma.”
“Gross.” You faked gagged.
“You are being incredibly weird right now.” Jack commented, looking over at you sitting at the furthest part of couch.
“The smell is making me feel nauseous.” You said, glancing down at Jacks bowl of spaghetti. “You love spaghetti.” Jack said, feeling utterly confused.
You had an aversion to most things as of late, and the smell of cooking and most food made you feel sick.
You tested earlier in the week and Jayla was right, you were infant pregnant. You had tested everyday since then and the two pink lines still showed.
You hadn’t told Jack yet, because you didn’t know how to.
You turned your attention back to the TV but you weren’t really paying attention to it as a million thoughts rushed through your head at once.
“Sweetheart, you can tell me anything.” Jack said, his voice softened as he scooted closer to you.
You let out a sigh before speaking. “I’m pregnant.”
The silence was loud and Jack had went as white as a sheet, there was no emotion on his face which was making you increasingly more worried.
“Should I get a BP reading on you right now?” You joked, trying to take the heaviness out of the air.
“Are you sure?” Jack asked. “I’ve tested everyday.” You replied.
“We’re going to have a baby.” Jack said, still trying to process the information. You nodded.
“I mean, it’s up to you it’s your body,” Jack jumped in. “I want to keep it.” You said with the most sureness you’ve felt this whole time.
“We’re going to have a baby.” Jack repeated but this time with the biggest grin on his face. “We are.” You smiled softly.
Jack pulled you into his arms and hugged you, gripping onto you.
“I can’t believe it.” You said, you hand instinctively travelling down to your stomach. There wasn’t even a bump there yet.
“Don’t get me wrong it’ll be hard having a baby this early into our residency, but we’ll make it work.” Jack nodded. “Of course, we always do.” You agreed.
“A little Abbot offspring.” Jack laughed. “Ew.” You said, scrunching up your face.
“Of course it was just our luck to get pregnant the first time we have sex.” You giggled, adding the dates in your head. “How do you know it’s from the first time?” Jack questioned.
“It adds up. I should be about five weeks right now.” You said. “Which means she’ll be born in August.” Jack nodded.
“She?” You smiled amused. “Just a hunch.” Jack smiled.
You were now 16 weeks along and not told anyone at the hospital yet except from Jayla, who clocked you immediately.
You were currently stood at the admit desk looking over your charts from the day and writing down any notes, at the same time you were also eating a chocolate bar.
“That’s like your third bar in the space of a half hour,” Robby commented, looking over his glasses at you. “Fourth, actually,” You corrected. “And i’m hungry!”
“What are you, pregnant?” Robby joked. You froze at his joke and started chewing more slowly, looking at Robby with wide eyes before snapping out of it and laughing.
“No!” You scoffed, rather unconvincingly. “Oh my god, you are!” Robby exclaimed, following around after you as you tried to escape from him.
“Are not!” You lied. “Are too!” Robby exclaimed, stepping infront of you to look at your face.
“Keep your mouth shut.” You warned, wagging a finger in his face. “Congratulations!” Robby whispered, embracing you in a quick hug.
“Thanks, Robby.” You said, unable to contain the smile on your face. “I can’t believe Jack never told me.” Robby said.
“To be fair, I told him I’d cut his balls off if he told anyone.” You shrugged, Robby widened his eyes. “Cold.” He said.
You and Jack were in a baby shop in the town shopping for essentials for the baby, you were halfway through the second trimester and starting to panic that you didn’t have anything.
“Shopping for things would be so much easier if we knew the gender.” Jack huffed. You didn’t want to find out yet as you were quite old fashioned that way, admittedly it did make shopping that little bit harder as it was difficult to find cute gender neutral clothes.
“There is few surprises left in life, let this be one of them, Jack.” You snorted, browsing through the wracks of newborn clothes.
“What colour are we going to do for their nursery wall since we can’t do blue or pink yet, yellow?” Jack asked. “I hate yellow,” You said. “Sage green is a good medium.”
Jack nodded thoughtfully liking your idea and envisioning the baby’s room in his head clearly.
“I’ve got a list of everything we need baby essentials wise that isn’t clothes.” You said, shoving your list into his hands. “This is…a lot of things to buy right now.” Jack said, looking at what seemed like the never ending list.
“I need to be prepared.” You exclaimed. “Okay, Okay.” Jack said, holding his hands up in defense.
You and Jack walked around the store, making note on any furniture that piqued your interest.
“Why don’t we choose a boy and girl outfit for our baby’s coming home outfit?” You suggested, Jack nodded along.
You looked through the racks and found the perfect outfits.
You and Jack picked out a matching navy blue trousers and button up sweater seat with beige booties for a boy. And, a light pink pointelle romper with floral booties for a girl.
“They will be the coolest Abbot around.” Jack smiled, paying for the outfits.
It was the hottest day of the full year, the heatwave of July officially reaching its peak. This summer so far had been the hottest summer recorded since the nineties.
You were extremely pregnant, sweaty, grumpy, and utterly exhausted. You couldn’t seem to muster a smile on your face the entire day as there was sweat in every crevice of your body and the baby was constantly squirming and kicking you.
This baby had already proved to be a troublemaker and was sure to give you and Jack a run for your money when they got older.
Unfortunately, you were working in the hospital today. One of your last few shifts before officially going on maternity leave next week.
You were working on a stabbing victim in one of the trauma rooms alongside Isobel and Robby. Jack had just finished his shift when your shift started, he started taking more night shifts lately which you hated when you needed him at night.
Suddenly, you felt a sharp pain in your stomach which had you wincing out loud. “You okay?” Isobel asked, glancing over at you with worry. You nodded wordlessly, turning all your attention over to the patient.
You were terrified that you were going into labour now, silently praying that these were just Braxton Hicks.
However, another contraction hit and you grit your teeth. They started coming more frequently which was increasing your worry.
“Your contractions are seven minutes apart.” Isobel whispered so that no one else could hear, you snapped your head up. “We’ve you this.” Isobel smiled kindly, you nodded and stepped out.
You walked over to the nurses station where Jayla was sitting and plopped yourself next to her. You pretended to catch up on some charting to distract yourself, after all people are in labour for hours even days!
“You’re grunting.” Jayla commented, assessing you. “I’m kind of in labour, I think?” You tried to joke. “Oh my fucking god? We need to get you into a room!” Jayla panicked, waking around to your side to help you up off the chair.
“I just need to use the bathroom right now.” You said trying to prolong changing into a hospital gown and having this baby for as long as possible.
You walked into the toilet cubicle but before you could close the door, Jayla followed you and stood at the door.
Right as you were about to make some comment like you didn’t need her help your water broke. You and Jayla stared wide eyed at eachother.
“That’s it, we’re getting you into a room.” Jayla said, placing a hand on your back and taking you into one of the rooms.
Jayla ushered Isobel and by extension Robby into the room. “Let me just check to see how dialated you are.” Isobel smiled as you she checked you.
Isobel smile dropped slightly as she glanced at Robby and Jayla and snapped off her gloves. “Someone page Abbot a 911.” Isobel said calmly, Robby nodded paging Jack and also pulling out his cellphone to phone Jack aswell.
“What’s wrong?” You panicked, your heart monitor beeping more as your heart rate sky rocketed. “This baby is on its way, like now.” Isobel said.
“Oh god.” You cried throwing your head back against the bed.
“I’m not giving birth in the ER!” You exclaimed, horrified that all your coworkers would hear your screams soon and crowd outside the door.
“It’s looking like you are.” Jayla said sympathetically as she also checked you.
“Robby, please page my OB!” You shouted as your barked orders at Robby. “I’ve paged her and Jack a million times no one is responding.” Robby said biting his lip.
“Fuck.” You cried as another contraction hit, making you feel the urge to push. “Don’t push yet!” Jayla exclaimed as you wriggled around on the bed uncomfortably.
“Abbot. Get your fucking ass down here.” Robby barked down the phone to Jacks voicemail. “Try our machine.” You grumbled.
Robby shouted down you and Jacks machine and finally Jack picked up, groggy from sleep but that sleepiness was out of his voice as soon as he heard the situation.
Robby slid his hand in yours, opting to be your birth partner until Jack got there. “Thank you.” You said, gritting your teeth as Isobel ordered you to push. “This is officially the start of my Uncle Robby duties.” Robby shrugged, you chuckled grateful for the distraction.
You were worried that Jack wouldn’t get here in time but you couldn’t hold in this baby anymore.
“I’m here sweetheart!” Jack exclaimed, bursting through the doors and rounding to your side as he held onto your other hand. “Thank fuck!” You screamed as you pushed.
You squeezed both Jack and Robby’s hands tightly, sure that you were bound to break a bone but none of them commented on it.
“The baby’s not due until August.” You cried. “I know, baby. They’re just eager to see their parents.” Jack reassured you, placing a kiss on your forehead.
After what seemed like forever of pushing and screaming, a baby’s scream ripped through the room.
“It’s a girl!” Isobel announced.
“You were right.” You said to Jack, feeling a heavy weight lifted off your shoulders that she was okay.
“She’s got a good set of lungs on her for being a 35 weeker.” Jayla smiled as Jack cut the cord.
Robby wrapped the baby in a blanket and placed her on your chest with Jack towering over the two of you.
Harlow Grace Abbot was born on July 16th 2004, exactly 4 years since your first day at the hospital and your first day meeting Jack.
“I bet you were shocked to find out I have kids too.” Jack smirked as Javadi and Dennis trailed behind him and you.
“You are so mysterious,” Javadi said in awe. “Oh don’t, you’ll inflate his already massive ego.” You joked.
You were officially Javadis new favourite doctor in the ER and she had only known you five minutes.
“Jack and I have two daughters. Harlow who was born in 2004 and Isla who was born in 2007.” You smiled, thinking back to those days when the girls were only little.
“Harlow is actually a second year med student, she will hopefully be joining us next year.” Jack said proudly.
“Another nepo baby.” Javadi joked. “You won’t be alone in that anymore.” You said softly.
“Don’t have babies early into your residency,” Jack said as a warning. “At least wait until you’re an attending.” You commented.
“No kids for me just yet.” Javadi laughed. “So how did you guys get together?” Dennis asked.
You gave the two a quick summery of how you and Jack started dating.
“You could meet your future partner in this hospital like I did.” You smiled, looking affectionately over at Jack who was speaking to Robby.
You caught Javadis eye wander over to Matteo, you gave her a knowing look.
