You were on the elevator down to the ED from the paediatrics department, you had been put on a pedes rotation for a couple months and then you would be back down in The Pitt after that. You discovered that you actually enjoyed being with babies and kids and that you might consider switching to that department, but often in the quietness you found yourself missing the chaos of the ED and seeing Jack all the time.
You had been paged to come downstairs to see baby Jane Doe. The elevator pinged and you got out, already being swept up in the Fourth of July madness. “I guess emergencies don’t stop for the holidays, huh.” You questioned, walking up to the nurses station.
“Princess of the Pitt!” Dana exclaimed and wrapped you in a hug. “Former.” You corrected the old nickname, warming your heart. “Still the princess in all of our hearts.” Dana smiled.
The nickname had come around for you after your co-workers noticed how put together you looked all the time, and how you always turned the heads of patients and even some of the people you worked with. Notably, Jack.
You always had freshly trimmed healthy hair, going to appointments every two weeks. You used high end shampoos and hair treatments to maintain the silky smooth look your hair always had. Your hair was always tied back into a perfect ponytail, not one hair out place. And, you always smelled divine with various designer perfumes on rotation.
Everyone wondered how you afforded this lifestyle, well everyone but Mel. You had moved in with Mel not long after you met, You needed somewhere to stay that was close by to the hospital and she just so happened to have an unoccupied spare room.
You couldn’t exactly hide the fact that Jack was the one that was funding this lifestyle, especially when he always stopped by the house and stayed some nights. Mel and Jack got along great outside of work, Mel even going out of her way to invite him over for dinner on a day that you all weren’t working, which was very rare.
Jack bought you everything that you wanted or needed to maintain your appearance. You didn’t even need to ask sometimes, he transferred the money to your account without a word. He was responsible for your hair appointments, designer perfumes and clothes, everything.
“How can Abbot afford to pay for your hair, shopping addiction and many other things?” Mel asked one night the two of you were curled up on the couch after a particularly stressful shift, and Jack had sent you money for You and Mel to get food.
“It’s that attending salary,” You shrugged. “I do feel bad, I feel like I’m taking his hard earned money.” You said, chewing on your lip guilty.
“Why? If he wants to spoil you, good for him!I think he quite enjoys spoiling you actually.” Mel smiled. “Thank you, Melly. Your wisdom always picks me up.” You grinned as you shoved some food into your mouth, starving as per.
It was safe to say that you and Mel got along straight away because you understood each other, she was usually the one who stopped your overthinking and you helped Mel regulate. You were her safe space, outside of Langdon.
“What’s brought you down here?” Cassie asked, popping up from behind you snapping you out of your thoughts.
“Robby wanted me to come down and look at Baby Jane Doe. He wants my opinion.” You said simply. “I mean who throws out a perfectly good baby?!” Dana said in outrage, throwing her hands up. “That is what I am here to find out!” You said, running to find the room she was in.
You located the room and saw Robby and Mohan inside. “Hi!” You beamed, making your way towards the baby. “We just needed your opinion on her, It doesn’t hurt to get a second opinion.” Samira greeted you.
“No it doesn’t.” You agreed, pressing your stethoscope against the baby’s belly. “Okay little miss, I am just going to check you over!” You cooed.
Samira left the room, saying that she had a patient to get to so now it was just you and Robby in the room.
“I can’t hear or see anything abnormal. She’s healthy!” You said confirming what Robby already knew. “Thank god.” Robby muttered, letting the baby wrap her whole fist around Robby’s finger.
“You know, she needs an emergency placement. Fancy being thought of for kinship adoption?” Robby probed, meeting your eyes. It was a very tempting offer, but you couldn’t.
“Ja— Mel would kill me.” You said trying to conceal your almost slip up but Robby caught it. “Jack. Huh?” He smirked. You had been at Jack's place more frequently lately, waiting for him when he got back from his night shift.
“Don’t start.” You groaned. “My lips are sealed.” Robby chuckled.
“Speaking of Jack, have you seen him yet?” You asked, already missing Jack even though you had kissed him goodbye this morning. “He had to come in to take someone to emergency surgery earlier. He’s either still in surgery or napping in one of the on call rooms.” Robby said. “If you find him, wake him up.” Robby said, knowing that you were going to find him anyway.
“Will do, Boss.” You smirked. “Not anymore!” Robby exclaimed and left the room.
You looked down at your watch, it was 6:46pm. Jack was due to start his shift and you were due to leave yours in fourteen minutes. You swaddled the baby back up and left her room in search of him.
“Hey!” Trinity said, stopping you in your tracks. “Hi! How’s it going?” You enquired looking curiously down at Trinity doing charting. “This charting is making me want to fucking kill myself, I can’t wait to get out of here.” Trinity grumbled and you nodded in sympathy.
“What are you wearing?” Trinity asked, sniffing the air around you. “Oh! It’s some Dior perfume, I forgot the name.” You smiled. One thing about you, is that you always smelled good even after being covered in god knows what fluids all day.
“How can you afford that on our salary?” Trinity asked incredulously. “You always smell delectable.” She whined.
“I have my ways,” You winked, leaving Trinity dumbfounded. “Gotta run!”
You bolted off in the direction of the on-call rooms and gently opened each of them, until you found Jack in one of them.
He was already awake and shirtless, he sat up and put his scrub top back on. “Hey, baby.” You beamed, walking over to Jack when he patted his lap for you to sit on.
“Hi, princess.” Jack grinned and pulled you in for a quick kiss. “Time for your shift.” You said in a low voice, both of you not making a move. “I’ve been hyping myself up for it, for the past ten minutes.” Jack confessed.
“You and the ‘Night Crawlers’ as you so affectionately call your team will do great, sometimes I’m jealous at how relaxed the night shift seems.” You pouted. “I could ask for you to get put on night shift rotation!” Jack said excitedly.
“As much as I would love to be with you guys, I value my sanity and sleep.” You said and Jack whined again. “Speaking of, I’ve got to run to finish the last couple minutes of my shift.” You said, peeling yourself off Jack's lap.
“See you back at home, baby.” Jack smiled, placing a comforting hand on the small of your back as you stood up. You didn’t bother to correct Jack on how he called his apartment your home. You smiled like a little child all the way back up to the pedes floor.
You didn’t get off at seven like you intended as you had suddenly become super busy, getting swept into a case with a sick newborn and trying to figure out what was wrong with him. It was now nine and you were taking the familiar trip back down to the ED so that you could leave.
“Y/N!” Trinity said, beckoning you over once she saw you. “What’s up?” You asked, sitting on a stool next to Mel and Trinity setting your bag on the floor.
“We’re going for drinks and karaoke after we finish up this last little bit of charting. Are you coming?” Trinity asked, you darted your eyes between her and Mel feeling excited and shocked that Mel had been convinced to come out. “Well we were actually going up to the roof first to watch the fireworks.” Mel cut in.
“Count me in!” You smiled and Trinity nodded. “I can’t believe you convinced Mel to come out with us, I’ve been begging her for months.” You said.
“It didn’t take that much convincing actually.” Trinity corrected. “It’s been a shift from hell.” Mel huffed and you nodded solemnly. “No point in me waiting up on the roof alone, I’ll keep you company.” You announced.
“Doctor Y/N!” Jack called and you whipped your head around to his direction fast, something about his tone was odd and panicky which was unusual. You didn’t like it in the slightest.
“Yeah?” You questioned. “You gotta come in here. Quick.” He exclaimed and went back into the room. You quickly shrugged off your zipper and ran into the room.
You walked into the room to be met with a heavily pregnant woman seizing on the table. “We’re just about to do a emergency c section, I need you over beside Mckay to help baby.” Jack ordered, you obeyed and stood beside the incubator.
Jack had gone in with the scalpel and preformed the c-section, getting the baby out and handing her over to you. The baby didn’t come out crying and was blue, you, Mckay and Shen got to working on her straight away.
“Come on, little one.” You muttered, blowing into her mouth to clear her airway. “We need you to get an eight.” You whispered, hoping desperately that she would pull through. Her APGAR scale was currently sitting at a seven.
The baby let out a small wail that had you and everyone in the room letting out a sigh of relief. “Good work everyone.” Robby commented and left the room. Jack was still working on the mother who was still unconscious.
“You can go, we got this.” Jack said, his eyes softening over his mask. See you at home, you thought. “Goodnight, everyone.” You said to the room.
You ripped off your protective vests and snapped your gloves off, throwing them in the trash. “That was intense. Let’s go, please.” You pleaded, shrugging your zipper back on and slinging your bag over your shoulder.
After watching the fireworks with everyone else, you, Mel, and Trinity walked into the bar next to the hospital. Utterly exhausted and bleary eyed, but that drink was calling your name.
You successfully coaxed Mel into karaoke, promising her that no one would even remember by the time you walked off the stage. “How about a Megan Thee Stallion song! Big Ole Freak?” Mel exclaimed excitedly brainstorming ideas for songs. You and Trinity gave each other a look at Mel’s suggestion.
“I love you, Melly but we can’t keep up with her flow. Unless you want to go up on stage yourself, be our guest.” You said sarcastically, Mel profusely shook her head, shying away. “How about, You Oughta Know by Alanis Morrisette?” You suggested.
“Fuck Yes!” Trinity shouted and you smiled. “I love that song!” Mel smiled. “And we can all relate to it in some way, so it’s perfect.” You shrugged, Trinity nodded in agreement but Mel looked at you confused. “You’ll understand what I mean eventually.” You said to Mel.
You put your song and names into the system and disappeared to go get drinks. It would certainly take some liquid courage to get you through this. You gulped down your drinks one after one, feeling the effects of the alcohol hitting you quickly.
Mel seemed composed on the outside, but you had known her long enough that you knew what type of drunk she was. Mel was always funny and quite forward when drunk, something you never would have expected. Trinity was Trinity, she was jolly and was very affectionate. Telling you that she loves you.
The karaoke host called up your names to come and sing. When the beat kicked in, it was like you all transformed into this other version of yourselves. An alter ego who was bitter and angry took over, you all sang your heart outs. Mel even letting her braid loose and head banging back and forth.
When you were done, everyone in the bar clapped for you and you couldn’t help the small blush that creeped up onto your already flushed cheeks. “I think that healed something in me.” Trinity announced, referring to her and Garcia's tumultuous relationship. “Me too!” You agreed, even though you were in a happy relationship with Jack. “Yeah….Same.” Mel nodded. “I told you, you’d get it.”
You all stumbled back to your table on unsteady legs, plopping back down onto the soft cushion, sipping your drinks sweetly and like there was no tomorrow. Trinity was currently drowning her sorrows and talking sadly about her and Garcias relationship. “You just need to be forward and ask her what she wants from you.” You slurred. “Sex.” Mel said, rolling her eyes, like it was the most obvious answer.
“Shush, I mean you lay down what you want and maybe she will come around. I mean that’s what I did with Jack and—.” You blabbed, not even realising what you said. “What do you mean, with Jack.” Trinity cut in, straightening in her seat now becoming interested. Mel widened her eyes at you, you slapped your hand over your mouth and your slip up.
“I—.” You began to say but couldn’t find the words, you wanted the ground to open up and swallow you whole right there and then. “Who do you think buys her all of those expensive things.” Mel shrugged, slurping lazily at her drink. Trinity darted her eyes between the two of you, meanwhile you sat with your head in your hands. “Mel!” You exclaimed.
“I fucking knew it!” Trinity exclaimed, smiling gleefully. “You did not.” You rolled your eyes. “Whitaker owes me ten bucks.” Trinity said, a smug expression on her face. “You opened a betting pool on my relationship?” You asked. “Why is this so surprising,” Trinity snickered.
You grumbled and flung yourself back against your seat. “But good for you girl, bagging an attending. Who is very attractive and is willing to spoil you.” Trinity said, a look of pride on her face. “Thanks.” You smiled. “That means a lot coming from a lesbian.” Mel stated, Trinity nodded.
You sat there for a while longer, you opened up more on your relationship with Jack and Trinity nodded along in approval.
You all left the bar, stumbling into eachother as you walked along the streets of Pittsburgh late at night, the fireworks from the Fourth of July beginning to come to an end. You grabbed pizza from a small shop, each of you taking a slice. Talking with your mouths full, as you recounted the events of the day.
“Are you coming back home tonight?” Mel asked. “I’m going to Jacks tonight.” You said, smiling sadly. “I miss you.” Mel whined. “Me too! I’ll be home tomorrow and then we’ll do something seeing as we’re both off.” You smiled and Mel nodded.
Jack's house, thankfully, was just around the block from you and Mel's shared apartment so it wasn’t that far of a walk at all.
You said your goodbyes to Trinity and Mel and walked to Jack's house, fumbling around in your bag for a set of keys he cut specifically for you.
You woke up the next morning, with the bright July sun streaming in through the window and feeling sticky with sweat. You looked down and saw Jack lying with his head burrowed in between your boobs, and his arms gripped tightly around your waist. He wasn’t wearing a shirt and you were wearing minimal clothes yourself, this meant that you stuck to eachother.
You peeled yourself off, positive that you would melt into him due to this heatwave. Jack groaned a little in annoyance as you pulled away, a sound you hated.
“Morning, princess.” Jack said sleepily, his eyes still closed. “I’m sorry to wake you.” You said apologetically. “Nah you didn’t, I just got in a little bit ago.” Jack said sitting up straighter in bed.
“I’m gonna take you shopping later on. Spoil you.” Jack stated, a shit eating grin spread across your lips. “Where?”
“Surprise.” Jack smiled, flopping back down onto the bed. “Sleep for a little, you’ve been working all night.” You frowned, leaning down and placing a gentle kiss on his lips. Jack took your advice without a word and squished his face back into the pillow, a little quirk he had to get him to sleep.
Like clockwork, a few hours later around Noon, Jack was dressed and padded into the living room. You were laying with every part of your body pressing into the couch, desperately trying to use to coldness of the leather to cool you down.
“Ready to go?” Jack questioned. You nodded and sprung up, desperate to get out of the house.
Jack drove the two of you to the closest shopping mall, the one where all of the actually good stores where. “Victorias Secret, baby?” Jack asked and you nodded excitedly.
“Buy whatever you want.” Jack said and let you guide him around the store. You picked up various matching bra and underwear sets, showing him the ones you like, Jack always nodded in approval knowing you would look good in any of them.
“Which one?” You asked, holding up two lingerie sets for Jack to choose from. “You pick, baby. You’ve got free reign on my credit card.” Jack chuckled.
“You’re the one that has to tear it off of me.”You whispered in his ear, sending shockwaves up his spine. You saw Jack straighten and eye the two sets intensely. “The bubblegum pink one.” Jack said eagerly.
“Great choice, Jack.” You smirked and flung it in your basket.
Once you paid at Victoria’s Secret, Jack took you to some other stores before you had to stop him. Fearing that he would go bankrupt.
“I just like spoiling you.” Jack pouted. “I know, baby but I don’t want you going into debt on my behalf.” You said honestly, Jack bent down and stole a kiss on your lips.
“Can you take me back to Mel’s? She misses me.” You explained. “Of course, sweetheart. You don’t need to explain to me.” He smiled sweetly.
“I think we’re going to order something and watch Dirty Dancing.” You said, thinking about your perfect night already. “I thought that was our thing.” Jack said. “Our thing is watching Grease and trying to dance just like Sandy and Johnny.” You chuckled.
“We’re pretty good at it.” Jack nodded, thinking back to all of the times you both recreated the scenes in his living room.
You eventually fell into a comfortable silence as he drove you to Mel’s apartment, you had a small permanent smile on your face as you looked out the window. Everything in your life was falling into place.
“You know we’re like Johnny and Baby in real life.” Jack stated, you looked at him and giggled. “How?”
“Older man and younger woman. And, I would totally pull you into my arms infront of your parents and whisk you away to dance.” Jack chuckled. “Would you now?” You said in amusement.
“Would you crawl to me and sing Love is Strange?” You asked. “Oh, yeah!” Jack laughed. You burst out laughing, the hypothetical scene unfolding in your head.
