Like Akai trust Camel. He thinks Camel has some of the best driving skills. And he also recognizes Camel's guilt for blowing his meeting with Gin and his cover and endangering Akemi. And he's not above using him for it. And here it comes out perfectly.

Here we have Kir who's cover could be blown by Camel being exposed. And he picks Kir who's CIA not FBI over Camel. Even though it's a bet on his part and even though he fully thinks he still can rescue Camel, he picks Kir's safety over Camel.

He has multiple reasons to do so. First Kir is still undercover and he has her partially betraying loyalties and working for him. So part of it is prioritizing any information he can get about the Organization out of her. Another part is she's undercover where he used to be, where he still wishes he could be. He wants his teeth in their flesh and if he can't have it he'll have someone else have it. And to top it all off? Even though he's fine using Camel and trusts Camel and Camel's guilt, he probably still is not happy with him somewhat (bad phrasing but my brain is refusing to feed me the words I want). Camel directly blew his cover, and indirectly killed Akemi. Even if Akai mostly blames himself for Akemi's death the fault in his cover being blown with nothing to show for it is Camel's. He cannot appreciate or like him for that.

falls asleep on the couch: Usually Okiya. Rena’s more liable to fall asleep in her parked car after following a particularly long story.

makes friends with the neighbors: Okiya’s out with freshly-cooked welcome food before the moving guys have even left. They get food too.

is the adventurous eater: Rena’s always up to try whatever new recipe Okiya’s making, but she also often eats with people she’s interviewing or whose story she’s covering to build up some trust.

hogs the covers at night: Okiya is a relentless blanket hog, mainly because he moves about a lot in his sleep and tends to tangle the blankets up around himself.

forgets to do the dishes: Rena will often leave breakfast or lunch dishes when she’s rushing out the door to a story, but Okiya doesn’t mind because she doesn’t do them right anyway, and absolutely everything in this man’s kitchen will be done right

tries to surprise their partner more often: Whenever she travels to cover a story, Rena tries to bring back the absolute weirdest souvenir she can lay hands on just to see if she can startle a reaction out of Okiya. Results are rare but spectacular.

leaves dirty laundry on the floor: Okay, this is the one that Okiya’s guilty of a LOT. Rena never lets her suits be any less than perfectly pressed, but Okiya’s sweaters wound up getting abandoned anywhere and everywhere.

stays up til 2 AM reading: Okiya will be up for days straight if he gets his nose into an interesting enough book, keeping his nose in it night and day until he’s done, even while cooking.

sings in the shower: More like loudly mocks news reporters she doesn’t like while imitating their voices and then retelling the story the way she’d report it.

takes the selfies: Rena, often without Okiya noticing at all that he’s in them.

plans date night: Okiya usually makes the plans and Rena tests them to their limit

that's why akai is revealed to not have killed scotch - scotch killed himself. that's why ethan hondou killed himself even if the org believed kir did it. that's why kir only fake-killed akai. that's why in m26 we see kir hesitated and then gin came up and shoot the actually shot. that's why furuya faked the death in m22. because the characters are on "the good side" doesn't kill people on screen. or off-screen. at least, we won't ever get something concrete.

kir's hesitation in m26 is so very ...... like gin absolutely saw it but he let it go. which is really wild, but again not from a doylist perspective. just like movie only characters from the org who finds out shinichi = conan had to die so they don't disrupt the main plot, important main cast can't die in movie either. so kir can't be killed - so gin has to just let the thing go. but also we can't see kir killing, so gin had to be the one to fire the shot. it all makes sense from an external point of view but when we get watsonian about it this becomes very ..... hmmmmm ....

of course there are explanations i can make up. some possibly relying on an element of misogyny (on gin's part), something about women hesitating at the last minute because getting soft-hearted or whatever, that's a flaw but does not mean betrayal, etc. or maybe gin just have a soft spot for kir. which is also something that seems to be the case in canon.

gin did go out of his way to rescue kir after she got captured by the fbi. gin did agree to not kill all the people at beika hospital because kir asked him not to. like, it's wild but it's not unprecedented. gin does have a soft spot for kir for some reason.

it would actually explain why gin believed that one call from kir could get akai coming. it's always slightly bothered me that gin would believe akai could really come, be so easily lured, to not see that this might be a trap. but one explanation is because gin himself has a soft spot for kir, he assumed akai does, too, because akai and gin have this .... same wavelength thing going on. so gin thinks if he himself has a soft spot for kir, it's understandable that akai does, too.

Chianti and Korn are tense but trying to see if he's an actual traitor, Vodka is adamant he's innocent, Vermouth spends the whole time amused to hell, and Kir gets to be on the other end of the gun and scary AF for once. Bonus points include everyone getting a new dosage of fear and Respect for Kir when she tells Gin straight to his face that if he was a traitor she'd kill him herself with a smile and actually holds a gun on him (maybe even shoots him in the shoulder or something?) without being killed for it later, Vermouth amused and torn between wanting to have Gin be labeled a traitor because of what he did to her Cool Guy and Angel and helping prove he's loyal for whatever other motive, Vodka being seen as Dangerous again, and Rum being the main one to suspect Gin but also everyone else low-key thinking he's either a traitor or cursed.

In BO Boss Conan AU. Imagine the NOCs like Kir and Bourbon and Akai trying to explain to their superiors that the boss of the organization is a six year old.

Bourbon: No he's like legit tiny! He's freaking six or something! I could punt him!

Kir: I'm in shock too but if I see you try to punt a child, evil mastermind or not, I will absolutely shoot you.
