By the way, has anyone ever wondered why Quasimodo is white with red hair and blue-green eyes when neither of his parents share these traits?
Well, the answer is simple. According to the writers of the film, Tab Murphy and Irene Mecchi, these two are NOT Quasimodo’s real parents.
Incidentally, the gypsy woman carrying Quasi at the beginning of the film was actually the midwife and good friend of Quasi’s birth mother, a white Frenchwoman. Unfortunately, she died giving birth to Quasi, so the gypsy woman adopted him as her own.
This means the woman gave her life for a child that wasn’t even truly hers. She could have abandoned him and saved herself, but she loved him too much. A child that, back in the day, many parents would have “mercy killed” due to his deformities, she took in and died protecting.
Also according to the writers, this is why Quasi and Esmeralda get along so well, and why he becomes so protective of her. They’re both orphans who lost everything to baseless prejudice. Esmeralda embodies the selfless gypsy woman who loved Quasi for who he was, and Quasi embodies how Esmeralda feels inside; ugly and unwanted just because she’s different.
To each other, they both represent the little bit of kindness they both needed in a world that was otherwise incredibly dark and cruel. Through Esmeralda, Quasi learns that people aren’t as horrible as he’s been raised to believe. He ends up seeing the beauty in the world around him and decides to leave the bell tower with his head held high. Through Quasimodo, Esmeralda learns that not everyone around her is corrupt. After years of isolation, loneliness, and reticence, she finds in Quasimodo a friend whom she can finally trust.
