Little bit of research from Lectures: Post Modernism and Conceptualism
Image sourced from: https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/lighting/table-lamps/tahiti-lamp-ettore-sottsass-memphis/id-f_674793/
Post-Modernism
In Fridayās lecture we looked at post-modernism design, a response to modernism and a controversial art movement from 1970 to 1990. It brought about news ideas of freedom in design and consisted of bright bold colours, asymmetry, pattern and geometric shapes as key elements and principles. It especially focused on āform over functionā.
The Memphis group were a group of Italian designers and architects that made a series of highly influential products in the 1980ās, led by Ettore Sottass. The Memphis style lamp above, as an example of a product with form over function, focusing more on the design, colour and patterns rather than the functionality of the lamp itself.
After looking further into post-modernist designs, I realised that a lot of the designs I had made were heavily influenced by this period, which is really cool and interesting to see. I really admire the use of bold colours and geometric shapes in order to make a really effective design.

Conceptualism
The concept is more important that the artwork itself
We also shortly looked at conceptualism in the lecture. Conceptualism is considered to be extremely important in contemporary artworks and design, where the meaning and intention behind the artwork or design is more important that the artwork itself.
An example of this being Robert Rauschenbergās āThis Is a Portrait of Iris Clert If I Say So, 1961ā. A plain telegram with the phrase āIris Clert 28 Ruedusthonore Parisā, with no actual portrait of Iris Clert.
The whole idea of conceptualism is really fascinating as we become interested in the artists/designers intention behind their work, rather than the work itself.

ASK ME ANYTHING - Part 2
Once my creative got back to me I quickly cut down the questions from the original 11 down to the 5 required. Iām not throwing my creative under the bus, but I was hoping for longer responses, therefore making a little more content filled booklet. However the responses were pretty small, and instead I decided to embrace the smallness and made a tiny 6cmx6cm booklet, that I titled in my head, āA VERY small look into Justin Mallers lifeā, however the title was a bit too large to fit onto the booklet. I also printed my zine from week 11ā²s workshop and wrote some annotations as to how to fix it. This would have been my backup if the booklet I had created didnāt pan out how I want. If I were to improve the zine Iād work on the type and image placement, except Iād make the type have a little more impact then it currently does. However I was really happy with how the booklet turned out, and decided Iād reprint it on an even thicker gsm and properly guillotine and fold it for submission. Unforunately I didnāt get any photos of my submitted booklet due to my own mistake.
Really like this!!!!! Great work @eamon-saunders
On my walk this morning and I couldnāt unsee the letterforms I found all around me!!
Reflection Statement
I CANāT BELIEVE ITāS ALL OVER!! Honestly had such an amazing time in GRAP2199!! I felt it was such a rewarding unit to be apart of. Andy and Karen made this unit so interesting, and for that I am thankful! I learnt so much about design, and I also learnt a lot about myself. I now feel like I think about design differently, and find myself asking many questions that had never occurred to me before. All the assessments challenged me in their own unique way, and for this I am thankful too. I am usually a very digitally orientated person, and I felt like assignments really took me out of that bubble. To create does not always mean to be stuck behind a computer, even though they are one of the most amazing tools a designer can have. I learnt to create with my hands and with my imagination too. I am so inspired by what everyone has done over the time of this unit- honestly I am so blown away by the talent of every persons work, so a huge congrats to everyone!! We made it through so we all deserve a pat on the back!!!!!Ā

EYE OF THE BEHOLDERĀ
My god this was a bit of a stressful one. With my interviewee, Ricardo Cavolo, only replying within a few days before the assessmentās due date, this one was close.Ā
I went back to roots for this assessment.Ā Since Ricardo strictly only uses his hands to create his illustrations I thought that that it was only fair to keep this theme going throughout his interview. All pages have been handwritten, hand-sewn, and hand-cut. Imperfections are Ricardoās perfection. An interesting man to say the least.Ā

P.S. get yourself a gal (or guy) who is able to sew, love you Becs x
I feel the pain of having to hand sew my god - this ended up looking really good though! I love the sense of aĀ āpersonal touchā to the work through everything being hand written, hand-sewn, binded, etc.Ā
This is so incredibly beautiful!!!!! Such great work
COMMUNICATION DESIGN STUDIES LEC 9
Week 9: Who Decides Design?//
In the week 9 lecture we had a look at some of the other students work- It was so nice to see what had been done and I was very impressed. The worksheets that Andy and Karen gave us were really helpful in making the quest for questions for our chosen creative that much easier. We also discussed the contemporaneous shift from Modernism to Post-modern theory. āThe faceā also poped up in this lecture. The face magazine was was a British music, fashion and culture monthly magazine published from 1980 to 2004 and launched in May 1980 in London by Nick Logan, the British journalist who had previously been editor of New Musical Express and Smash Hits. Itās first issue date was May 1980 and last issue date was May 2004. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Face_(magazine))

Ask me anything: FinalĀ YAY itās doneeeeeeee!! Over all I would have liked to have a bit more time on it to perfect it more, but I am happy with the look and it was whatĀ I was originally going for. I chose to really focus on the concept of layering and collage, not just in my images but in the printed type onto the various bits of paper I found lying around.Ā I purposely chose to stitch my zine as I wanted to reflect the bespoke nature of Sergeiās āartisanā approach to his creative practice, as well as his architectural background which is an inherent Ā influence on his work, as expressed through the distinct Ā sculptural aspect of his collage making. Stitching by definition is the act of joining, or fastening two pieces (of fabric) together. Ā As a collage artist this is exactly what Sergei does ā he constructs an entirely new image by joining two disparate images together. Ā Also the stitching reflects Sergeiās handmade approach in that he uses scissors to cut out his images in preference to digitally manipulating/constructing an image using Photoshop. In recent years Sergei has moved into the contemporary fashion, and the stitching is a reference to this new venture within the clothing industry. I wanted to put in some of my own collage styles as well throughout the zine, and this I had a lot of fun with. I wanted to add elements within the zine which related to Sergeis answers, such as his answer to artichetureĀ in collage- I created a skyline effect using the letter of his answers, and represented the corporate aspect of art through the use of a barcode.Ā Tumblr wouldnāt let me post more than 10 photos so Iāll have to add the others in another post! āØ
FINISHED!!! Iāll get more into detail within the next few posts!
Final!
Like, finally.Ā
So, the main concept is for my zine to look handmade because I always view my creativeās works as very crafty and organic. I tried to communicate my creativeās world by using lots of colours and mixed media too such as the textured papers and the different colour concepts for every question. I wanted to make my zine interesting and interactive by giving each question a concept.
For the front cover I used square cutouts to highlight each colour, so thereās yellow for question one, orange for question two, blue, red, green and purple to represent the following questions.Ā
As the first questionās concept is yellow, I used blue to create a contrast and also used an image which has yellow as itās most vibrant colour so there will be that yellow focus. As this question talks about THE key moment, I used a circle to focus on that key moment and the words on the blue page creates a contrast with the emptiness (in terms of space) with the yellow (like narrowing down to that key moment).
For the second question, I used orange as the main colour. The image I chose includes orange, red and yellow which provides the harmonious tone with the colour theme. As this question talks about her past and she did not want to talk in detail about it, I used the two plastic sheets in front where she doesnāt talk about it but the answer at the back reveals her brief answer to the question.
For the third question, I used an image which has a lot of red highlights so it suits the red colour theme. I chose the folding technique for this question because she gave a layered answer as well so the main answer is only revealed when you open up the whole fold.Ā
As for the fourth question, I chose blue as the colour theme because the main answer is about the ocean and I thought that the colours would match the dolphin image. The next page visually shows her other inspirations which are movies, books and people. I used her paintings and handmade book to represent these elements. I also used a cutout concept here so that it can be seen as one whole answer but at the same time the ocean image cutout is at the front because its her main inspiration.
Although the fifth questionās colour theme is green, I used red as the background to create a contrast. The foldout part also includes colours from the background, to create that harmony. As her answer talks about how she wishes to give hope and joy to other people, the foldout contains comments from her followers where she did bring joy and hope to them.Ā
The last question is behind and itās special because its a bonus question that Iāve been wanting to ask her. The colour theme for that question is obviously purple. I placed it sideways because the question needed to be viewed from both sides. Placing the question sideways gives the readers space to view it from both angles.Ā

PS: Sorry about the watermark (I find it so distracting UGH) , just needed an app which can quickly speed up my video.
Love the craft look of the entire zine and how interactive it is! I can see how much effort went into this zine. Love love loveeee
The textures in this zine are crazy! so many colours, patterns and it looks so inviting!
Dope⦠Just. Dope!!! I reaallly want to feel it woth my own handsss!!!
I love how every page is just a burst of colour and creativity! I felt the hand made concept behind how you made your zine really shown through and further reflects your creatives world in a nice way!Ā
each page having itās own sort ofĀ āthemeā that relates to the topic of your questions and answers is so smart and interesting - also the textures you can see are so interesting and would really continue to give off thisĀ āinteractiveā feel of a zine - love it!Ā
So so amaZing!!!! Really well done

Magazine founded by Andy Warhol closes after months of turmoil, including a lawsuit brought over back pay and the resignation of a fashion director
THE SADDEST NEWS :(Ā
A bit about Sergei Sviatchenko
Sergei Sviatchenko is a collage artist. Originally from the Ukraine he has lived in Denmark since the 1990s. Although he initially trained as an architect in the 1980s he switched to fine art eventually gaining his doctorate from the National Academy of Visual Arts and Architecture, Kiev. Sergeiās work bridges both realism and the fantastic. Through collage, he plays with image to create new extraordinary, imaginary worlds, which are simultaneously ordinary yet bizarre. What admire about Sergei is that surprising he is in his 60s, yet his creativity is contemporary and cutting edge.

Ask me anything: Production
MAYHEMMM! As I was rushing to get to the finish line after waiting for my answers for a while, I made the biggest mess of my life (which was the BIGGEST pain in the a*** to clean up by the way) Sadly, I was so immersed in the process of making my zine that I actually forgot to take photos of my process!! Literally canāt even believe it- so iāll just have to explain as best as I can. After playing around with some various prototypes and ideas, I settled on one- I wanted to have the pages stuck together, much like the sticking and gluing made in collaging. After I had gotten this done, I started off with making the cover. I wanted this to be the thing which grabbed interest. I originally started to make collages of Sergei him self and bits and pieces from different magazines and books I had lying around the house. This looked interesting, but it was far too busy. I also tried collaging hand cut letters from his own work but it lacked the wow factor. From there I decided it may be better to try and lay something out on the computer, and maybe create some form of photo image composition later on. I also wanted to add some acetate as well, to give the cover a really cool texture and feel.Ā
As I stated earlier on, I didn't want to use my computer too much. I used it mostly for the logistics and would then create on top of the pages later on. I really wanted to layer my zine, and create interest by representing the answers that Sergei gave me in different ways using various forms of collage. It was really important to me that I was able to successfully represent Sergeiās world without directly copying it. I added my own little things such as stitching (stay tuned as to why) and to pay homage to Sergei, I used quite a few pages with solid colour, representative of Sergeiās collages. Stay tuned for the final images of my zine.
Ask me anything: Research Stage
Even though the assignment is done and dusted, I wanted to post some of the various stages in the making of my zine. My chosen creative was Sergei Sviatchenko and I was honestly so thrilled that he was able to answer my questions!!!!! I knew from the start that I didnāt want my zine to be too structured or ācleanā- I didnāt want to spend too much time on the computer as I felt this did not represent Sergei and his working processes. I wanted my zine to be quite organic and have a handmade look. I was inspired after the week 9 collaging tutorial- and I really felt there was so much I could explore in the making of my zine. I wanted to take the items that were around me to make the zine, and create something new from putting all different elements together- rather like the collaging process. I love how rustic these zines look- I love that with each new page, there seems to be a new artwork to look at due to the many textures, layers and colours going on.Ā

These remind me of the photo image compositions that Sergei Sviatchenko produces. Even though the photos arenāt ācut upā or collaged, this zine still uses those plain backgrounds which Sergei is so wel known for
Ask me anything project! Final presentation, āLetās talk Brydie Mackā.
Well, after losing my WHOLE document because silly me didnāt save it.. who would have thought printing was going to be the worst / hardest part!! Unfortunately I didnāt acknowledge that i needed to āflip and alternateā my design so the pages matched up when printed landscape double sided. This meant the guidelines included on each page to display the hole-punch placement were not meeting up. :(Ā
ANYWAY, despite all of this negativity hehehe I really enjoyed this assessment and Iām surprisingly very happy with my final outcome. I believe this zine/mini booklet represents Brydie Mackās photography and aesthetic quite well. She described her own style as candid, fun, nonchalant and raw, so i tired to incorporate that into my presentation. Selected black and white images have been utilised on white backgrounds and printed on white Uncoated 300gsm paper. I incorporated a variety of different sized and shaped pieces of paper - square 297x297 being the main template, and to bind my book i used a silver metal ring to hold the pages together.
CHAR!!! I love this- great work girly!!!!
