Reflection
Beginning this course, design to me was creating and producing creative work that was to be shared and discussed by the general public. Design is to generate ideas and mirror society’s issues and values. My initial objective for this course was to learn more about design and the various different aspects of design that I wasn’t aware of. Things such as what made me want to study design? What makes a good design? Are my designs any good?
Throughout this course I learn’t so much and I was thrilled when it wasn’t just about taking notes in the workshops, but how hands-on and crafty they were. I actually looked forward to these workshops and not only having fun designing but also generating ideas for me for my other assignments as well. I found these workshops to be extremely helpful and productive.
From this course, I gained the knowledge and insight of understanding the history behind the systems of writing, which was known as Cuneiform, to the different eras of the printing press and how it wasn’t always as simple. I also learned about the different types of typography throughout different times and how they have changed and evolved. However my favourite was when we were introduced to the Post Modernism era of design, which began the discussion of Memphis Design. I loved how Memphis Designs generated a spark of creativity within other artists and how much it contrasted with the designs during the Modernist Period. I also enjoyed learning about Benetton’s Controversial Ads. It generated a lot of conflicting discussions between everyone and it also made me very aware of the fact on how design can have such an important impact on society. It made me understand just how important design is and that it isn’t a waste of time and energy. Without design, the world would truly be a dull and lifeless place.
I also really enjoyed learning and how to make a zine. Before this, I had literally no idea what a zine was nor have I ever heard about a thing called a zine. Honestly at first I just thought it was something Andy and Karen had created for this project and was completely oblivious to the fact that many many many other designers and artists out there had already created such beautiful and different zines. Getting to interview a creative and create my very own zine was by far my favourite project for any uni assignment! It was so much fun and really got my creative juices flowing.
Finally I would just want to congratulate everyone for finishing the semester! I believe everyone did such a fantastic job with their final projects and it was so interesting to see everyone’s work and how creative and different it was from one another. Also a big thank you to Andy and Karen for making this course enjoyable and fun.
