The four former editors of Vampire Knight and Vampire Knight Memories each chose their favorite manga scenes and shared them as farewell messages in Lala Magazine DX (2025/09, Hakusensha).
The current editor chose VKM Vol. 11’s title, “Memories from You,” where Kaname awakens to his true self and his desires. The other editors picked Zero’s first bite of Yuuki, Kaname’s rebirth as a human, and Kaien’s death.
“Kaname-sama carried tens of thousands of years of hunger and loneliness, yet never abused his power to satisfy his own desires, instead quietly letting things go and suppressing that longing deep within himself.
It was precisely such Kaname-sama who, after losing his memories, for the first time truly followed his heart and reached out his hand toward what he desired. Hearing words from him that sounded almost like self-punishment, meeting those eyes that were quiet yet unwavering, makes one want to cry and beg him not to keep saying “I have no right”, but also brings an overwhelming joy at the fact that he has finally acknowledged his own longing. This complex, conflicting emotion is almost suffocating."
幾万年: typically used in a poetic, dramatic, or exaggerated context to refer to a vast, nearly incalculable span of time
幾 (iku): How many / some / several
万年 (man'nen): Ten thousand years
The Editors and Hino Matsuri summarized the entire VKM story with the phrase:
「追憶と再生の物語、遂に完結――」
"The story of reminiscence and rebirth, at last, comes to its conclusion"
And Kaname and Yuki’s relationship was described as:
「幾星霜の愛を辿って――」
"Tracing a love that has endured countless eons of stars and frost"
~A love that traverses the passage of time. is the core title & epitaph Hino wrote it for Kaname and Yuuki
幾星霜(ikuseisou): It is a poetic, somewhat archaic Japanese compound (literally meaning "how many stars and frosts") used to reflect on the long passage of time, enduring through seasons, or recalling the heavy weight of history.
And Hino used this phrase twice for Kaname and Yuuki:
「さぁ、この手をとって。」
"Come, take this hand of mine."
「幾星霜の話をしよう。」
“Let us speak of countless years of stars and frost.”
「罪の告白のように、愛を告げる。」
"Confessing love, as if whispering a confession of sin."
So putting it together, the time here is not just something that passes, but something endured and survived, carried like memory itself: beautiful, heavy, and impossible to undo.
「さぁ、この手をとって。幾星霜の話をしよう。」 "Come, take my hand. Let us speak of tales that span countless years of stars and frost." In the visual layout, Kaname is shown enveloped by shadows in the corner, while Yuuki arrives carrying light and blue roses.(In nature, true blue roses cannot exist, as roses lack the gene for blue pigment. Blue roses were originally said to symbolize the impossible: things that could never exist, miracles that would never be realized, desires forever out of reach. So when Yuuki approaches Kaname carrying light and blue roses, she brings a miracle to him.)Her presence softly glows as she reaches out her hand to the man who had always been hiding alone in the darkness, inviting him, at last, to speak of the desires he had buried for thousands of years.
And this time, he did.
「目覚めのキスのように。罪の告白のように、愛を告げる。」 "Just like an awakening kiss. Confessing love, as if whispering a confession of sin.". Kaname has always seen his desire for Yuuki as a sin. But Yuuki reaches out her hand and asks him to speak it aloud. What was once guilt becomes a confession of love, and the soul that spent ten thousand years alone in the darkness is finally allowed to step into the warmth and light of the world she created for him.
They disappeared together. Never apart again.
And so the story of 「幾星霜の愛」 finally reaches its conclusion.

At the end of VK, Yuuki has already decided to die. This is their final goodbye. And her feelings for Zero are still just "suki". If 愛してる >>>>> 大好き, then 大好き >>>> 好き.
You can say 好き about almost anything with very little emotional weight. You can say it to friends, and you can say 大好き about food or books you really like. 大好きは、私はそれがとても好きだと言うときに使います。他にも好きなものがあるかもしれません.
Hino, being lazy, came across another cliché shoujo manga in LaLa, thought yeah, that'll do, copied the exact expression real quick, and went right back to drawing what she actually wanted.
What did you do to Yuuki’s eyes? They used to be her most beautiful feature, so expressive and full of layered emotion, and now they’re just two flat dots. I saw pieces of so many people in it fk u hino
Talking about what you dislike doesn’t mean you’re obsessed with it or approve of it lol. That’s like saying all these zeki shippers are obsessed with Kaname because they can’t stop talking about him 🤪
Somehow, some Zero fans think that mentioning Zero equals being obsessed with Zero, the same level of narcissism as thinking Kaname must have been secretly in love with Zero, he just doesn’t know it yet, and they probably know 0 things about Kaname as a character.

あの人に見せつけるためにもっと幸せになるTo rub it in his face, I’ll become even happier. Or I’ll become even happier in order to show him what he is missing.
“見せつける” here means to flaunt or deliberately show something off so the other person can’t miss it. in this context, living happily on purpose so that “that person” sees it.
What’s interesting about the sudden mention of “so that that person sees it” is that Kaname not actually absent. He constantly there in the speaker’s mental background, like a reference point for everything she does and feels.
Even when he is not physically present, he still shapes her emotional direction.
Calling someone by name is usually straightforward and direct, but “あの人” feels much more emotionally layered. It wraps unspoken feelings into a single word: an attachment not yet let go of, and a bond that still lingers.
In this scene, Yuuki’s expression carries a stubborn emotion that is part “I’ll show you,” part pride, but also a very real need for that person’s reaction.
And the first scene where she says it’s his fault for leaving her behind.
@eternalpassions
At the very least, when I face Kaname-senpai, I don’t want to be someone who feels ashamed…
….it’s an intensely strong emotion, something bound to every one of my actions, and it must have already been carved so deeply into me that I can’t even perceive it.
Post: "What's the difference between 'daisuki' and 'aishiteru'? Is it different for men? Is it just a difference in words? Recently, my boyfriend said 'aishiteru yo' to me..."
Second answer (6 votes): “Aishiteru is a step above daisuki. You can say daisuki to friends, but aishiteru...”
大好きより上の言葉ですね。友達のことが大好きとは使いますが愛してる…
third answer (45 votes): “its different! In my case, I think there’s a real shift in feelings when 'I like you so much' turns into 'I love you!' The meaning of 'I love you' is much bigger than just 'liking someone so much!' He must be absolutely crazy about you! I hope you two stay happy together!”
ちがいます! 自分の場合は、大好きから、愛してるになるときは気持ちの変化があると思います! 愛してるのいみは、大好きよりも大きいです! きっとあなたのことが好きでたまらないんでしょう! 彼と仲良くしてくださいね!
the word 'ai' is something far deeper and heavier than 'suki.' And 'suki,' 'daisuki' that's enough for current stage
Once, an ex said 'aishiteru' to me on a date, and right at the beginning of the relationship too. I should have been happy, I suppose. But inside, I was filled with a sense of unease.
To me, the word 'ai' is something far deeper and heavier than 'suki.' I believed that to truly reach ai, you needed to spend time together, to come to know each other much more deeeply.
Time has passed, and here I am now. I still haven't said 'aishiteru' to my partner. He hasn't said it to me either. 'Suki,' 'daisuki' ー that's enough for now. 'Aishiteru' still feels embarrassing. Like the word itself would overwhelm what I feel.
But with him, I can sense something like 'ai' slowly taking root. As we spend more time together, I've started to see his flaws too, and yet I still find myself cherishing him, precious imperfections and all.
What is 'ai,' really? Maybe it's accepting someone wholly, the good and the bad. Deciding that no matter what happens, you'll stay by their side. I still find it hard to put into words, but I think that kind of resolve, that quiet commitment, is what 'ai' truly is.
Koi = something you “fall into” ー it requires no effort / you find yourself doing unexpected things for the other person
Ai = a “choice”ー you pay attention to what matters to your partner / it is an attitude of actively choosing to do so.
This is similar to how I defined it for myself last year, but looking at these words again now, I realized: regardless of what state my partner is in, I am on the verge of choosing to be with him/her.
The reason it is still 'doing' rather than 'done' is precisely because I am in that transition period right now. I am in the middle of shifting from koi to ai. And I am glad to have become aware of that.
The moment when a man's feelings change from koi to ai. What is the moment when ai between two people is truly tested?
I'm in my 40s and self-employed. I want to know what it feels like when koi transforms into ai. I'm currently in a relationship, and his feelings seem to have already reached 'ai,' but mine still seem to be at the 'koi' stage.
How does koi turn into ai?

Zero fans are so desperate to reduce the meaning of "ai" because it immediately diminishes Yuki's feelings for Zero lol. It's so pathetic. Yuki had "koi" for both men, but only her love for Kaname grew into romantic "ai" and they can't accept that lol. Words literally printed on the page and they're still in denial trying to act like "ai" is just familial admiration.
Well the issue is they are still stuck in 2015 incorrect interpretations because that would mean admitting their ship never got to the level ours did. It’s been debunked at Ai means just familial love. Even without that knowledge it’s obvious that both had koi but only one ship made it to Ai. So that obviously means that Zeki’s love never transformed into the level of love yume’s did but they rather stay in denial of that. Like it’s been a decade since it’s been debunked that Ai is just familial admiration! lol
Honey, because it’s fucking true, Yuuki keeps saying that she and Kaname are not on equal ground, at least ten times. To her, Kaname was untouchable, almost godlike, and she felt that she had nothing of equal value to offer in return, which pushed her away from him. She kept asking herself: why would Kaname ever love me?(Kaname was also so insecure, like: she likes me because I’m her brother?) It isn’t until she sees his true self behind the mask that he is just a fragile man burdened with profound loneliness and pain, who once forgot his own name and wandered lost in the world, who aided humanity and was betrayed, the pioneer of vampire weapon research, etc., and everything shifts. That’s when she falls in love with him: the tangible, real Kaname Kuran. For the first time, he becomes real to her, no longer an abstract, unreachable mystery. She wants everything between them to start over from the beginning, so desperately.

Yuuki directly admits that she had been harboring romantic feelings for Kaname. However, the English translation renders 恋してた as “in love with,” which is a shame, because it flattens the nuance of 恋してた and doesn’t fully capture its meaning.
and Why Hino Matsuri chose that specific wording when Yuuki first confesses to Kaname, especially when there are so many different ways in Japanese to express romantic feeling?
To avoid any misreading or distortion of her feelings for Kaname: when she says her heart was split in two, it reflects how both emotions were still koi (恋)—simple, unformed, not yet fully matured into something heavier.
Only later, after Kaname’s Memory Arc, does that feeling slowly deepen into ai (愛), becoming more complex, more irreversible. So she names their child Ai Kuran, because koi (恋) is no longer enough to hold what her feelings for Kaname have become.

zero didn’t kill rido, the official vampire knight light novel mentions that rido chose death himself, for him a world without juri had no meaning left, and being able to touch yuuki, who resembled juri, in his final moment was enough for him
rido is what a pureblood looks like when it fully gives in to desire and violence, the extreme end of it, and in that sense he works as the shared dark side of both yuuki and kaname. both of them carry the potential to end up like him, kaname reads almost like a point between haruka and rido, while yuuki sits somewhere between juri and rido, but neither of them actually goes that far, that’s where they become similar to each other. they suppress it, they keep it in instead of letting it out, which separates them from rido, because rido never holds anything in, he just acts on it
Rido wants to remove everything that stands between him and Juri.
Following Kaname's death, Yuuki came close to becoming like Rido, attempting to wipe out all vampires, believing they are what stands between her and Kaname.
Yuuki on rido and juri - a powerful desire born from twisted love.
Powerful desire born from twisted love - i have it too
To be more specific:
Zero asks where her powerful desire comes from.
Yuuki reveal her powerful desire is born from twisted love, and the rest remains secret.
zero’s existence was proof that yuuki once lived as a human, and his death marked the end of that part of her. as time passed, she would only become more like a vampire, because you can’t keep playing a role that was never truly yours. in the end, even the time they could stay together was bound by a human lifespan

human yuuki holding onto zero was the instinct of someone who didn’t belong anywhere, reaching for the only person who seemed to share the same fate, just to have somewhere to place all that loneliness. she believed zero was that person, but then the truman show wall came down, and it turned out it was kuran kaname who shared that fate with her. that’s also why zero could no longer stop her when she acted on impulse, only kaname could pull her back. most of the time zero could only sit in silence watching her talk to herself, noticing how much she was starting to resemble kaname, and how she kept going back to the freezer to pour her heart out to someone who couldn’t answer. zero knew, which is why in the cd drama, when they fought, he went to the freezer for answers. Hino didn’t add this scene for fun, the manga has been hinting at moments like this all along
