When Levi first looked into the eyes of Eren Jaeger, it was through the bars of a prison cell. He saw a young man who had become a monster through no fault of his own. He saw someone willing and eager to do whatever was needed to secure freedom for humanity. In essence, Levi saw a younger version of himself staring back at him. He quickly took responsibility for Eren.

And then Levi had to go and beat him senseless. The thing is, Levi knew Eren would understand. He knew from the look in his eyes that Eren was willing to endure anything for the sake humanity. 

Levi is still doing all he can to help Eren on his hero’s journey. Recently, he’s been forced to rely on Eren. That doesn’t sit well with Levi who would much rather protect Eren than add to his burden.

For his part, Eren’s initial starry-eyed hero worship is being replaced with something more realistic and substantial. He’s discovered Levi’s human traits. Humanity’s Strongest is a clean freak who follows orders like everyone else. He’s also prone to surprising displays of kindness. This hasn’t tarnished Levi in his eyes, he’s beginning to seeing Levi as a real person, as a friend.
