This can't be fucking real oh my god.
#currentlyreading Everything's Fine by Cecilia Rabess because it was recommended to me as a comp for Echo Chamber.
In reading it and getting to know the female protagonist it made me think of the ways that Black women often negotiate romantic partnership in very mercenary ways rather than just out of pure emotion. Because of our marginalisation who we choose to date and fuck carries a lot of social weight to the point that picking a partner is rarely just about picking a partner. It's also about picking a lifestyle or a political statement or a form of access via osmosis. This especially becomes pertinent when the person we date is white.
I don't know just thinking thoughts.
Very Evie-like social awareness going on here.

being anti-amatonormativity in a romance centered world is like watching half the people you know put all their eggs in one basket and then drop the basket and all their eggs break and they’re crying and swearing they’re never gonna do that again and then a month later they have all new eggs in a new basket and they tell you the problem was they didn’t have a strong enough basket or fresh enough eggs and then they drop the fucking basket again.
(this post is about putting all your time, energy, and care into one relationship, about staking all your happiness on a romantic relationship, effectively making the entirety of your joy and stability dependent on one person who could exit your life for any number of reasons no matter how great the relationship seems. it’s about the societal expectation to build your entire social life around one long term relationship, putting all your eggs in that basket, so to speak, instead of tending to larger social network and maintaining a variety of strong connections so that even if one very important relationship comes to an end, you won’t be losing your whole social life in one fell swoop.)

when the grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one 🌞 🥰 and the sunshine one doesn't appreciate that kind of condescension from someone who holds everyone else in the world to rigorous intellectual scrutiny 👀🔥👀 and the grumpy one low key thinks the sunshine one is a lil morally bankrupt and self obsessed for maintaining the facade even when acknowledgment of struggle and negativity is necessary for constructive change 🤭 😌 and they get divorced. they get divorced. 🧑⚖️❌
the discourse surrounding is god is, is very much giving “a hit dog will holler” with these Black men getting upset because anaia & racine did what was necessary to get the justice they deserved. mind you, when sinners came out, not a word was said about smoke & stack killing their own abusive father. there were no “ryan coogler is is portraying Black men in a bad light!!” comments but since is god is was created by a Black woman, there’s a problem with her portraying a Black man as the family annihilator. this is reality so i don’t see the issue when Black femicide rates are already sky high and just keeps rising because these men won’t seek therapy.
it’s very funny to me how they want an all Black cast where every single character is portrayed as a perfect person who’s never done anything wrong in their lives. you don’t want to see Black antagonists or villains in media led by an all Black cast? bitch you are BORING.
I definitely found Sarah to be the most sympathetic character in Obsession. She's completely infatuated with Bear's awkward bumbling good guy persona and ends up getting horrifically murdered while never realising it was all a farce. We all rightfully discuss how awful it is when you're on the receiving end of the Nice Guy's idealisation but they're just as capable of causing harm to other women unfortunate enough to get caught in their orbit.
The Boys really ended with a sad whimper, huh?

outside of simping for jensen ackles i cannot understand why soldier boy is such a popular character. he's so vacuous and lacking in substance and complexity.
“I don’t like this expression “First World problems.” It is false and it is condescending. Yes, Nigerians struggle with floods or infant mortality. But these same Nigerians also deal with mundane and seemingly luxurious hassles. Connectivity issues on your BlackBerry, cost of car repair, how to sync your iPad, what brand of noodles to buy: Third World problems. All the silly stuff of life doesn’t disappear just because you’re black and live in a poorer country. People in the richer nations need a more robust sense of the lives being lived in the darker nations. Here’s a First World problem: the inability to see that others are as fully complex and as keen on technology and pleasure as you are.”
— Teju Cole (via feminizt)
Feminists might kill joy simply by not finding the objects that promise happiness to be quite so promising. The word feminism is thus saturated with unhappiness. Feminists by declaring themselves as feminists are already read as destroying something that is thought of by others not only as being good but as the cause of happiness. The feminist killjoy “spoils” the happiness of others; she is a spoilsport because she refuses to convene, to assemble, or to meet up over happiness.
Does the feminist kill other people’s joy by pointing out moments of sexism? Or does she expose the bad feelings that get hidden, displaced, or negated under public signs of joy?
Does bad feeling enter the room when somebody expresses anger about things, or could anger be the moment when the bad feelings that circulate through objects get brought to the surface in a certain way?
Feminists do kill joy in a certain sense: they disturb the very fantasy that happiness can be found in certain places. To kill a fantasy can still kill a feeling. It is not just that feminists might not be happily affected by the objects that are supposed to cause happiness but that their failure to be happy is read as sabotaging the happiness of others.

It's really funny to see The Boys go hard on MAGA when the show continually kills off their black male characters in a humiliating fashion and/or makes them subservient to white men, kneecaps the competence of their female characters, and has now made an unambiguous Nazi the romantic fixation of its two most powerful leading white men. Sounds like they're also right wing by another name to me the only difference is how they've branded it.
Thinking about my man Kentaro Miura again and I’m just going to post the Berserk hiatus chart in my tag, for when I am in that post-launch stress-free zone where I make a bunch of promises and imprison myself in a hell of deadlines:
His career is literally such an eloquent picture of mental & physical burnout that only gets worse and worse. If you don’t take care of yourself as a creative, if you “push through” as you believe you can (and have done in the past), your body will not let you do that forever. “Ha ha it’s like I’m working on university deadlines again” except writing for a living is for life. It’s your life. Not just a hurdle you’ll leave behind you once you finish university. You can’t just go on with those shitty Redbull-fueled “pushing yourself too hard” life habits you had in Uni. You MUST develop good life habits. Otherwise you will self-sabotage, you will go too hard, and you will crash and burn in a huge way.
(This is why to me Griffith is the perfect embodiment of that overachieving high-performance-or-die part of being a creative for a living, and I can’t help but read these self-sabotage scenes & his own antagonism as maybe Miura venting about both self-sabotage and the exhaustion of running yourself into the ground? Burn-out leading you to become something monstrous & becoming alienated from your life and those you care about? Even the emblematic helmet which signified his achievements being turned to a torture device, etc… It’s a very personal take I know but everyone has a personal take on this manga so there you are)
Kentaro Miura’s notes at the end of his contributions to Young Animal Magazine:
I came down with a high fever of 40 degrees Celsius. Thinking about it, I’ve only had two days off this year. (1993, No. 12)
I’ve lost five kilos without doing anything. I wonder why? (1993, No.21)
In the past two months, my average sleep time has been less than four hours. Now I’ll be Mr. Satonaka soon. (No.23, 1993)
I’ll be 27 years old in July. Looking back, 27 years full of cartoons, is this what you want? (1993, No. 14)
