MUSINGS | Trying to balance the many conversations about today’s realities with self care and a positive, hopeful, healthy mindset. Hard pass on losing my mind over this. I do hope we stay focused & this remains a movement, not a moment. A reminder to ensure you are doing your own homework and not centering yourself by expecting people who are working through this traumatic experience to comfort you through the guilt of coming to realization of how unjust our society really is. (Compassion amongst friends, family & loved ones is not what I am referring to here). Welcome to the party - there is grace, consideration & space for you here. That sense of foreboding, that sense of wanting to just disconnect from the news and just have a break from all these alarming stories is a fraction of what it feels like to actually live it. There is no option to just ‘stop thinking about it’ and walk away. We have to #leanin and take action to make a change instead of just hoping things will ‘get better on their own’. They won’t. It’s been decades, and collective inaction means a sustained status quo. The change starts with you & I, then reverberates outward. Our elected leaders need to be held accountable. Since we are the ones who elect them, we can do something about it. That includes expectation of growth from the presumptive Democratic nominee, VP @joebiden who, as Chairman of the Senate judiciary committee at the time, helped write the 1994 crime bill that exacerbated the imprisonment of a disproportionate number of Black & Brown people. We can’t make things predictable just to be rid of the current problematic admin. The movement needs to insist on policy & laws that prioritize community investments, ex. more money towards education at every level, higher pay for our teachers/professors & counselors, additional funding for social workers, additional funding for essential workers (nurses, EMTs, etc) and integrity as an expectation from leaders at every level. #tbt Breakfast by the Zambezi River. I’m a liiiiiiiiittle obsessed with rivers & mountains. I was born on a mountain & spent weekends with my parents and sisters in our Buea mountain village. Weekdays were in the city where we lived by the Wourri River. I suppose that sheds light on why I love rivers & mountains so much. These gentle memories bring me a lot of peace and joy. For the sake of sanity, I’m choosing to stay hopeful. With all the crazy stuff going on, it can be easy to lose hope. Voter suppression of black communities is real, but it is important to fight for your right to be heard. Georgia, West Virginia, North Dakota, Nevada & North Carolina vote today. Use your voice. Paying close attention to @tamikadmallory or @grassrootslaw or seeing examples like the color of change initiative, the opportunity agenda & the call to action for mayors around the country to address use of force in their jurisdictions gives me a small glimmer of hope. I can’t just stay in anguish or protest or put a post up on IG. There needs to be action behind those words, or those words become shallow and empty. Continuing to learn, grow & being extra kind to myself today, especially with my thoughts. Going to get up, work out, clean up, get dressed and put some make up on. An excerpt from my stories... For those of us who are already adults, I encourage spending time reading or watching documentaries so that we understand the WHY. If you just follow a movement because it is trendy, or do so out of guilt, it becomes hollow or empty and that is not sustainable. If you get up to speed and understand the REASONS BEHIND YOUR ACTION, you are better equipped to speak and move people’s hearts (which affects tangible change), your actions will come from an authentic space, and your concern, hope and efforts towards a more equal world will be sustainable.
