What's Playing: "Runaway" ~AURORA
You wore his braid in your hair, spent days and nights by his side. Yet, you didn't love him.
And that's what killed him the most.
You'd known Fili for most of his life. The Dwarves had come to the Blue Mountains years ago, settling high atop the Human village you grew up in. For the most part, the two races wouldn't interact, staying away for the own prejudices. Dwarves thought Humans an inferior people, untrustworthy, fickle down to the core. Whereas Humans feared Dwarves as mighty savages, biding their times to conquer and enslave them.
The toxicity that had brewed never stopped you and Fili from becoming friends. On occasion his uncle, the exiled King would come down from the mountains with his nephews for the rare trading that would go on between the differing peoples.
Kili had run off, again. And as his brother's keeper Fili had chased him through the village, finding him playing with a little Human girl.
"Get away from my brother." He'd said rather defiantly.
"We're just playing, no need to get your braids in a twist." You'd spat back, upset that he wanted to ruin your fun.
"We have to get back to my Uncle before he leaves us here." Fili tugged on Kili's tunic much to the boy's whines and protests.
"No! I don't want to go! I want to play more!"
"C'mon Kili, Uncle will be upset."
"At least let him play for a little bit, surely you have a little time. Besides, I promised to play hide and seek with him."
Fili glanced back at the direction he'd come, silently hoping that Thorin wouldn't be too upset. Perhaps they could afford a little fun, they'd been good after all.
Kili insisted on being "it", leaving you to pull Fili along.
"Come on then, I have the perfect hiding spot."
The young Dwarf let you drag him to a hidden spot behind some crates and boxes in a back alley. You nestled closer, shoulders brushing as you breathlessly waited for Kili to come looking for you. Such proximity made Fili blush, and he found himself glancing more at you then watching for the opportunity to run from his brother should he show up.
You weren't at all like his Uncle had described Humans. You were strong, spirited, alive. More alive than his own kin seemed to be lately, the loss of their homeland casting a depressive shadow that never seemed to leave his house. For once Fili felt like he could abandon the title of princeling in exile and just be himself, a kid. There was something about your captivating nature that made him feel freer than he had in months.
"What's your name?" He asked suddenly.
You turned, telling him in a hushed whisper. "And you?"
"Fili, Durinson. Heir to the throne of Durin."
"A prince then? Fancy pants. I bet you never get to have fun."
How right you were, his life was a series of lessons on history, the art of swordsmanship, how to rule, politics, even at his age it was exhausting. Kili never had to do that, he was allowed to slack off and play around. The pressure wasn't on him like it was Fili. He was to be king after his Uncle died, continue the line where Thorin didn't. It was expected that Kili would never have to be King, Fili's descendants continuing the mighty line.
For a child, the responsibility was exhausting. A heavy weight that threatened to crush him.
But just maybe, you could alleviate that for just a little bit.
"I've having fun now." He admits, earning him a smile on your end.
What was supposed to be hiding turned into a rare moment of companionship, hushed whispers and secrets shared. Promises to be friends. Good friends.
"What in Durin's name are you doing, Fili?" The deep made you both jump as rough fingers grabbed you both by the ears, pinching as they dragged you out from behind the boxes, Thorin's outraged expression striking fear into you both.
"You leave Kili all alone in the market to be kidnapped or who knows what, and you leave him to mingle with Humans? Haven't I taught you better?"
"Save it, come along and big farewell to the girl."
Fili casts you an apologetic glance. "Farewell miss, it was pleasant meeting you."
"Till next time." You wiggle out of Thorin's grip and slip away and out of sight.
"Come along boy, we'll have a talk about how to stick with your own people."
But it was too late, you'd made an impression on his heart.
That had been years ago, the memory still fresh in your minds. Pleasant, before life had become complicated and twisted. You were both carefree then, and escape from Fili's duties as prince in exile.
Eventually Thorin had come around to the idea of your friendship, Dis practically demanding that he cut her precious boy some slack. From then on you two were inseparable, leading to your invitation to come to the mountain after it's reclaiming, one of the few Humans to make the journey. Despite Fili's battered and injured condition, it was like no time had passed at all. You picked up right where you'd left off, the best of friends.
Until your childish dreams ended.
"My Uncle wants me to marry." It was sudden, a splash of reality to remind them that everything leading up to this moment was a dream. The harsh truth lay bare: Thorin was getting older, he might never marry at this point. It was up to Fili to continue the line.
The argument to defy his Uncle's wishes was long since exhausted, so instead you asked: "To who?"
"Probably some lady from the Iron Hills, alliances and all that. Someone he and mother will choose for me." Someone I do not love. Was unsaid, but nonetheless in the air.
"Do? Nothing, it's my fate. I'm bound to it as the heir apparent."
"It's grossly unfair." You mutter.
"I have no lady I'm courting, shown no interest in doing so, there's is little else I can do but let someone choose for me."
"What if you were courting someone?"
"Who? I don't exactly have Dwarrows lining up to be my wife. And then it would be the same, someone I do not know sharing my bed."
"What if we said we were courting. Just for a while. Until the King has forgotten about you and Kili gets married to his Elf. The pressure will be off you and then you can actually look for a spouse that you love. Then we call it off."
Fili's heart raced at the idea, his braid in your hair, a courtship to the woman he'd been longing for all this time. The one who couldn't care less. "You'd do that, for me?"
"Of course, you're my closest companion. Besides, it gives an excuse to spend more time together."
The decision was easy in both your minds.
"Very well, sit, so I can braid your hair."
You obey, sitting before him as his hands nervously took a section of your hair, braiding it with expert fingers. The severity of this moment not phasing you but weighing heavily on him. For you, you were helping out a friend. But for him....this changed everything. And while it was temporary, Fili hoped that just maybe he could change your mind on that.
Maybe the both of you could get a real happily ever after.
Thorin pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance. "Start over lad, you're telling me...you did what."
"I'm courting her, Uncle. I've loved her since I was a child and now that I can provide I wish to marry her."
"And why am I just hearing about this. Because up until now it was a secret between us, but I won't have you planning a marriage for me when another holds my heart."
Dis, at Thorin's side was moved at Fili's words, glad her son had found love like she had once. In that moment he reminded her of her long lost and dear husband, proclaiming his love to her. How they grow up so fast.
"And you've braided her hair then?" Thorin was used to his nephews making rash decisions but this was a new level.
The significance of the act weighed significantly in the room. When a Dwarf braided his partner's hair it was a binding thing that wasn't taken lightly.
"Then we have no choice but to go forward with this match." Thorin said at last, standing and closing the distance between them to take Fili's shoulders in a fond grip. "You have my blessing lad. Make an honest woman out of her or I'll tan your hide."
Fili was surprised to say the least, his Uncle had always had a severe distrust of any race but Dwarves. Maybe the pretty little Human he'd been bickering with during their quest was changing his heart.
The days "courting" you were like a dream he didn't want to wake up from. Nothing had changed outwardly, but there was a bond there for Fili that hadn't once existed. It drew him in closer than it had before. Even though this was all he could get, Fili would hold it, treasure it. For a little while, he was courting the most lovely woman in Middle Earth.
Fili never pushed you, never made it uncomfortable. He was happy to bask in your presence, take whatever scraps of your attention he could get. That would be enough. All this was going to end. But it would be enough.
Until Thorin set the date of the wedding.
"We have to call this off." Fili had snuck away to confide in you the details.
"And then what? You're back in the same boat?"
"Aye, but I'll manage. This was never meant to trap you."
"I'm not going to let that happen, Fili. I'm your friend, and if that means I'll protect you until you find someone else, even if it means binding myself to you, then I'll do it."
"You can't, I can't let you."
"I'm going through with this, I'm not going to condemn you to a life of passionless lovemaking with a stranger just to father little brats for the sake of a line. We can live separate lives, keep up the same façade. No one need know."
"They'll expect. Check the bedding. If not they'll ruin your reputation."
The implication was heavy in the air, the silence that followed just heavy.
"Then just once we can, no big deal."
"Please, don't be ridiculous-" For once in his life Fili was flustered and red-cheeked, looking away.
"Just once, it'll be alright. Then we can go on pretending like nothing happened."
"I should talk you out of this."
"But you can't. So tell your Uncle we approve of that date."
Fili sighs. "Very well, I'll make the arrangements."
Your agreement did nothing to help the despair in Fili's heart. He'd dreamed of nothing more than marrying you one day, and yet, he wished it hadn't been like this. But alas, he was doomed to love you afar, possibly till the day he died.
The wedding was almost as grand as Thorin's coronation, the continuation of the line of Durin an unspoken hope among the people. The ribbing Fili received long after you'd retired from the festivities leaving him blushing and restless for the night to come.
"Tonight, you become a man, laddie." Dwalin's smirk and clap on the back did nothing to ease his nervousness.
"Go easy on the lass, no one likes a brute." Bofur chimed in, raising his mug to him.
"Enough of your torment." Thorin mercifully interjected. "Let the boy go to his wife."
Grateful for the excuse and returning Kili's encouraging smile, Fili fled from the room, the weight of what would happen crushing him under the weight of it.
You were in their new chambers, taking jewels from your hair at the vanity. You saw him approach, and for once, Fili knew you were nervous.
You stood, crossing the distance to him. "Let's get this over with then."
As you lay down on the bed but Fili makes no move to you, the confusion is evident as he takes his time peeling off the layers of his clothing.
"I don't want to do this."
"What? You can't be serious, we talked about it. You can close your eyes, pretend I'm someone else if that helps."
"No, not like this. I want to, but not like this. Not like it's a chore."
"It's just something we have to do."
"Maybe to you, but not to me. I've dreamed about this moment since I was a young lad, and it was never like this. I might not be able to control much in my life, but I won't let my wedding night be like this."
You prop yourself up on your elbows. "Then how did you picture it?"
"We weren't in some elaborate hall, maybe a meadow or a home I'd built with my own two hands. Our ceremony small, just you, me, my kin. Pledging ourselves before Mahal and our ancestors. I wouldn't just consummate a marriage, I'd make love to you. Properly."
Your cheeks heat up and for the first time in a while, you find yourself flustered. "You pictured...me?"
"Who else?" Fili sighs. "Surely you've known how long I've loved you."
"Loved..." The word is loaded.
To make you understand his words, Fili stands over you, taking your face in his hands before slowly pressing a tender kiss to your lips. His beard scratched you slightly, but you didn't mind in the least. The gentleness he displayed making you melt into his touch, you let the kiss deepen.
As the passion began to build, for the first time Fili had hope that you might one day love him as he loved you. And with how precious you were to him, he'd wait a lifetime for that day.
