Dead Poets Society (1989) dir. Peter Weir
Cats swearing revenge
Harry isnât quite out of his teens when it fully hits himâthe war, the blood and the guts spread across the corridors of Hogwarts, the screams and sobs, the nightmares, the shadows that never seem to leave him.
Itâs too much.
He gets a flat in LondonâMuggle London. Hermione and the Weasleys give him space. Kingsley ensures the wizarding world gives him privacy. Not that some arenât reluctant. Rita Skeeter releases articles every day, wondering when their Boy Who Lived will return.
But Harry doesnât see those articles.
He tries to forget who he is for awhile.
His flat is cozy. He stuffs it with plants and paintings and books. He has a cat (or three). He wears sweaters and blazers with corduroy pants. He goes to the market every morning to buy fruits and vegetables. Thatâs where he meets the kindly old woman who lives down the street.
She lived through World War II and so many other wars, wars that Harry has never experienced but can only imagine.
She goes to his house and she goes to hers. Thereâs always tea and small cakes and dinners and cocoaâapparently she believes that a teenager needs cocoaâand baking and reading and knitting.
Harry uses magic to brew the cocoa one day, not realizing that sheâs standing in the doorway. She calms him by telling him that she knows all about magic.Â
Their conversations shift after that. They talk about their favorite creatures and how hard it was to watch them perish before their eyes. They talk about the wall that seemingly gave way to let them enter the magical world. They talk about lions and friends and family and love and betrayals and life and death.
âWhen did you leave?â Harry asks one day.
She pauses, a hand resting on his catâs head. After a moment, she looks up with a heaviness in her eyes, a heaviness that Harry sees when he looks in the mirror everyday.Â
âI was young,â she says. âYounger than you are now. But I had already grown up. I didnât want to leave, not really, but it became too much.â
âDo you regret it?â
âSome days I do, some days I donât.âÂ
âYeahâŠâ
Itâs a few months later, when heâs helping her shovel the first snow from her walkway, that he asks, âDid you ever try going back?â
âEven if I wanted to, I couldnât,â she says, shoving a cup of cocoa into his hands. âI was shut out as soon as I hesitated.â
He pauses, nearly dropping the cocoa, before whispering, âThatâs horrible.â
âWhat about you?â She escorts him inside, her cane tapping against the floor that heâs magically heated to warm her feet. âWould you be welcomed back?â
âOh, yeah,â Harry says. âTil they turn on me because they donât like the color of my shirt or because I sneezed the wrong way or becauseâyou name it.â
She laughs and he smiles.
âImagine that,â she softly says. âRulers of our worlds and weâre not even allowed in them.â
âImagine that.â
He does go back to the wizarding world, of course, but he never forgets his London flat. He visits the street from time to time, knowing that Susan Pevensie will be there, ready to push a cup of cocoa into his hands.

I donât think enough retellings of the Cain and Abel story make note of the fact that nobody had ever been killed or even died before when it happened. Cain had no idea beating his brother to death could possibly be a bad thing
Cain really did fuck around and find out
I'm sure watching monkeys accidently kill each other helped with that comprehension
Cool move. The Berlin government bought 200.000 protective masks from China for Berlin hospitals and the police (like in already paid!) and they were on their way to Germany.
Until the USA confiscated them in Bangkok and redirected them to the USA. Nice.
Apparently the same has happened to the French government.
That are absolutely asshole moves. Especially as that inflates prices and there are countries that stand no chance in a bidding war. Nice one. Really nice.
I saw about it in the French newspapers and I am absolutely livid about it.
Yes, it happened zu the French first and then to us. Sources say that the Americans are known to go on the airfield and to buy the protective gear and the mask for the double or tripple price.
Well, go fuck yourself, America.
The Backstreet Boys performing I Want It That Way together from each of their homes is exactly what I needed today.
OMGGGGGGG
how is this different than the Imagine song every one threw a fit about???? That one dude has a whole ass elaborate chandelier hanging behind him????
Itâs different because their singing is a product they already know people want.Â
The problem with the Imagine video wasnât that âcelebrities are rich people!â --we already knew that.Â
The problem was a group of random celebrities--many of whom are decidedly NOT singers--put out a presumptuous collab that absolutely dripped with the patronizing assumption that it was what we all wanted.Â
No one asked for it. It wasnât their song, they didnât do an especially good job performing it, and it didnât impart a particularly relevant message (in fact, one could argue itâs almost inappropriate to sing a song about imagining no heaven when people are dying, and many of the survivors are trying to take comfort in their faith).Â
Itâs false sentiment delivered by a group of people who are presuming that a syrupy rendition of a well-known and important (or at least important sounding) song performed by well-known and (in their minds) important people would make all of the unimportant little people feel better during a global pandemic.
It was tone deaf (sometimes literally), it was condescending as fuck, and it painted an unintentionally embarrassing picture of inflated self-importance that was really just a bunch of celebrities trying to stay relevant in this time when theyâre not getting the amount of attention theyâre all used to.Â
Backstreet Boys, on the other hand, are a music brand. This is their product. This is what they DO. And the tone of their video is one of âhaha, hey, I know weâre not those kids anymore, but hereâs some nostalgia we can all laugh at.â They hammed it up, some of them brought their kids into the video, and it was clear throughout all of it they werenât taking themselves too seriously. They let themselves be the butt of the playful joke, rather than trying to impart a quasi-profound message that wasnât even theirs to deliver (and didnât even apply to our current circumstances in any meaningful way).
Musicians offering us their products in videos like this one already have proof that itâs something we want, and theyâre doing it to help boost morale and give disappointed fans who are missing out on concerts something for free.Â
The Imagine video, by contrast, gave us a steaming heap of nothing so a group of celebs could feel self-important and significant during a time when everyone is suddenly realizing that they arenât.Â
Thatâs the difference.
Hozierâs done two from-home concerts during this, and itâs the same. His close friend (and normally his bassist) came over to play piano, they sat on opposite sides of the camera frame, and they basically acted like a pair of good mates playing a bar set, joking with each other and asking for requests while also explaining what current WHO guidelines are and raising money in âŹ4 increments (thatâs about $4.35 USD) for a child abuse prevention charity in Ireland thatâs struggling under the weight of the needs of quarantined children.
We needed fun and normalcy, they gave it to us and did something good in the meantime. (And also agreed to cover Toxic by Britney Spears.) There was literally no message there beyond âplease stay safe and also, if you can, these kids need help.â
We donât need to be preached at. We need to know weâre in this together. And yes, we need the arts. They feed the soul. But there are ways to do it, and ways not to.
Today I learned that Van Halen have that rider in their contract about âa bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones removedâ in order to know at a glance if the promoter read the entire contract. And the reason they do THAT is because they once had a stage collapse because a promoter hadnât read the proper way to set up all the specific technical stuff.
So if the band goes in the dressing room or catering and sees brown M&Ms, they know they have to double-check the stage setup for safety.
I heard about this on Freakonomics Radio. Turns out the bit about no brown M&Ms is HUGE, in BIG font, bold, underlined and quotated like theyâre on the Group W Bench.
The band was all, âWe have fifty-pound lights hanging over our heads and fire being shot out of cannons. We had to know whether they read our safety regs so we didnât flamebroil any roadies.â
interesting how this has become a meme in the music industry about divas. iâve always heard jokes that amount to âthis stuck up celebrity hates the green gummy bears!! theyâre refusing to perform just for that???â and its reading stuff like this that i realise how that joke might have come about. people get grumpy that the band refuses to play but cant admit its because THEYâRE incompetent, so they make it all about the M&Ms. another example of artists using a creative method to ensure they have a perfectly reasonable request fulfilled that is then bastardised by lazy people who wanna make money off them.Â
âŠthis is like the music industry version of hearing the truth behind the McDonalds hot coffee lawsuit

Head of security
GIVE đHIM đ Ađ RAISEđ
Can we talk about how cool this is? Cats are evolutionary predisposed to really like watching places from a vantage point. Domestic cats do this via windows, and wild cats do this by climbing trees or hiding in caves. (Hence why cats like boxes). This cat took that just one step further, by using surveillance tech (something cats, again, are amazing at) to monitor many vantage points at once. This is not only a great example of technology creating winners (the cat) and losers (the mouse) but of how technology often creates unexpected outcomes. Maybe humans are the smartest animals on the planet, but weâre generalists. Weâll never beat specilists, like cats, at what they do best.
@wolvensnothere
This cat is better at watching security cameras than most of my guards đ
@isaacsapphire have you tried replacing your guards with cats?
Cats are very bad at showing up on time.
My student submitted the most disturbing "Living History" project I've ever seen.
One of my least favorite parts about being a middle school history teacher is the bullshit âLiving Historyâ assignments we give at the end of every school year. Kids are supposed to sit with their grandparents and video tape, voice record, or transcribe their oldest memories for posterity (and for an easy way to bring up their GPA).
I have been doing this for seventeen years, and when I collected the projects this time around, I assumed they would be as dull, if not duller than usual. This had not been a particularly bright class.

Always reblog
think this has to be one of my favourite headlines of anything ever
The best thing about that article is that there gets to be a point where youâre like surely. Surely we canât get sexier and less-martyr-y than this. And that point is about a 3rd of the way through the piece.
Iâve seen a lot of videos going around of urban-dwelling critters coming to humans for help with various problems, ranging from boxes stuck on their heads to young trapped down a storm drain, and itâs gotten me to thinking:
On the one hand, itâs kind of fascinating that they know to do that.
On the other hand, setting any questions of how this sort of behaviour must have arisen aside for the nonce, does it ever strike you how weird it is that weâve got a whole collection of prey species whose basic problem-solving script ends with the step âif all else fails, go bother one of the local apex predators and maybe theyâll fix the problem for no reasonâ?
well, come to think of it, weâre at the top of the food chain but we almost exclusively hunt and kill prey out in the country.Â
raccoons and possums and foxes and crows all succeed in an urban environment because theyâre opportunistic and observant. and almost none of them would have observed us pounce on one of their species and then start eating it, you know? a lot of them would have observed that we scream and chase them out of wherever we donât want them to be, but other animals are territorial too. but thereâs a number of situations where humans feed whoeverâs bold enough to take them up on the offer, and we do tend to pull garbage off of other animals as soon as they slow down enough for us to catch. âa human got me but nothing bad happenedâ is a much more frequent thing than âa human got me and tried to eat meâ. Â
anyway like, weâre masters of our environment, we make weird shit happen all the time, we have lots of great food and sometimes we share, and we almost never eat someone. it makes sense for urban animals, over the last century or so, to just keep an eye out for opportunities to use us, and to pass the habit on to their kids.Â
It really is a weird, funny thing. Like yeah, technically theyâre predators, and they get pretty screamy, especially if you try to take any of their stuff⊠but given the chance it seems like theyâd rather help us out and sometimes theyâll just randomly give you food, so???
I mean, I guess in fairytales and myths weâve got our fair share of stories about dangerous people/creatures who might well kill you or otherwise ruin your life, but to whom people nonetheless turn for help in desperate circumstances. So itâs not like the perspective is exactly a foreign thing to our own mindset, really⊠Itâs just that, yâknow, we canât actually go make a deal with the faeries when thereâs something we canât figure out.
(Which brings me to an interesting thought about the ubiquitous rule about never eating the faery food lest you find yourself forever unsatisfied with anything in the human world - and the potential parallels to the dangers of feeding wildlife human food lest they become addicted and too tame and dependent to be safe for either themselves or us. Hmm.)
Okay, but that last bit with the FaeâŠmakes almost perfect sense.
Of the stories Iâve read, the food of the Fae, its origins and effects, are often strange and/or obscure.- Just like our food to most animals.
The Fae are strange beings that seem to know weird things that give them power or an edge over us.- Just like us to animals.
The Fae work and live by strange rules also often nonsensical or obscure to us.- Just like us to animals.
The Fae can easily obtain vast amounts of things we consider rare/precious/desireable, and have no problem with dishing it out wantonly for no other reason than amusement.- Just like us to animals.
The Fae sometimes are amused by having us around, but only on their terms and IF it amuses/intrigues them.- Just like us to animals.
GUYS, I SENSE A PATTERNâŠ.
-they have arcane social conventions and the punishment for not paying the correct respects right is banishment, if youâre lucky, and death if youâre not.
-they have wild and unexpected parties where youâd least expect to find them, but if youâre bold enough to entertain them theyâll feed you and caress you and play with you all night.
-time runs strangely in their realm. their homes are summerlands: warm and bright, no matter the season. there is always fruit on their tables. but not everyone who comes in from the cold is let back out again. Â
-their games are cruel and complex and unfair, but if you can beat them by their own rules you will access riches beyond imagining.
-sometimes they just fucking fuck with you, the fuckheads.
-they will absolutely steal your children away. when your children returnâ if they ever doâ they will come back strange. they will know things they shouldnât. they wonât know things that they should. your strange children might survive, might even prosper, might take wives and husbands and have children of their own. but they will always be marked by their time away from your world.
-the price for pissing them off is always death. sometimes just you. sometimes your whole community.Â
-if you are very good, and very smart, and very brave, they will grant your wish.
My eyes just got wider and wider the further down I read.

In the dog world, humans are elves that routinely live to be 500+ years old.

POV Fantasy slice of life book when?
âNow I am old. The fur around my muzzle is grey and my joints ache when we walk together. Yet she remains unchanged, her hair still glossy, her skin still fresh, her step still sprightly. Time doesnât touch her and yet I love her still.â
âFor generations, he has guarded over my family. Since the days of my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather he has kept us safe. For so long we thought him immortal. But now I see differently, for just as my fur grows gray and my joints grow stiff, so too do his. He did not take in my children, but gave them away to his. I will be the last that he cares for. My only hope is that I am able to last until his final moments. The death of one of his kind is so rare. The ending of a life so long is such a tragedy. He has seen so much, he knows so much. I know he takes comfort in my presence. I only wish that I will be able to give him this comfort until the end.â

âIâll rememberâ is the ADHD demon talking. You wonât remember. Write it down.
Visual exhaustion is another symptom of ADHD, which means that if we see something enough times (or we see enough instances of something), it fades into background noise and we fail to notice it. This is why a lot of ADHD people can stand living surrounded by mess/clutter, because itâs just visual background noise to us. We donât even notice it anymore. So if we write something down and see the note stuck up somewhere a lot â or if we write a LOT of somethings down and have a lot of notes hanging around â then weâre even less likely to think of/remember the thing because itâs just part of the scenery now. ADHD is the Catch-22 of brains.
A very good thing to know about ADHD. Donât fall into the trap.
A lot of folks in the comments are talking about writing on themselves or setting phone/calendar reminders. Your mileage may vary on those. You may also want to consider ways to set a habit of referring back to a planner or similar every day/hour.
To get those brain juices flowing, check out this Buzzfeed article on different ways folks with ADHD stay on top of things.
Readers, let us know if you have specific advice for this situation!
This is why sticky note reminders donât work??
