MILK (man I love kabru)
mithrun makes me insane in many senses but one that's particularly depressing to me is how he is stripped of his agency, not only in the narrative, but by the audience as well. he shows time and time again how strong, capable, and independent he can be with just a little support from others, and yet his family, the canaries, and the fandom treat him as if he can't even chew food by himself. on one hand, it's impressive work by kui, she can tell which biases surround her characters and she weaves them into the narrative to have us think more deeply about them; on the other hand its sad that it kinda flies over people's heads and people fall exactly into the very same things she criticises. Though it honestly makes it even more powerful when characters go against all that to truly, deeply respect him and his independence, and I also love seeing how Mithrun interacts with the other dungeon lords with the compassion he was never given in his situation--
op, did you actually read the manga? he can't even eat by himself. needing support is not something to be ashamed of, many people live like this in real life. mithrun has no desire to do anything at all, he would very much rot alone. i know that at the end of the manga he has a slight change and may have taken the first difficult step in dealing with his own situation, but isn't a magical change and suddenly hes all healed. he is strong, intelligent and very capable, and yes, he needs support. these things can coexist and do not make him any less than anybody.
but at the end i think fictional charas can have different interpretations and one is free to think whatever one wants so
I.. did say he needs support in my original post. I'm not saying Mithrun is completely capable of doing everything completely by himself, I'm saying that people vastly underestimate the things he can do.
Including eating by himself, multiple times.
And even more importantly, Mithrun himself is resistant to being fed by hand.
Now. Would it have been shameful if Mithrun did need to be fed and bathed by someone else? Of course not. Would it have made him less worthy of respect? No. In fact, that's exactly the state he was in right after the canaries rescued him from his dungeon!
However, the Mithrun from that time and the Mithrun we meet in the story are at completely different steps of his recovery. He can eat by himself, if reminded to. He can bathe, when reminded to. Really, the only thing that necessitates more than a reminder is sleeping! There's no need for it to be forced on him!
The important thing, to me, is that being fed, bathed, and clothed by hand is something that, while often necessary, can feel extremely violating- like your boundaries are being stepped over completely, like you have no say what happens with your body. The original post was just me feeling sad that the present Mithrun, while not needing any of that support, still has his bodily autonomy and boundaries completely overlooked simply because people assume he's completely helpless.
But no I guess I didn't read the manga 🤷
my point is that he doesn't do these things because he wants to do them, he just has in mind that it's something he needs to do, even if he is slowly working to change this into a situation which he can feel like doing this because he wants to do so, still a very fragile situation where he could simply lay down and rot at any moment. and that also includes the moment where we met him.
it's bad then people (and elves) take advantage of his situation to oversteep his bondaries, but deeply depressed as he is, he might end not caring as much as he would. my thought is, he still needs this kind of support, even if the examples we see in manga are not the most reliable and healthy of all. i know it may feel extremely violating being bathed, fed, clothed and etc. mithrun is in such a venerable position that it is extremely easy to take advantage of him, i know that pretty well. he still has his body autonomy, but he is too deeply injured to completely master his own autonomy because he does not feel most of the desires that a healthy elf should. this feeling of being a rag doll in other people's hands is familiar, which is why I think so much about how it's not exactly a problem for people to assume that he is helpless, the problem is when people intentionally take advantage of him. by dressing him up like a doll or, who knows, just giving him bad food to eat. or maybe putting very cold water in the bath so they don't have to heat it up. or just ignore him when he tells it/shows it something he doesn't want to do like he said about being fed by hand.
also it wasn't my intention to be ableist. i guess that would count as hating myself? who knows. i usually speak from experience when it comes to mithrun-type charas, but that doesn't make everything i say a set-in-stone truth.
I didn't call you ableist anywhere in my response, though? 😭 There's no need to put words in my mouth.
I really don't agree that because Mithrun has no desires, he therefore cannot take care of himself and needs to have other people caring for him. Does he need some form of support? Yes. But as @dunmeshistash (apologies if you didn't want to be tagged!) helpfully brought up, Mithrun already manages to live on his own outside the dungeon!
I think there's a very important distinction to be made between "Doesn't want to care for himself" and "Is incapable of caring for himself and needs people to do it for him." Nobody wants to brush their teeth, but we know we need to so we don't lose them. Nobody wants to wash their clothes, but we know we need to if we want clean clothes. It would be pretty weird for other people to butt in and brush our teeth for us in a situation where we are physically capable of brushing them ourselves! Mithrun, of course, is a far more extreme version of this. He doesn't want his teeth to stay in good shape. He doesn't want to wear clean clothes. He doesn't want to eat, because he doesnt want to live, when we meet him. However, he knows that he needs to stay alive, be relatively healthy, and maintain a decent relationship with the other canaries in order to confront the demon, so he manages to care for himself as long as it's furthering his goal of defeating it. When the demon is gone, he loses that single thread of motivation he had. That's why he simply "lays down and rots" in that moment. It's not something random that could happen at any moment, he lost the single thing keeping him motivated to live. Which makes it even more beautiful when he takes Kabru's hand at that moment. That he decides to continue to live, even if he doesn't have anything to live for yet.
op i just realized that the person i was upset at wasn't even you i'm so sorry i mistook your reblog for someone else's, you were actually nice to me 😭😭 anyways have my apologies 👏
Oh yeah, that's what I assumed had happened when I saw that reblog! But tumblrs UI is so bad right now that when I went to check if you had reblogged the post from someone else, it wouldn't show up for me so I wasn't really sure hahah

Op I think you put it really well with
"he shows time and time again how strong, capable, and independent he can be with just a little support from others"
Might be difficult to realize how far along his recovery Mithrun actually is, I know I myself didn't realize right away but even tho Mithrun needs some help he doesn't need the same amount of help he needed when he first got his desires eaten. His profile even says he can survive by himself due to the fact he follows a routine. He just happens to need more support when exploring dungeons.
"Even though he has no desires, he still has routine habits, so he can handle everyday life on his own."
So yeah he wouldn't just "rot" by himself at the point he is in recovery. The ending when he gives up on everything I think it's rather a reflection of how "live to get revenge" was an imperfect temporary solution to motivate him, he needed to be pushed into a healthier path to recovery but it doesn't negate all the progress he had made up to that point.

Guys Kabru and Laios are literally so in love 🥺🥺🥺🥺 look at this panel Kabru is looking so lovingly at- oops at Mithrun sorry. But look at him holding Laios' hand!! While Laios completely ignores him hold on- Ok what about after the Demon is defeated where Kabru helps Laios find purpose in life after both of them spent so much time living for the sake of revenge against the demon so by helping him, Kabru is also helping himself- wym that was Mithrun again? Shit.... Well at least Kabru being a royal advisor means he's sleeping with the King so we have that. Wait, Yaad is also...? 😳
Like listen. If Kabru spent a week alone with Laios and had to help him with some things after an injury, and they cooked together and spoke about their pasts and Kabru went out of his way to make sure Laios was comfortable and didn't push himself too far- Would you complain then? That Kabru was stuck with Laios against his will? That caring for him was racist???
Because I see post-canon Kabru in Labru works doing a lot of the same things for Laios and I see the appeal, because caring for someone, be it a friend, family member, or a lover, is cute! Falin braiding Marcille's hair for her is cute! Senshi cooking for everyone is cute! Marcille dressing Izutsumi is cute! Why is Kabru helping Mithrun suddenly disgusting? Mithrun can do most things by himself, Kabru isn't even close to filling the 'nurse' role people project onto him, Mithrun is not a geriatric man who needs to be bathed and fed by hand - you're just ableist!
ive been inactive in this blog for so long sorry. ship drama in fandom always drains every ounce of creative juice out of me. i dont want to always be posting petty stuff in here but i dont have any funny posts either so you all get the ether for now. CAN YOU BELIEVE THE SPORE POST IS STILL GETTING NOTES? insane. anyway look at my dungeon meshi oc again isnt he pretty
Dreamt I was Izutsumi and I was in a battle royale right. And I was in this little team with some people working together but then when it was only us left people started turning on each other so I just left. Like. You could just walk out of the arena. So I went to sunbathe on a building but then I figured I should tell everyone else that they could leave instead of killing each other so I went back and everyone left and I woke up

man i've been seeing people say crazy things about mithrun and it's pretty awful considering everything the character has been through
if it was all in good fun that's dubious but it seems to come from a desire to get others to hate him.........?
it would be fucked up to say other characters are ugly for their unique physical appearances and people would get mad right? can't we extend that same consideration for mithrun? he’s barely spoken and people are openly mocking his prosthetic eye and calling him a fucking dog like it’s their job..it's just so weird and overtly ableist like a lot of other things people end up saying about him...
calling him “grandpa” though he's relatively the same age as chilchuck. if it's because of his disability then first of all wow. and that's overlooking how he's actually jacked as fuck (for an elf and especially a tallman) and a physically skilled fighter and has a lot of stamina. the reason mithrun keeps falling out is because his disability makes him overexert his powers
it might be “jokes” but i don't think it's funny anymore tbh
“we need more disability representation” yall can’t even handle mithrun!!
No, genuinely and with feeling: people have been disgusting me
Not blocking the urls, these are big accounts, fuck y'all. Didn't screenshot it but also shoutout to the other big account that says they just "Can't see Mithrun in a sexual way", how mysterious, why is that? Give me a bullet point list.
People love, LOVE to gush about the autism rep in Dungeon Meshi, how cute and relatable and funny Laios is with his hyperfixation and stimming and poor social skills, but a lot of those very same fans encounter a character whose disability isn't "cute" and now he's a problem, now we're having to tread lightly. Mithrun is disfigured, he requires support to live - round the clock when he's on a mission and can't maintain a basic schedule - and the support he routinely receives isn't enough to keep him truly healthy so he has chapped lips and tangles in his hair and eye bags. He has blunted affect and isn't very expressive. These are all factors of his disability. THESE people know that, and yet they're perfectly comfortable saying
He's ugly
He's impossible to connect with
He shouldn't be loved - SHOULDN'T, the are saying it's ethically wrong to portray him romantically
He can't be seen as sexually engaging
Do we see the problem?
FUUUUCK I MISSED IT
I drew it
Just dreamt that Hyakkimaru (from Dororo) and Izutsumi (Izutsumi) were both bought by the Nakamotos and grew up together. And they had the cutest sibling dynamic known to man. I'm gonna doodle it later it was so vivid.
faligon sounds like a pokemon name so. rushes this 3 stage line

falin's jiggle physics are great and if people keep complaining that its 'gross fan service' i am going to start doing reverse masectomies on them so they learn that boobs really DO bounce bounce
I mean I guess, but the zooming and focus aren't nearly as egregious as. Most fantasy anime this past decade for sure. I think the big thing the people I've seen complaining forget is that characters being hot isn't bad, what is bad is them getting dehumanized in favour of being seen as sex objects.
Now, when I think of the word fanservice I kinda couple that dehumanization in with it, so I wouldn't really consider Falin's shots as fanservice, but I recognize that 'fanservice' to a lot of people just means anything that has a sexual appeal to the audience. Hell, sometimes not even sexual- But oh well. Semantics, semantics.
Well the tldr is. Whether it's fanservice or not, what matters isn't that anime hot boobie bounce, it's whether the boobies' owner's personhood is stripped from them in favour of the hot boobies or not. Falin doesn't just have a giant rack. In there she has one big heart <3 (God I'm sorry)
