Appreciating Dangerous Items, Like Guns.
"Perhaps," she said, grinning at Don - that particular gambit had paid off - but quickly subsided into a somewhat serious expression. "I need to know which weapons you are qualified to handle, which weapons you are familiar with and which you want to try out."
Carol wasnāt an expert on everything either, but she tried. Her specialisation was torpedoes, but her interests were wide ranging.Ā
"And then Iāll put you in the system, add it to your portfolio and all that - and we can begin testing immediately after. How does that sound?"
Right. She'd have to get on that as soon as her upcoming shift ended, maybe after she had dinner; plans, so many of them, and so little time.
Then Don tapped at her chin, slowly humming her approval at her planning. Careful, organized. Yes, they would get along perfectly fine, if the past half hour was not enough proof for both of them.
"Ooh, quite a few to actually remember them at the moment, but don't worry, I'll write them down for ya, I promise. Familiar? Most of the ones we have on Tactical, the phasers, occasional guns. Qualified to handle? A few. Which do I wanna try out?" She grinned, lively and toothily.
"All of them."
Appreciating Dangerous Items, Like Guns.
She shouldnāt, but⦠almost against her will (almost, hah), Carol reached into the bag and popped more chocolates into her mouth.
God, thatās good.
"He is," Carol said, very proud of how she is not stuttering. Now to pretend that she isnāt blushing. "Heās quite gentlemanly, as you say. Quite."
She should really ask him out for tea. Or coffee. But tea.
"All the things to do, and barely any time for us to do it," she sighed. "Sometimes I wish I have a yeoman like the Captain and Mr. Spock, but then I realise the best person for a scientist to have around is well, the scientist herself."
She eyed Don speculatively. āI could use some help in the experiments phase, though. Provided that the assistant is, qualified.ā
Her face was red. Hmm.Ā
"Yeomen do their best, and I admire their work. Yet I believe neither you or myself need one."
Then Don paused with a chocolate halfway up her mouth. An assistant in the experiments phase? While, of course, she had work of her own yet to be done and other officers to look over, well...
Why the fuck not, goddamn, that was excellent.
She looked back at Carol, trying to subside her excitement, because maybe she was just making quick assumptions --as it often happened. Nevertheless, she didn't even bother in hiding a small smirk. "Perhaps I could offer whatever few expertise I have. If you'll allow it?"
Appreciating Dangerous Items, Like Guns.
Twenty years - Ms. Porter, Don was a veteran. Wow. And she liked weapons instead of shying away from them.Ā
(Contrary to popular belief, itās not that men are comfortable with weapons - before they get used to it, some do become scared.)
"This?" She waved a hand around, indicating the general atmosphere. "This is the calm before the storm. Somethingās going to happen, mark my words, itās just a matter of how fast the Captain is making this ship go at it."
And then friends and fun things. Haha. Ha. āI did meet a fellow tea-lover,ā she says, racking her brains for connectors. āAnd spent some time with Dr. McCoy.ā The small kiss on the cheek she had given him for Christmas burnt gently, like a small warm flame, at the back of her mind.Ā
But honestly - most of her time nowadays was spent throwing herself into her work, convincing herself that Piperās death was so long ago (two months and fifteen days and -) and Section 31, ever elusive, if she could just find out and uncover the whole place and burn it down to the very last bits of their foundations -
"And work. Mostly work."
"I'd be surprised if nothing happened," she admitted, reaching into the bag for another chocolate. Nothing not ever happened on a Starfleet ship. Admittedly, the Enterprise had a larger reputation than others. And Carol was right.Ā
Everything was too calm. She hadn't even thought about that until then.
She ate two more chocolates to relieve herself.
Work, tea-lover, doctor. Hm. Don could work with that. "Doctor McCoy? My, he's a gentleman isn't he? I met him briefly at the New Year's party and a holo rec room. I understand you, though," she hummed (oh how she understood), "work can be time consuming."

She nodded her thanks as she reached in for one and ah, chocolates. She liked her sweets.
"That sounds horrid," Carol winced. "Weāre in the 23rd century and people are still telling us to stay silent and ābe a good girlā. But thatās not why any of us are ever in Starfleet, are we - to just be a good girl."
"We knew the risks, coming out here. 15% person of the original crew roster would die on away missions and all that." She sucked on the chocolate, savouring it. "I guess we trust each other and all that."
"But trust me, I would keep my eye on the Captain instead of the Romulans. Knowing him, we might actually encounter Romulans on this 5 years mission."
"Of course not. That was just one awful experience, the Commander was very rude, and not just to me but to everyone. Luckily I haven't seen any thing like that ever again, not in my twenty years of work."
No one daredĀ say something like that to her, anyway.
She leaned back, nibbling on another of the chocolates. "And, well. It would be a good opportunity for me to vent; it's been a while since I've had to shoot at big ass enemy ships. Mind you, that's great, I don't wanna be under attack 24/7. But if you say I keep an eye on that pretty boy Captain of ours, I will."
Don cocked her head. "But enough 'bout me and bad shit, I wanna hear some good stuff and stories! Any friends or fun things happening around here for you, Carol?"
Appreciating Dangerous Items, Like Guns.
Carol tried to stifle a snort. āI think that statement is actually accurate, no matter what you say about the Romulans,ā she said lightly. āPut Jim Kirk and a Romulan in a situation and the Captainās bound to be the one with more incidents. Heās a fine captain, just⦠reckless.ā
Too reckless, as she recalled his ācomaā months ago. Far too reckless.
"We try to be a family," she smiled, into her PADDās black screen. "I mean, we lost a lot of people then, and weāre all greenhorns no matter how much faith they put in us - but we support anyone who becomes part of the crew. At least thatās the sentiment I have." She laughed. "A bit naive, I know. But a family is always nice."
Don still had her doubts. Though, hey, the girl had been more time in that ship than she had, so she'd believe her. And who was Don to feel free to judge?
She hummed pensively, smiling slightly.
"It ain't naive," she reached into one of her uniform's pockets and pulled out a small bag of chocolates she'd gotten from those pesky merchants. She didn't like them, oh, not at all. But the little candies were too damn good. So she offered one to Carol as she popped one into her mouth.
"The first ship I ever served in was anything but comfortable. I didn't feel like I fit in, and everyone told me that wasn't important, that I should've just done my job and stay silent and be a good girl. Feeling like family is good, it's important. Even when you lack a certain bit of experience." She valued that most of all, probably.
"I know you've lost people. I've also seen some lucky enough to have survived, saved by the Captain, saved by you all, and they're happy. So I'll keep saying them Romulans ain't got nothing on you," she grinned.Ā
Appreciating Dangerous Items, Like Guns.
"I was assigned to the Enterprise after the incident with John Harrison," she answered, her tongue tripping over the alias. "And Iāve been part of it ever since. I canāt say Iāve been on away missions much, however - thereās not much for me to do unless someone needs weapon specification on the nativesā weapons - and more often than not the weapons themselves are primitive."
She cleared a bit of table space for Don as she talked. āAlso - the Zumwalt? Wasnāt that the Dreadnought-class starship meant to patrol the Romulan space boundaries? The one with the phaser banks with settings up to 16?ā She had wanted to go there - but a scientist had no place in a ship meant to only defend.
John Harrison. She'd heard of him, bits here and there, mostly rumors that spread among the crew and the gossip of the events that had happened long before. Don had collected enough information to know that man was a motherfucker. As she spoke, she listened.
Don then shifted closer to the space that had been cleared out. "Yeah, good ol' Zumwalt. But they thought it'd be wiser to be here, apparently they think Jim Kirk's ship is more troublesome than Romulans which is just fuckin' dumb if you ask me."
"But you know what? I'm not sad about it. I like it here, you're all so kind even when you're being reckless and getting yourselves in trouble," she winked, "it's fun."
[Asim just laughed, tilting his chin to his chest in order to hide his embarrassment. He gave his head a good shake before he was able to return eye contact with the one, casting her a curious gaze.]
I wouldnāt have ever pegged you as the type to break rules give yourā¦stature and all. Ah yes that would be good fun! I already have plans to explore Boston when we get back, so Iāll add San Francisco on there as well!
Yeah that sounds like a plan! I do feel your pain, weāre all so very diverse. But where can you eve bake in a place like this?
Ah yes, thank you. I tried looking in the Science department but had no luck, engineering next I suppose!
My stature? [She finally laughs, wrinkling her nose and shaking her head.] Oh, I worked hard to be where I am now, indeed I did. But working hard doesn't mean you don't get to have fun every once in a while, son. When we get back, have fun in Boston, I hear it's nice.
I'm not sure there's a kitchen around here, which is why I haven't baked shit since I got here. But there are machines in Engineer --where yes, you should look for your mysterious computer codes person-- that might as well pass for ovens.
Don't tell anyone I said that.Ā

Well, if you put it that way, then sure, maāam, I guess it is. [Asim pushed the bag slightly forwards so she could read the writing, before tucking it back against himself.]
I believe that is very interesting! I was only in San Francisco very briefly for basic training. It seems to be a big place for the melting pots of cultures, and its very high tech. Is it a challenge living there?
Ah thatās an odd coincidence then. I should really make you something, some Sandesh possibly. Hm, just need to find someone with some saffron. And Iāll keep an eye out for your boo for you.
Do you know anyone who likes computer codes?Ā
Well aren't you sweet.
Not really a challenge, not when you know how to succeed and when you ain't afraid to break a rule or two. Maybe next time we get a shoreleave back on Earth or once this mission's over, you should go around, explore a lil' bit.
Oh, don't worry about it. But if you do decide to cook somethin', might as well tell me. I love baking. I'm good at it. Not many 'round here are a fan of the gastronomy, you know?
Computer codes? No dear, m'afraid not. Sounds like something of Sciences or Engineering.
[She smiled, pleased sheād cleared the mix-up, but was admittedly flustered when she brought up the bear. Most people had probably assumed it was someone elseās, she hoped, and the cookbook hers. But there was no use lying.]Ā
Yes, itās mine. Got it when I was very young; it was a birthday gift. Thankfully it ended up in good hands; there are more embarrassing things to be looking for.Ā
[Hmm.]
A teddy bear is no embarrassing thing. Lemme tell you somethin', [Don nudges the cup even farther away as she sprawls in her seat,] I still keep a stuffed toy leopard my momma gave me when I was ten. If that had gotten mixed up, why, I would have turned the entire ship upside down just to get it back.
It's cute, by the way, [she winks, smiling.]Ā
