āHatake Kakashi x fem!reader x Uchiha Obitoā
"Naruto is at the center of trouble again, huh..." Lord Third sighed, peering through his crystal ball at the Academy's newest graduates.
Watching the screen, a bittersweet ache stirred in Y/Nās chest. *How wonderful would it have been if Obito and Rin were here to see this,* she thought. *To see Lord Fourth and Lady Kushinaās boy growing up.*
Beside her, Kakashiās eye involuntarily darted toward Y/N. She was completely absorbed in her own thoughts, missing his gaze entirely. When he finally looked away, Y/N turned her eyes to him, silently hoping that this time, he would finally open his heart to a new batch of students.
Later that night, the two of them sat over drinks, the ambient warmth of the tavern settling around them. Y/N swirled her drink, looking across the table at Kakashi.
"So, what kind of kids are they?" she asked, leaning in. "Haruno Sakura, Uchiha Sasuke, and Uzumaki Naruto, right?"
"I don't know if they're worthy of my time yet," Kakashi replied lazily, not lifting his eyes from the pages of *Make-Out Tactics*.
"Itās about time you took on a squad, don't you think?"
"Only if they pass."
"You are seriously a hard nut to crack!" Y/N groaned, throwing her hands up in frustration before gulping down her glass of sake. "Just what kind of team will actually satisfy you?"
"One day, youāll see."
"Aaaah! Why youā!" Already tipsy and thoroughly exasperated, Y/N lunged forward, attempting to grab his collar to shake the answer out of him.
*THUD.*
Her forehead slammed against the wooden table with a resounding crack. The alcohol had finally won, sending her straight into a blackout. Kakashi stared down at her limp form, letting out a heavy, defeated sigh.
"Great," he muttered, closing his book. "Now I have this one to carry home."
"Aha! So that was it?! Teamwork?!" Y/N laughed, the realization finally dawning on her. "Thatās all he wanted? And here I was using every single one of my brain cells trying to figure it out." She looked down at the short, spiked yellow hair of the boy in front of her. "What's your name anyway, kiddo?"
Y/N knelt down, helping to untie the thick ropes binding Naruto to the training post.
"I'm Uzumaki Naruto, *dattebayo*!" the boy chirped, though he eyed her with a sudden hint of caution. "Why are you helping me anyway?"
"Ah, I forgot to introduce myself. Iām Y/N L/N, a friend of your sensei," she said, offering him a warm, reassuring smile. "To be honest, I just wanted to uncover the mystery of why he failed so many other teams. Turns out it was nothing too serious."
Naruto stared at her, caught completely off guard by her kindness. *She's not flinching away... or looking at me like I'm a monster,* he realized, a genuine, matching smile blooming across his face.
"Letās go then, Naruto," Y/N said, patting his shoulder. "We shouldnāt fall too far behind the others."
"You're right!" As if on cue, Naruto burst into a sprint toward the rest of Team 7.
Kakashi slowed his pace as Y/N caught up to him, walking side-by-side.
"So that was the big secret? Simple as that?" she teased.
"Simple as that," he replied with a casual shrug.
"Huh? Who is this lady now?" Sakura shrieked, pointing a finger. "Don't tell me, Senseiāare you bringing your girlfriend to work?!"
Kakashi scoffed, shaking his head. "She's not my girlfriend. Just a friend."
Y/N glanced over at the genin, her eyes lingering on the pink-haired girl before drifting to the quiet boy walking beside her. *An Uchiha, huh...* she thought, easily picking up on the distinct, sharp chakra signature unique to his clan.
Clearing her throat, she flashed them a bright smile. "Alright, since you're all official ninjas now, how about I treat everyone to dinner so we can get to know each other? Believe it or not, this is a massive celebration for me, too!"
"Really?! Thank you, ma'am!" Naruto and Sakura cheered in unison, while Sasuke merely offered a quiet nod of approval.
Y/N looked over at Kakashi, a soft, tender expression softening her features. *Iām just glad you finally have them,* she thought, a bittersweet relief washing over her. *A distraction from our shared pain.* Kakashi noticed the look, but chose to say nothing, his gaze lingering on her for a moment.
After waving goodbye to Team 7 at the restaurant, Y/N turned back to the silver-haired man.
"I'm really glad you have a team now, Kakashi." She gently fist-bumped his shoulder, smiling up at him. Kakashiās eye softened significantly before he gave a small nod and began to walk away.
"Hey, let me walk you home!" she called out, jogging to catch up with him.
Steam surged from the hot, misty kitchen as Y/N stumbled out, balancing four bento boxes precariously in her arms. She puffed a breath upward, trying to blow a stray strand of h/c hair out of her eyes.
"Geez, they better be grateful for this!" she muttered, glancing at the clock. Her eyes went wide. "Crap! Did they leave the village already?!"
Sprinting out the front door, she navigated the bustling crowds of Konoha, her feet carrying her as fast as they could manage until she finally reached the massive gates of the Hidden Leaf.
"Right on time!" she panted, huffing out a breath as she took in the startled expressions of Team 7 and the old builder, Tazuna.
Without missing a beat, she handed a bento to each of the kids, leaving a notably larger one for Kakashi. Tazuna looked at her expectantly, hoping for a lunch of his own, but Y/N just awkwardly scratched the back of her neck, offering an apologetic grin that left the old man looking a little deflated.
"I packed lunches for you guys! It's loaded with nutrients to keep you growing, of course," she smiled warmly, patting each of the kids on the head. Her gaze then shifted to Kakashi, her eyes turning serious. Kakashi caught her drift, his sharp eyes subtly scanning the tree line, already aware of the hidden threats lingering in the shadows outside the gates.
"Thank you so much, Miss Y/N!" the kids shouted eagerlyāwell, everyone except Sasuke, who quietly tucked his away for later.
"You kids just make sure to come back safe and sound. I heard this is a C-rank mission," she said, giving each of them a playful fist bump. When she reached Sasuke, the gesture caused the young Uchiha's ears to flush a bright red from slight embarrassment.
"You too, Kakashi. Safe and sound, you hear me? I can't afford to lose my favorite drinking buddy." She laughed, lightly tapping his shoulder. He shrugged off the teasing, but a faint, gentle softness crept into his expression.
"Of course we're gonna come back safe, Miss Y/N! After all, I can't die before I become the Hokage, *dattebayo*!" Naruto declared proudly.
Unable to resist his sheer cuteness, Y/N leaned down and pinched his cheek. Naruto let out a dramatic pout, while Sasuke huffed and Sakura giggled at the display.
"We're heading out now," Kakashi announced, snapping himself out of the lighthearted moment. "Stay safe, Y/N. Don't go looking for trouble on your own missions."
As they turned to walk down the path, Kakashi's mind drifted back to a ghost from his past. *I promised Obito and Rin I'd keep you safe. Just stay here in Konoha where it's secure until I get back,* he thought silently.
"What?! Zabuza the Demon?! I need to go right now! Clearly, this mission is a B-rank or higher!" Y/N roared, slamming both hands down onto the Hokageās desk. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she began to pace frantically around the room.
Lord Third sighed, exhaling a thick puff of smoke from his pipe as he watched her pace. "Calm down now, Y/N. Have some faith in him."
"Faith?!" Y/N shot back, stopping dead in her tracks. "He's dealing with a rogue Mist assassin, one of the Seven Swordsmen! While babysitting three fresh genin! You expect me to just sit here andā"
"I expect you to remember who Kakashi is," the Hokage interrupted softly, his gaze steady and commanding. "He is a former ANBU captain, trained by the Fourth himself. If anyone can handle an unexpected escalation and keep those children alive, it is him."
Y/N clenched her fists, her knuckles turning white. She looked out the window toward the village gates, her mind racing with a million worst-case scenarios. I know how strong he is, she thought bitterly, but I also know the ghosts he carries into battle.
Slowly, she let out a shaky breath, forcing her hands to relax at her sides.
The heavy silence of the Hokageās office pulled Y/N backward, the stark room fading as a completely different flood of memories took hold.
**Flashback**
Y/N hadn't been a part of Team 7. She belonged to a completely different squad, which meant she rarely had a reason to interact with the aloof Kakashi. But her eyes had always followed a different member of that team.
She had a massive, quiet crush on Obito.
She loved everything about himāhis loud, stubborn determination, the way his goggles always sat lopsided on his head, and how fiercely he cared about everyone around him. Because she wasn't on his team, she cherished every rare moment they got to spend together.
One afternoon, right after Team 7 had returned from a grueling mission, Y/N managed to catch Obito alone at their favorite dango shop. Kakashi and Rin had already headed home, leaving just the two of them sitting on the wooden bench. Obito was happily stuffing his face, loudly complaining about "Bakashi" showing off as usual, while Y/N just watched him, her heart doing backflips at his bright, rowdy laughter.
But then, Obito's expression shifted. He stared down at his empty dango skewer, his tone suddenly dropping into something surprisingly serious.
"Hey, Y/N..." he muttered, scratching the back of his head. "Kakashi... he acts like he doesn't need anyone. He thinks he's a lone wolf, especially after everything with his dad. But I worry about him. If... if anything ever happens out there on our missions... look out for him, okay? Promise me you won't let him entirely lock himself away from the world."
Y/N had stared at him, touched by how deeply Obito cared for the rival he always claimed to hate. Looking into his dark eyes, she felt her feelings for him deepen even more. She offered a soft smile and nodded. "I promise, Obito. I'll keep an eye on him for you."
But the chance to tell Obito how she truly felt was ripped away. Kannabi Bridge changed everything.
When the news of Obito's death reached the village, Y/N felt her world shatter. The boy she secretly loved was gone, leaving behind an agonizing emptiness.
Shortly after the tragedy, a grieving Rin pulled Y/N aside near the training grounds. Rinās eyes were red and hollow, the weight of their shared loss hanging heavily between them. Rin took Y/N's trembling hands, squeezing them tightly.
"Y/N... I know how much Obito meant to you," Rin whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "And I know you weren't close to Kakashi before. But he's drowning in guilt, and I... I can't pull him out alone. Please. Stay with us. Stay with me and Kakashi. We need to stick together, for Obito's sake."
Remembering her promise to the boy who was now just a name on the Memorial Stone, Y/N had choked back her tears and agreed.
**Present Day**
Y/N blinked, the vibrant, painful colors of the past snapping back into the dark wood-paneled walls of the Hokageās office.
She swallowed the bitter lump in her throat, her hand resting heavily against the window frame. She and Kakashi had never been close growing up, and even now, they were just two damaged people sharing drinks and a mutual ghost. But she had made a promise to the boy she loved, and a promise to the friend they both lost.
"I'm holding you to that, Lord Third," Y/N said, her voice dropping into a fierce, quiet resolv e as she stepped back from the table. "Because I intend to keep my word to the ones who aren't here to check up on him."
A/N: First chapter out already! Would love to hear some recommendations and suggestions if anyone has any ^_^. Iāve decided to make Kakashi and Y/N be friends and then the line between friendship and something much more blurs( ͔° ĶŹ ͔°).
