Mercy, the original Death
Mercy looked out from his tower in Purgatory, the home of the Armageddons. He lived in the Well of the Dead, the limitless home of all those who passed away from life. Mercy wanted a break from his desk job, sure he had all the lesser Deaths escorting every soul back to the well, but Mercy wanted to get back out there. There was a knock at the door. Mercy’s bony hand gripped the railing hard, then reluctantly released as Mercy glided over to the door of his office. He opened the door, and a young man in a black suit entered with a clipboard and papers in his hand. “We’ve had little problems gathering the souls today sir!” The man said.
ECOTH, Mercy said, his voice was that of a thousand people of different genders and ages talking at once. WHAT DO THE OTHER DEATHS THINK OF ME?
“Sir?” Ecoth asked.
I SIT HERE ALL DAY, DOING NOTHING. I WANT TO ESCORT A POOR SOUL AGAIN, I WANT TO BRING PEACE TO THEM AGAIN. I LOOK LIKE A LAZY BOSS TO THEM. Mercy said, his two jaws agape and his eyes glowing a fierce red.
“Sir, no one thinks of you that way.” Ecoth said.
SURELY I SHOULD DO ONE ESCORT AT THIS TIME. Mercy said.
“Sir, with all due respect, your appearance doesn’t make it likely that they’ll cooperate with you.” Ecoth said, “All us deaths look like humans to ease them. You, uh, you’re appearance doesn’t help humans relax.”
Mercy looked at him, ECOTH, LET ME DO ONE, THERE MUST BE ONE.
Ecoth was about to protest, but then decided to give him one, not one that he’ll succeed though, the boss was vital to keeping the deaths moving. “There is a child that needs to be escorted.” Ecoth said slowly.
WHO? Mercy asked.
The girl was crying at the corner of the street. She didn’t expect that her death would mean she’d listen to people talk shit about her. Tears rolled down from the memory of her eyes, her face was buried in her arms.
A shadow was cast over her, she looked up, expecting to see a man waiting for the light to change. Looking at her was a skeleton face, with two jaws and red glowing eyes. It wore a faded green cloak with a red shirt covering it’s torso, but it had no legs. It was floating with it’s cloak gliding over the floor. In it’s left hand was a large scythe, with an almost fleshy blade, and snaking around it’s cloak, was a fleshy tail with a sharp bone like blade on the end.
She froze, she was going to die, well she already died she knew, but now she was going to die again. The creature floated closer to the ground and sat beside her, it placed the scythe to the side. ARE YOU OKAY? it asked.
She looked at it in confusion. It continued to stare at her, it extended a hand and a blanket appeared in it’s palm. It slowly moved it towards her, she tried moving away from it, and it paused. YOU ARE COLD, YOU MIGHT BE DEAD, BUT YOU SHOULDN’T BE UNCOMFORTABLE, it said, and continued, she didn’t move away this time, and the creature softly placed the blanket over her.
She pulled the blanket more over her, it was right it was cold. She looked at it’s eyes, she thought for a second it looked sad, if a skeleton could look sad. ARE YOU ALRIGHT? YOU ARE AWFULLY YOUNG TO DIE. It said. Her eyes teared up and she started crying again. It slowly moved it’s arms around her and hugged her softly. DO YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT?
She looked back up at it, still crying, “You’re death? I thought you’d be more angry.”
The skull head shook itself, I AM A DEATH, MY TRUE NAME IS MERCY. BUT NO MORE ABOUT ME, WHY ARE YOU CRYING?
She looked at the street, “I wanted to get away from the words. From those bastards at school.” She said.
It patted her back and reached into it’s cloak, it pulled out a candy bar and offered it to her. It sounded like it was going to speak, but she snatched it out of his hand and started to open it. BULLIES? Mercy said, NO ONE DESERVES TO BE BULLIED.
“Even a no body?” She said.
Mercy looked at her, YOU ARE NOT A NO BODY, YOU ACHIEVED SOMETHING THAT BILLIONS OF CREATURES NEVER GOT TO HAVE. A LIFE.
She looked at Mercy, “Like who?”
Mercy looked down at the pavement, LIKE ME, I WAS MADE TO WORK, I NEVER GOT TO LIVE FREELY, AND WHEN I NO LONGER NEEDED TO WORK, I COULD FOCUS ON NOTHING ELSE.
She stared at Mercy, Mercy looked at her, LIFE IS NOT SOMETHING TO THROW AWAY, AND EVEN THOUGH YOU THREW YOURS AWAY, YOUR LIFE MEANT MORE THAN THOSE PEOPLE WHO BULLIED YOU.
She looked back to the street, COME THOUGH, I’LL TAKE YOU SOMEWHERE WARM, WHERE YOU CAN HAVE AN ACTUAL MEAL. Mercy said and offered his hand to her. She stared at it and looked at him.
Then she took his had in hers.
