{chris wood, thirty-two, cis male, he/him} || JACK TORRENCE is a mutant with the ability of ABSORPTION. they’ve been in new york for THIRTEEN YEARS where they spend most of their time as A BOUNCER AT THE CRIMSON VEIL / AN ESSEX ESCAPEE. when i think of them, i think of A JAW CLENCHED SO TIGHT IT MIGHT SNAP, DARK CIRCLES UNDER EYES, AND THE FEELING OF BEING WATCHED.
background.
originally born in chicago, IL, jack always felt like something was missing. at first, the idea was that it could be something physical—the presence of both parents, maybe—but over time he came to realize that the hole in his life wouldn’t, couldn’t, be filled by other people. the parents that existed in other kids’ lives seemed overbearing to the point of suffocation. friendships, companionship, was equally as unappealing—those around him were a constant, scathing reminder of his own feelings of being incomplete.
throughout adolescence that burning question stuck in his mind—what was missing? what was wrong with him?—but the pieces of the puzzle didn’t fall into place until he neared adulthood. it was a moment of intimacy; a hookup. skin to skin contact had become something of an obsession. one moment there was pleasure, and the next he was stealing something from them—something that, for a brief moment, seemed to start closing the genetic fissure that existed within him. finally, there was an answer. but his moment of relief ended as quickly as it had began, fear and pain cutting off the contact he needed to continue to siphon.
with it, marked the beginning of the end. his once-willing ostracization became considerably less so, and where there had been distant concerned there was now only fear. he knew what was wrong with him, but so too did everyone else—he was a mutant. with intimacy now out of reach, jack gave into aggression. after all, there was nothing he couldn’t have stolen through pleasure that he couldn’t also take through pain. fights became common. as the victor, he took an extra prize from those bold enough to tangle with him... in amounts that became increasingly dangerous for both parties.
at nineteen, things came to a head. he was arrested for attempted kidnappingtrying to secure a less fleeting source of biomass—and was originally set to be carted off to prison. a different opportunity presented itself. earlier that year, a facility that specialized in wayward ( troublesome ) mutants had opened. with the local establishment hopelessly outmatched to deal with the mutant problem, an arrangement was made—he would be sent to the essex house, instead. there, at least, he wouldn’t be in a position to harm anyone else.
the next twelve years was spent in a haze of agony and starvation. concoction after concoction, needle after needle, blade after blade—researchers wasted no time in extracting any secrets hiding in his frayed dna, testing the limits of his mutation in as painful a method as they could come up with. unwilling to let him feed on anyone they saw as ‘of worth’, his survival depended entirely on the course of experiments they performed... or on the other mutants that he was housed with.
when whispers of an escape reached him, he jumped at the opportunity without hesitation. after spending over a third of his life locked within the confines of the essex house, he was more than willing to risk life and limb on the chance of freedom.
quick facts.
got a job at a mutant-run establishment in the hopes that he wouldn’t have to try as hard to hide. and for an extra chance at more power. having spent the majority of his life making himself as unapproachable as possible, being hired as a bouncer felt appropriate.
currently unaffiliated, but sympathetic to the brotherhood and their goals.
something of a hoarder. after spending so long not actually owning anything, everything he gets seems a little bit more important...
always wears gloves, even when the weather’s nice, to keep unwanted contact to a minimum. last thing he needs is to go crazy go stupid in public. self control? he doesn’t know her...
bi. :)
possible connections.
fellow escapees. any of the ten that definitely know him. most likely a negative connection unless they’re a little twisted, but they all had to have spent time together at some point ( even if just at the facility ). could have been one of the mutants he relied on to keep himself alive, willingly or not.
coworkers. or other people that work nearby! could do a lot of different things with this, although he probably tries to avoid them outside of work. maybe he doesn’t succeed?
neighbors. maybe they think he’s annoying because the landlord keeps coming by to bang on his door and threatens eviction if he doesn’t get rid of all the shit he’s hoarding. maybe they peeked through his doorway and think it’s weird as all hell that there’s essentially no living space available because there’s so much ( semi-organized ) junk everywhere. or maybe none of those things; there’s tons of other dynamics of consider.
anything else idk. i’m open to whatever honestly!
