ā give me steel and flint and poison to whet my teeth upon, so that the transubstantiation of all these things bring me the swift hand of justice upon their throats. there will be wailing and gnashing and the horror dealt upon my hand for the crimes committed unto me this day. blood begets blood begets blood. ā
HISTORY.Ā (coming soon!)Ā CONNECTIONS. PINTEREST.
A SUMMARY OF EVENTS. (tw: gore, death.)
born to a long line of mutants, january is a woman whoās lived a long and healthy life with wealth and the love of a family that one could dare to dream of. her talents didnāt manifest until she was ten, making a tree that grew apples that tasted like her favorite ice cream.
technically a reality warper, january prefers to think of it as magic, given both the trial and error and the tedium that sheās learned to cope with through long nights and longer days. her familyās learned to teach her to harness her abilities, as well as amplify them, as all of them know how to deal with mutant abilities one way or another.
becoming a socialite in the new york scene, she meets a business executive on the rise when she was younger, and terribly in love, discloses her mutant identity to her, spending years on the arm of a savvy and handsome junior executive.
made to rig the markets in his favor, swing votes and even kill a few people for his job, sheās broken up with for a newer, prettier version years after he makes his big break, parting on seemingly amicable terms. that is, until she receives a wedding invite.
angry and vengeful, she uses her powers to kill his bride on the altar, and hounds him day and night until she finally gets her due.
currently, she enjoys the employ of anyone with enough money or enough intelligence to know what she does for a living. from mobsters, to politicians, to lovelorn people, to mutants seeking sanctuary, the wicked witch of the upper east side can help, if you know what to ask and what to give.

Cyra stays quiet a moment, then another as she contemplates the admittedly loose explanation Ms. Jones offers her. Eventually, a hand lifts to adjust the sunglasses over her eyes.Ā āSo.. Itās more like some kind, mutant-lead political PAC?ā A bob of her head indicates that sheās not exactly against that idea, and she continues saying as much.Ā āI suppose thatās not really a bad thing, hm?ā Only tedious thanks to the personalities of those in DC. āNot if we want to be seen as equals. Or at least, not as..ā Cyra hesitates, the corners of her mouth turning down. She turns to meet Januaryās face, her eyes still hidden behind her own sunglasses. āIs that the goal? To fix the reputation we have now thanks to that hateful group of terrorists?ā Though she keeps the ice from her voice, the question is asked point blank; her decision hanging on the answer.
A political action committee? God rest her soul, January St. James was no politician and while she contributed to lobbyists and activists, she wasnāt exactly one herself, but she puts on a nice look on her face and pauses.Ā āI donāt want you to get the wrong idea. This is simply... a club. Where we talk and drink and chat to other people about what we do with our money and our influence. Perhaps resort to the odd blackmail or so. Collectively.ā Santization. Just a little. She tucks a hair back into place and sighs.
āOur reputation isnāt going to be fixed. People will always hate mutants,ā she continues, walking astride with her.Ā āBut the goal is to play their game and to play it with such a clarity as to win. Give them scapegoats, give them technology, give them access to mutant healthcare, control them the way all these nations do.ā This is a clear day, a good day. And one that she dares to feel optimism about.Ā āThen, we take their outrageous sums of moneyāthe profit they love so much, and buy their banks. Their politicians and media and their little cultural attaches. We take it from the people who would do our children harm and render them impotent. Just like that. Like a fire with no oxygen.ā
āTell me, Mrs. De Leon, would you be party to this, or do I have to convince you further?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āthatās why you have other people to do the hitting for you.ā or a mutation, for that matter. what difference do charges make when she can wipe them from existence? but impulse is the last sense to adhered to when making a plan. regardless of any specific tricks, violence almost always came with consequences. hasnāt he learned that many times over?
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā he shrugs off the compliment, uncertain of it himself. growth ( or rather, change ) is enevitable, but he rejects the idea that heās been much different. he still worries for what essex has planned, even with an empire crumbling around him. he still sees those enemies in every direction he turns. maybe itās the fact that heās actually been proven right.Ā ānot enough,ā he ventures, instead of voicing any of that.Ā ābut iāll get there.ā
"Self-improvement. I can admire that.ā Thereās something in the air with him, a fear that January canāt quite place, but one thatās definitely a survivalistās bent than actual fear in his veins. The arrogance of her place here, in society, in the world of mutants has made her skin like steel, and if she can afford it? That steel may prove useful as a shield. Or a sword.
She drinks again, the burn on her tongue something that anchors her. A slight scald to keep the nerves.Ā āBut youāve been in fight or flight mode for too long; Essex is gone, and if you donāt rest after this? Youāre going to burn yourself out. Take a win. Punch a beloathed businessman.ā
Ā Ā Ā the woman had been right to be worried. a look was given and then her name was announced, drawing unwanted attention to her. she felt several eyes on her but looked down to avoid locking eyes with anyone else. the other woman had been so quick toĀ āgive her upā. emmeline didnāt deserve peace and quiet but this was becoming too normal - having people notice her and want to have a conversation about it all. her cowardice was warranted when it felt like she was stuck in a never-ending cycle. she would have to do something, anything to help but the urge to hide out at xavierās for as long as he would allow was weighing in her mind. xavier was going to reject her, that was clear, it was just a matter of when.
Ā Ā Ā Ā emmeline opened her mouth to respond but she wasnāt quick enough. the woman had already sat down opposite her. she could feel herself tense up, breathing slightly more shallow as the woman started with the questions.Ā āi donāt want to cause any more trouble.ā she shook her head as she finally looked at the other.Ā ākeep your voice down.ā she was a target and now with most people knowing who she was, she was even more vulnerable.Ā āi didnāt know it went that far.ā things looked rather different once you were out of something. she had been seen to enjoy hurting people during her employment at the house - those with little power were extremely dangerous when they were handed it over someone else.Ā āthereās no coming back.ā
"I donāt think I will, Miss Essex.ā Her voice is clear and dry, even as sheās seen with her. The woman who helped manufacture Jessā tortureāand found herself on the receiving end of it when all was said and done. Latent mutancy even in these circumstances, is pitiable. Sometimes, people go their whole lives without knowing they were special, and realize it a little too late. But January has no more pity for her, she thinks. The withered flower on the vine as she sits before her.
At the admission that thereās no coming back, January smiles wide.Ā āThatās certainly one patch of scorched earth weāre happy to let die, donāt you think?ā If someone sees her with Emmeline, itās not for connectionāsimply a warning.Ā āHave you heard that Brandt and Goetsch have disbanded?ā Her hand reaches for a cup of coffee thatās not there, appearing as if it was always in her hand as she takes a sip.Ā āAnd youāre almost the most famous woman on the East Coast. Do you have any plans you might think to take up?ā
Maxine: So, a mutant utopia? I'd find it hard to believe if co-existence is your endgame.
Maxine: And I suppose you're in charge of all the machinations, then? And we'd just be your Girl Scouts?
January: Why not? We're still going to be living with humanity. You think I'm just going to sweep all that aside because we're better?
January: Some of my favorite designers are human. Just some.
January: And forgive me, but I'm /not/ your mother, Miss Brandt. I can't hold your hand or look over your shoulder; you're independent thinkers. You do things you want.
January: I'm just there to make sure you all don't go do something stupid. Like kidnap civilians. Or lay siege to a school.

Maxine: It's fortunate that I've mastered the art of sitting still and looking pretty, then. I'd finally have something to thank my mother for.
Maxine: But you don't actually expect all of your members to be philanthropists, do you? I'm a tad bit rusty when it comes to good-doing.
January: Ha! Mutant-only private schools. No, Xavier has that down under lock.
January: No, noāI was thinking mutant legislation. Mutant businesses. Mutant art and culture. Mutants having a place in this world that humanity can't stain or take away.
January: And to be frank, Miss Brandt, I'd have to say that half of the people there are in it for the drinks and the bored humans and the simpering spouses.
January: Do bad, by all means. But try to do bad in a way that benefits the collective.
Maxine: A businesswoman *and* a homemaker. How impressive.
Maxine: I hope you're about to say something trivial, like tax evasion.
Maxine: Surprisingly, I've had enough of corporate espionage in my lifetime. And nothing's of use to me at the moment, anyway. I'm unemployed, if you haven't heard.
Maxine: Maybe that's why I've taken an interest in your lunch club. What *is* a woman to do when she has too much free time?
January: If pressed? Shake up the economy with a twitch of my nose. I've done it before with a nice dress and a nicer wig.
January: And the lunch club is mostly a guise. It's better for people to think we're stupid and rich, wasting our money with entertainment, companionship and drinks, rather than actually investing our time in something worthwhile.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā for now. itās more of a chance than jack would expect from january, even as gracious as sheās always been to him. and min-ji. and jess. and who knows how many others. āyouāre more tolerant than i ever could be,ā he admits, shaking his head. āand i donāt know how you do it. if thereās one thing worse than a prick, itās a rich prick.ā of course, given where sheās hitched her horse, jack has little doubt that she knows all about that.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ānot exactly looking,ā he answers, after a long moment of silence. and itās true. although it takes effort to remind himself at times, he doesnāt have the same need for unusual methods of contact, anymore. he has everything he needs sorted out. ābut if it makes things easier, or sinks a ship that needs sinkingā¦ā he trails off, shrugging. āi donāt lose any sleep over it.ā
"Darling, my family is old Boston money. I can hit them, but thatād just leave me with assault charges and wasted effort,ā she says blithely, rolling her eyes at the thought of it. Many have tried it with her, of course. Sometimes with her ex-mob ties, sometimes with the company she kept, but none of them ever stuck. A door to hell can make all the difference.
Taking a look at Jack, the level composure and the unnatural calmness that he exhibits. It was nary a Halloween before that he came to her scared out of his wits by Essex, with a knife in his shoulder and the thoughts of mercenaries running through his head.Ā āIām glad to hear that at least. You have certainly grown from the last time I saw you.ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ādonāt worry,ā he almost grunts, eyes shifting back toward the doorway; āheās gone. and if he knows whatās good for him, he wonāt be coming back.ā of course, thereās a small part of him that hopes he does. if january doesnāt take the time to mentally eviscerate him, jack will be perfectly happy to step in, instead. but he shouldnāt. he doesnāt need to, anymore. āiām assuming he doesnāt have any friends hanging around with him?ā
"Jack, these are rich pricks. It goes to show that the man has more money than sense, and Iām not going to throw him out after this, even if I do want to kill him. No, the humiliation is enough for now.ā The words ring true as the last two are dropped. For now.Ā āJust know that heās on my shit list. And itās hard to claw yourself back out from under that.ā
As for friends, she groans and conjures tea. Chamomile to soothe the nerves, just the way she likes it.Ā āHe doesnāt have friends, he has sycophants that practically get on their knees for him. Those ones? You can teach them a lesson, enough that they stop their fun.ā She takes a sip and scalds her tongue, the pain making her clench her jaw in aggravation.Ā āWhy? You looking to get a little rough with the suits in here?ā
Ā Ā Ā the other woman looked somewhat familiar but wasnāt sure where to place her. for someone that didnāt want to appear suspicious, a flighty emmeline shuffled uncomfortably in her seat and kept her head down. eyes flickered every once in a while in the other womanās direction. perhaps she hadnāt even been looking at her and her paranoia (sheād argue it was a cautious approach) had taken over; there was a pattern with smart looking individuals approaching her and attempting to bombard her with questions. she had grown to expectĀ it but it didnāt mean it was true. if anything, the way she was constantly looking at the other was enough to make anyone with no ill intentions uncomfortable.

Emmeline. It takes all of her willpower not to charge at the woman and drag her back to the office for interrogation and a private session with Jess, Jack and all their other friends. She doesnāt take kindly to any of Nathanielās kin, much less his traitorous mutant daughter. January imagines every horror and pain that sheās inflicted, and all she can do is give her a pointed, yet slight frown on her face. The most lethal of the expressions.
āEmmeline Essex.ā Her voice carries, and sure enough, a few patrons turn to look at her.Ā āMind if I sit with you?ā Itās an acknowledgement, not a question as she promptly goes to sit down with her.Ā āI hear that public coverage of Essex House hasnāt been good as of late. How has that been?āĀ
"Volatile little cretināheās lucky that his money is being funneled by an agent inside or I would have flayed him with my mind.ā A light shimmer appears near her, the folds of reality agitated by her mood.Ā āJack. Tell me heās left the premises.ā
"On a journalistās salary? I think not. Treat it as a gift, from someone who has a vested interest in print media.ā Closing the portal behind them, she signals to the maitreād, and leads him to her favorite spot in the whole restaurant. Notice is paid to the both of them, even during a busy day, eyes of several people within the vicinity wandering the both of them.
As menus are presented and brought to them, she smiles at the service staff, and sets it down. She already knows what she wants, and even so, what she wants more is an ear within the news.Ā āYou know, Iāve met media moguls and hard-nosed reporters, and I have the strong sense that you wonāt simply let this go,ā she says, eyes trained on him.Ā āHow was the coverage of the riots, Mister Patton? Of the debacle at 46th and Bergen? At Xavierās?ā
"Listen. I have had experience with the papers, and a well written word can be kind or kill just as quickly.ā Mayoral campaigns, ruining a socialite with rumor and one fatal scandal involving her old flame and his bride. January knows how the papers can help, and with the public outlook on mutants at a low thanks to Erikās well-intentioned terrorism, she wants to spin the pro-mutant angle as quickly as possible.Ā āYour articles have an impact. Donāt sell yourself short just yet.ā
Opening a portal, just to beat the traffic, she gestures to the side of the walls as if it was normal. As if it wasnāt the interior of Du Ciel.Ā āAfter you then. Good thing I had reserved a table. And that Iām a good enough tipper that an additional person isnāt a complication.ā

Solomon Ofori. Itās a powerful name, one that inspires respect and awe even without meeting him. Tiffany will remember it for sure. Sheāll remember this for sure, whatever happens. Thereās always been a vague horizon of hope in her heart that sheāll develop a mutation, but itās been tempered by an impending sense that itāll never really happen. It doesnāt remotely feel real that sheās the one able to control this floating piece of paper right now.
āDo you really believe that?ā she asks softly, chewing her lip and regarding Jan earnestly. āOr are you just saying it? That it could be permanent, I mean.ā
Do you really believe that? Well, January knows that it isnāt out of the realm of possibility, but with Tiffany barely lifting a piece of paper? Itās only a matter of time until either she or the power gives. At least she did give her a disclaimer about all of this; it wouldnāt do well to be advertised as a woman that canāt do the impossible.
āI do,ā she says, a small smile on her face. A reassuring pat on the shoulder. January vaguely remembers something like this, these small white lies to herself, just to edge the day on. Wine on her breath, a ruined heart. Well, these things can help Tiffany along, if the mutation Solomon had given her wasnāt exactly suited to her body.Ā āThis may not be a natural mutation, but now? It is yours. And I believe that if you train hard enough, the odds of rejection will be slim.ā Small reassurances. Not lie or truth, but plain reassurance.
āNow,ā she says, floating the paper back up to her, āOnce again, with feeling. Focus on the paper.ā
Cyra blinks, then blinks again before slowly accepting the presentedĀ physical invitation. It hadnāt been there a moment ago, had it? Sheās sure she wouldnāt have missed it. An impressed smile spreads wide over her features at the show of clear skill, and she canāt contain the light chuckle that bubbles up out of her throat.Ā āDorian Gray?ā Her eyebrows raise with the question, her tone clearly still amused.Ā āWell now youāve definitely got my attention.ā She flips the fancy cardstock between her fingers, examining each side before looking back up at Ms. Jones through her long lashes.Ā āBut is it a party or a club?ā It doesnāt matter, really. She likes both.
"Both,ā she says, a little blithely. While the meetings were few and far between the heads and the inner circle, she at least knew of a lot of good party organizers and old tricks learned as she spent her time in high society. It isnāt exactly fun, catering to the whims and interests of moguls and politicians, but if a good time is all they need for the bills and the infrastructure she needs, January isnāt someone who skips out on a good deal.Ā āIt also is a place where you can enter business deals that will focus on mutant-centric marketing. To funneling cash into helpful legislation. To backdoor benefits for mutants,ā And to well-timed assassinations that further their cause.Ā āAnd Iād be remiss if I didnāt invite you, Mrs. De Leon. Or someone with your power.ā
