Bear Detection and Chase Canines in Hokkaido Japan
This is from an article by Amanda Parry Von Darcor Kennels, Queensland in the Working German Shepherd and DogSport Clubs Australia Winter 2018 magazine (page 16-17)
That size difference! That is a one year old german shepherd alongside a working highcontent wolf-hybrid. Here is some snippets of context from the article:
Doctor’s Yuh Iguchi and Yuri Karatachi from the Japanese Canine Bear Detection and Chase Program approached (Von Darcor kennels) for the supply of a developed German Shepherd Dog to join their current Bear Detection and Chase Team of working highcontent wolf-hybrids.
Vondarcor Oxzsa was to be and is developed to assist allocated Handlers of community Bear Patrol Teams in the detection, chase and if required, engagement of Brown Bears in the community, on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. In February 2018, at 11 months of age, Oxzsa flew to Japan where she joined her Handler and his two other working canines – high content wolf-hybrids (97%).
The Canine Bear Detection and Chase Program is an intervention program to promote the coexistence between Japanese communities and bear populations residing on the edges of mountains and forestry, with strong emphasis on bear conservation and preservation of human life. The objective of the Japanese Bear Detection Dogs, is to detect, track, alert and chase Bears out of townships, and attempt to significantly reduce the incidents of human and Bear interaction, conflict and subsequent deaths of both people and Bears.
Initially high content wolf hybrids were engaged for their size and natural hunting instincts. The problems being encountered by Handlers and Trainers include the high aloofness, lower work ethic (attributed to domestication and select breeding) and lower trainability in the wolves, and their dependence of the pack, hindering the success of the program. While wolves are still very much a part of the program, the objective is to lower the wolf content to dog content ratio and increase the trainability, work ethic and independence in work. German Shepherd Dogs are the select breed of dog for the program for their balance, higher trainability, drives and nerve, and are slowly being introduced to the canine teams.
You can get updates and see more photos of Oxzsa as they are sent to her old kennel on facebook.

The data collected will tell us a lot about how people perceive breeds and mixes, how different breed mixes affect the appearance of a dog, how well people can guess their canine friends’ ancestries from looks alone, and how that might affect our lives with dogs. This information is vital to many future projects throughout the scientific world.
About The Project
Darwin’s Dogs, a project of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, and U-Mass Medical School, has been conducting ancestry research on thousands of dogs, analyzing DNA saliva samples to tell us the genetic history of our canine companions.
In conjunction with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), the team is launching a “citizen science” survey. The data collected will tell us a lot about how people perceive breeds and mixes, how different breed mixes affect the appearance of a dog, how well people can guess their canine friends’ ancestries from looks alone, and how that might affect our lives with dogs. This information is vital to many future projects throughout the scientific world.
How To Participate
The survey will introduce you to 31 mutts. You’ll be asked to guess the 3 breeds contributing the largest percentage of DNA for each dog.
Only the answers to the “practice survey” will be given at this time. This is real science, and we need to be sure everyone’s giving their best guesses without influence or hints from others.
At the end of the research period of 60 days, each participant will be sent a certificate of participation and the answers to what makes up each of these wonderful mutts.

Thank you for your contributions to the citizen science that makes Darwin’s Dogs one of the most important research initiatives today!
Embark dog DNA test - Frenzi wants to share her results with you!
Here is something really, really fascinating! A legitimate coydog has now been Embark tested, and with her owner’s permission I’m sharing the link here. Frenzi was a stray picked up on the streets of Texas, just outside of Longview. She was placed through Texas Wolfdog Rescue, to my understanding. She was suspected to be a true F1 mid content coydog.
From what we see of her chromosome breakdown, one parent was mostly coyote with some GSD genes, the other a low content wolfdog with northern breeds, GSD, and golden retriever. Now, whether that means one parent was an upper content coydog, or an eastern coyote who naturally had some dog genes, is up to interpretation :P
Here’s some more photos of her.

We don’t deserve dogs.
I went to a presentation that showed by thousands of years of breeding we’ve bred a bit of our own selves into dogs and made them the most human companions of man.
“Always check to make sure your dog is engaged before starting your session, and before moving on to a new repetition. Is your dog excited by the reward? Does he focus on working as soon as the reward is finished? If not – you have to address that first. All other training has to stop while you figure out why the dog isn’t engaged. Is he scared? In pain or discomfort? Is something too distracting? Is the reward not reinforcing enough? Are you putting pressure on the dog without realizing it? Fix the problem or change the environment before doing any other training.”

Martin was really into training ready to work rituals with Bosco. Bosco clearly signals to me that he’s ready to work at the beginning of a session and I love that.
