Of course Penelope would be the one to notice that he hasn’t slept in days. Sometimes he wondered if the rest of the team chose to ignore their off days, or if the they took the “no profiling a team member” to another level. Regardless, he was grateful that she had been the only one to question his unkempt appearance. 

Lucille looked at the other woman with great disbelief written all over her face. Surely, she must have misunderstood, Raffi couldn’t have just confessed she felt the same way she did, right? Oh, but the way she was looking at her, how could she possibly think it was a lie? “You do?” Had she really been so blind as not to see it or had Raffi just been that good at hiding it? Maybe both. “Say it again, chérie. Please.” Maybe hearing it one more time would finally make it real.

Raffi subconsciously traced her thumb across the other’s raised cheek bone as she spoke in disbelief. It took everything in her not to just kiss Lucille right then and there. “I.. I love you.” She felt herself leaning in closer to the woman’s lips. Lips she imagined were soft, loving, and passionate. The unspoken question was in her eyes as she held the other’s gaze.

… Maybe he just hasn’t had a guest in too long. Maybe it’s paranoia. Why would she be familiar? What are the chances of that happening, anyway? He wanted a drink but with a client on board, it was way too early for that and unprofessional, even if she wasn’t out here, even if it was just to take the edge off. So he settled for a hot mug of coffee, as black as the empty void of space outside their windows, and he took a sip of the burning-hot liquid as he sat down to confirm their route and check his communications with Vulcan.

“It’s no bother at all,” Steward replied. “I live to serve. Well, exist,” he said with a smile. “It’s been a while since we’ve had a guest and it’s nice to actually get to do my job. The captain… Doesn’t have much use for hospitality for himself.” At least, not in ways where they’d actually see each other.

Despite just wanting to lock herself away in the guest room to avoid everyone on this ship, she closed her eyes for a moment to think about what Steward said. She found herself finding the other’s face again, “If you would like to show me around.. or even just.. chat, I suppose that’s what I’m here for until you all drop me off.” 

             ✧ –  ✧ –   At his jab, Avyra scrunched her nose up, glaring at him. “Hey! I weigh enough!” However, at this point, she wasn’t sure if she herself was telling the truth. It was difficult to think.

            “I guess you’re just special. I bet Cris couldn’t pick me up. I’d be too much.” She puffed out her chest proudly at this fact. Well, fact in her mind.

Emil laughed at Avyra’s defensiveness. “Sure, you weigh enough for your height.” He subconsciously traced his fingers along her arm as the continued to jokingly bicker.

“You think he couldn’t? I don’t want to crush your dreams, Av, but I’m sure almost everyone can pick you up.” 

                      ✧ –  ✧ –   “Huh.” Kelsier was trying to piece all this together. Of course, he’d never been dull or slow. He was already beginning to understand that getting back home wouldn’t be as easy as how he got here.

                         “I see.” He paused. “Then we should try to figure out where I go, though I do apologize. I don’t think I’ll be much help, unfortunately. Honestly the concept of other worlds is… one we have never explored.”

Enoch nodded in understanding, “You wouldn’t believe how many times Cris has gotten himself in similar situations to yours.” He giggled a bit when he thought about it and how disgruntled he’d been over it all.

“I’m sure if we all work together we can figure something out.” 

the fic in which Dean admits that he loves Cas too.

“I love you.”

The words bounced around Dean’s skull, though they weren’t harsh. It wasn’t something that would give him a headache; it was more like the echo of what could have been. A melancholy tune that left him reeling on the floor, tears pooled in his eyes. Why hadn’t he said it back? It felt like he’d been on the floor mourning his best friend for years as he stared at his ringing cell once more. The first time he’d looked, it hadn’t registered who was calling him. In all honesty, it was the last thing he could focus on. Not when Castiel had just.. no. He couldn’t wallow in this forever. On the fourth call, he answered, voice hollow, “Hello?” His voice didn’t even feel as though it had belonged to him. It nearly surprised him.

On the other line Sam was frantic, but simultaneously grateful that his brother hadn’t actually disappeared just as the rest of the world had. “Dean! Dean, thank god, I-“ his voice cracked and he took a moment to compose himself. Dean was alright, but he didn’t sound like himself and he’d never answered the phone before with a simple “hello.”

“Everyone is gone, Dean. Is.. Is Cas-?” Before the statement could even fully pass his lips, he was interrupted by Dean.

“He.. He’s gone too.” As he spoke the words he’d been wishing weren’t true, the tears finally fell from his eyes. It was hard to grasp the entirety of the situation at hand and he certainly didn’t understand why Sam was so worried or how he knew.

Sam inhaled deeply as tears filled his own eyes. He was exhausted and so very done with loss. He didn’t want to lose anyone and he sure as hell didn’t want to have to deal with a bored God anymore. He glanced at a suspicious Jack and smiled at him. He hoped to quell the kid’s worry, but it was unlikely after everything they’d been through.

Before speaking, he cleared his throat, “That’s- He wasn’t supposed to, I don’t understand.” He turned away from Jack, unable to completely hide his emotional response.

Dean looked down at his legs before letting out a sob, “I didn’t get to tell him that I loved him too, Sammy. He doesn’t know.” He wished more now than he ever had, that he could turn back time, if only to tell Cas how long he’d loved him. He had a hell of a way of showing it, but with growing up the way he did, he was sure that Castiel would’ve understood. He didn’t want the angel to think that all this time, after everything they’d been through.. that this love was unrequited. If the older Winchester was being honest with himself, it was reciprocated with such a ferocity it scared him, and now it was too late for their beginning. Instead it had been the end of something that could’ve been so much more than it was.

Sam’s eyebrows raised in recognition, “Oh, Dean..” He sighed, understanding now why there was so much pain and emptiness behind his usual tone. The only sound between the two of them for a few moments were the other man’s unsuccessfully contained sobs.

“You will be able to tell him. We always find a way.” Sam was a bit skeptical with his own reassurance, but he attempted not to let that escape through his practiced calm tone.

Dean shook his head before chuckling incredulously, “I really hope so, Sam. This time was too much.” Knowing that Castiel loved him, made this death more unbearable than any other that he’d experienced. He really hoped that Sam was right and that they could fix everything this time. He couldn’t live like this.

“Jack and I will be there soon, hang tight.” With that, Sam hung up the phone and guided Jack away.
