marina is just a tragedy as an artist tbh. idk maybe it’s just be being really influenced by public opinion but these last two albums are just so off. on both l+f and adiaml there’s these sublime moments of grace and wisdom but then you look at the whole album cohesively and there’s…nothing. they feel unfinished almost. family jewels, electra heart, and froot all seemed like whole worlds in themselves. and i know the problem isn’t her producing it herself because froot didn’t have this problem! her first three albums had unique sounds and there was no song that felt like it didn’t fit or was half finished.

it’s so frustrating and i don’t wanna speculate or whatever but it honestly makes me feel she must have some kind of private struggle happening behind the scenes. the fixation on politics and trying to encompass all the struggles of humanity in one three minute song (or multiple if we’re looking at both albums) reads to me like someone extremely preoccupied with pain due to a great personal burden of it. maybe that’s just be projecting. i just can’t get out of my head how emaciated she looked in the purge the poison photoshoot.

literally how does love and fear have soft to be strong, too afraid, to be human, and then stuff like…true and you? how does ancient dreams have both its title track and then highly emotional people and pandora’s box? it’s so weird to market your album as this political chaos manifesto and do a collab with PUSSY RIOT of all artists and then when you look at all the non singles on the album it’s like ‘men get sad’ ‘my boyfriend didn’t buy me flowers’ ‘i acted like a mother to this guy’. after the pussy riot collab i was expecting her to have a song about throwing molotovs or something but no we get piano ballads about what sounds like a really mundane breakup. the whole thing is so incohesive and weird and because you have those songs on the same album as the political stuff it makes your political commitments seem hollow and clickbaity. like you couldn’t stop talking about yourself for ONE ALBUM?? also it’s not even interesting commentary on interesting relationships. it’s boring as fuck lyrically and in terms of sound and production and everything. why the hell did she not keep the sound the same as the singles?? it’s like she gave up after the singles. why is taylor swift actually better than marina now? why am i more excited for rereleased taylor swift songs??

i totally agree with the sentiment of adiaml feeing incomplete, i think she really rushed to put it out when it could have used some more time in the oven, and unsure of the exact reasoning she felt she had to release it so soon after l+f, but i’d guess it had to do with knowing how insincere l+f was to her entire being. but i have GOT to say that marina will never stop singing about herself and her personal life for an album. that’s part of her art. it’s for her more than anything, we even got things like lies, hypocrates, and fear & loathing in electra heart that we’re obviously close to home. to ask her to solely focus on politics would be completely against her beliefs regarding her art.

she has such a big interest in sociology and psychology that she tries to channel in works like adiaml, to be human, savages, etc. but they offer come across disconnected from the soul of her work or skin deep on the subject being breached - savages especially, but that was really like a first attempt delving further into psychology for her. to be human and adiaml had a much better approach. i’m really glad she’s continuing to explore these thing on a bigger scale with this album, but i could never expect her to completely negate her personal moments for them.TLDR;

TLDR; adiaml was probably rushed in in attempt to take back control over her creativity and career, and in her life post-toxic relationship. i do think she tried hard and did some fantastic work, but she needed it out in the world asap to feel some healing. i expect even better and more truly marina work to come. ❤️
