caden already made a great point with this knowledge (rice’s IP contains its own killswitch lol and rolin & co were never onto something) but truly everything ive heard about the vampire lecrap has soured what i found remarkable about the first two seasons. now the litany of antiblack violence that was actually on-screen has proven to be in service of a fundamentally broken premise (up-cycling anne rice’s white supremacist imagination) and everyone who cared about the black characters rattling around in that doomed experiment are left with a very ugly and very familiar feeling

step 1: acquire rights to racist franchise

step 2: to remedy the racism in the source material, make most main characters present in book 1 poc, except the main antagonist

step 3: create some of the most beautifully complex characters and competent writing tv has seen in the past decade

step 4: main antagonist of book one is protagonist of the rest of the series, everyone else getting flattened by his pov and shoved by the wayside

step 5: you now have a racist franchise

i think they shot themselves in the foot with changing louis/claudia/armand's race/ethnicity and writing them SO WELL in the first two seasons, bc they KNEW s3 was going to be a LestatFest..... they even went as far to say that they went into everything with the desire to adapt tvl so its kind of like. the optics are terrible.....

that being said i wouldnt change the iwtv seasons for the world but they couldve found a way for tvl to be less... well. lestat-y.....

like it worked SO WELL in the first two seasons because it was a beautiful complex inspired take on the canon... those changes enriched the narrative

but in s3 it just.. its all for nothing!! its lestat time! and it clashes so hard on so many levels BECAUSE once lestats character takes over theres no room for anyone.... and it wouldntve been so bad had the first two seasons not established a level of richness that lestat (book or show) simply cannot support on his own

okay this is really fascinating to me bc I feel like what they're each picking up from each other is "this woman fails to meet the standards of hetero womanhood" - none of them look like the lead of a romcom, none of them look like an instagram model. passing each other on the street they won't look that closely, but when scrutinizing the image, they pick up on these "failures" and interpret them as deliberately signaling disinterest in male attraction. the secret of course is that no one can meet these standards because they're fake; instagram models and movie actresses are staged and edited.

of course the creator probably got some "straight" responses and edited them out but it's interesting right? that wearing a leopard print top or being the "wrong" body shape pings whatever passes for a gaydar on straight people? that women in t-shirts without a full face of makeup are not performing enough femininity to be "real (straight) women"? the unprompted transvestigation is not unrelated from the distinction of who is a real straight woman.
