Re: Lestat's passivity in this season—I think it's also frustrating because yes, Lestat getting away with things he logically shouldn't is such a massive part of his character in the books, and this aspect could potentially add context to the conflicts between him and Louis in Season 1. Lestat is repeatedly frustrated by Louis remaining cautious and bound by what Lestat sees as mortal social norms, which is of course informed by their respective races and social contexts. To be clear, Lestat is consistently unwilling to work to understand Louis's position and his concerns, despite Louis's quite considerate attempts to explain, which is racist and inexcusable. But there was a chance for this season to examine why Lestat sees himself as so invincible and why he thinks he (and vampires as a whole by extension) are above any sort of rules: he takes down Armand's centuries-old coven; he's irrationally convinced that Marius is still alive despite all evidence to the contrast and turns out to be right; he defies Marius when it comes to Akasha but that turns out fine for him; and so on. By characterizing Lestat as passive and unwilling to really challenge others (both mortals and vampires), the show makes his behavior in Season 1 harder to explain.
