Now thatâs how you ally. Thatâs putting it on the line and showing solidarity. Thatâs how you use your white privilege for good.
âItâs nice to go out and march, we can do that. Itâs nice to wear black at the Golden Globes, but what are you doing behind closed doors?â - Jada Pinkett Smith
Itâs easily one of the cleanest examples of intersectional feminism Iâve seen in a minute. Itâs the polar opposite of white feminism, where white women are concerned primarily with the wellbeing and advancement of other white women. If more white men and women stood up and demanded basic fairness instead of just talking about itâand not just in Hollywoodâwe might really begin to impact racism and close the pay gap that always gets inflicted upon black people in most careers.
I also love that quote from Chastain: âMen should start doing this with their female costars.âÂ
Men should start doing this, period.
Timeâs up. Itâs time for everyone to start stepping up. Use whatever privilege you have to help others who have been systematically marginalized because of some unchangeable aspect of who they are.
Inmates in three NY prisons can no longer receive donated books in the mail from family and community groups. They have to buy books from state-approved vendors with a limited selection.
Instead of inmates being able to receive donated books in the mail from family members and community groups, inmates at three New York prisons now have to purchase books selected by six, state-approved vendors. And the selection is limited. And expensive, activists say.
Novels cost $11.25 from one vendor.
A book about chess costs $29.95 from another.
And about a quarter of the titles are coloring books.
According to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the directive is in an effort to restrict contraband from entering the prison âthrough a more controlled inmate package program.â
Gov. Andrew Cuomoâs office has made the point that inmates still have access to prison libraries, but some say itâs not enough. âThe problem with prison libraries is that [the prisons] control who has access to them,â said Amy Peterson with NYC Books Through Bars. âSo people who are in solitary confinement donât have access to prison libraries.â
Petersonâs group has been mailing books to prisoners all over the country for nearly two decades, with a focus on New York. âWe get letters from people saying they had to borrow a stamp in order to write to us. So if these people canât even afford postage, we donât know how theyâre going to be able to afford buying books from a vendor,â she said.

From the NY Daily News:
Over the past several days, inmate advocates pointed out that the vendors combined offered only five romance novels, 14 religious texts, 24 drawing or coloring books, 21 puzzle books, 11 how-to books, one dictionary, and one thesaurus.
âNo books that help people learn to overcome addictions or learn how to improve as parents. No Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, Maya Angelou, or other literature that helps people connect with what it means to be human. No texts that help provide skills essential to finding and maintaining work after release from prison. No books about health, about history, about almost anything inside or outside the prison walls,â advocacy group Books Behind Bars complained in a letter to the governor.
Actions you can take that Iâve found so far:
Sign this petition from the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee
Send postcards to Gov. Cuomo and Acting Prison Commissioner Annucci
Leave a message about it at Gov. Cuomoâs office (you can follow the script from the postcard link):Â 518-474-8390

republicans switched specifically because they saw how single minded racist Southerners were and realized they could get them to vote for any republican so long as part of their platform oppressed minorities. and itâs not even up for debate like âtrickle down economicsâ, they called it the Southern Strategy and it is probably the single greatest key to their success to this day.

I. Love this.Â
Love it.
Oh my god
yes.
This is it, I found it, the funniest post on this entire godsforsaken website
The boomers inherited a rich, dynamic country and have gradually bankrupted it. They habitually cut their own taxes and borrow money without any concern for future burdens. Theyâve spent virtually all our money and assets on themselves and in the process have left a financial disaster for their children. Â Â We used to have the finest infrastructure in the world. The American Society of Civil Engineers thinks thereâs something like a $4 trillion deficit in infrastructure in deferred maintenance. Itâs crumbling, and the boomers have allowed it to crumble. Our public education system has steadily degraded as well, forcing middle-class students to bury themselves in debt in order to get a college education.
How the baby boomers â not millennials â screwed America (via wilwheaton)
Babies are strapped into airplane seats enroute to LAX during âOperation Babyliftâ with airlifted orphans from Vietnam to the US. April 12, 1975.
This looks dangerous as fuck đ
ikr? I was thinking how they would not have been secure if the plane crashed only to find out that one of the planes in the operation did crash.
what?!
Most of the babies taken to the United States by âOperation Babyliftâ were not orphans in the first place; they were children from refugee camps who were fraudulently designated as orphans by American relief workers â most of them with religious affiliations â who believed theyâd be âbetter offâ being raised by white Americans.
Operation Reunite is an amazing nonprofit run by Babylift victims which seeks to use DNA testing to find and reconnect with their real families back home in Vietnam.
So basically look at this photo of kidnapped babies.
This is absolutely insane, why have I never heard of Operation Babylift?
We all know why.
White people never knew how to act smh
I feel like this could be anything.
Take your meds. Flip off that asshole. Be unapologetically loud and brash. Love with your whole being.

Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa with her daughter Billie Lourd as Lieutenant Kaydel Ko Connix and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair.
This is a common refrain among the new generation of Star Wars actors: that Fisher was the one who taught them how to deal. Boyega recalled that when there was a backlash against his appearance in the first Force Awakens teaser trailer, released in November 2014âthe sight of a black man in stormtrooper armor drew ire from racists and doctrinaire Star Wars traditionalistsâFisher counseled him not to take it to heart. âI rememberâand forgive me, Iâm going to drop the f-bomb, but thatâs just Carrieâshe said, âAh, boohoo, who fuckinâ cares? You just do you,âââ he said. âWords like that give you strength. I bore witness in a million ways to her sharing her wisdom with Daisy too.â
The Stanford prison experiment tapes were so stupid when I watched them in AP psych and so stupid when I watch this film about them. Literally they couldâve all sat and played cards and got $15 a day to tell ghost stories all day and be best friends. But masculinity and whiteness and power created this violent irrationality that positioned young ass men to be met with brutality and trauma and disrespect even when it was obviously taken too far. and it makes no sense. If someone put me in a room with Black girls and said I would get paid $90 a day (thatâs the equivalent apparently) to be a prison guard, do you know how fast Iâd be sitting with them and learning about them and exchanging Instagrams and like.. sleeping.. like what the fuck was the point of any of thatâŚ
My psych teacher introduced us to this study and literally before she showed us was like âdonât ever confuse a study based on one type of person (white men/boys) to be an example of an Everyman situation. There is strong evidence that if this was recreated with diversity, or even just with girls, that the results would have been drastically different. This is an example of bias and sexism in the medical research community.â
âOther, more subtle factors also shaped the experiment. Itâs often said that the study participants were ordinary guysâand they were, indeed, determined to be ânormalâ and healthy by a battery of tests. But they were also a self-selected group who responded to a newspaper advertisement seeking volunteers for âa psychological study of prison life.â In a 2007 study, the psychologists Thomas Carnahan and Sam McFarland asked whether that wording itself may have stacked the odds. They recreated the original ad, and then ran a separate ad omitting the phrase âprison life.â They found that the people who responded to the two ads scored differently on a set of psychological tests. Those who thought that they would be participating in a prison study had significantly higher levels of aggressiveness, authoritarianism, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and social dominance, and they scored lower on measures of empathy and altruism.â http://www.newyorker.com/science/maria-konnikova/the-real-lesson-of-the-stanford-prison-experiment
The thing about this study is that whether or not itâs generalizable to the public is debatable at best.
But itâs certainly generalizable to the population of people who tend to be drawn to prison system and law enforcement jobs because thatâs exactly the demographics that tend to show up in those positions.
