“Thank you for, uh… explaining the schedule.”
I love this scene.
*nervous sigh* “Uhhh… this weekend, we get to go… home.”
And he literally just stares at Simon as if he’s supposed to understand all that he’s implying with that one sentence. Simon is not quite picking up on his meaning, so he nervously continues:
“Ya know, ‘cause um, after lunch tomorrow the parents stay for a bit and then, uh……. *nervous sigh* on Friday, they take their kids and go home… *hard swallow* for the weekend.” *continues to stare at Simon, willing him to pick up what he’s throwing down*
I absolutely believe at this point, Simon is beginning to understand what Wille is trying to say and his, “Thank you for, uh… explaining the schedule” is intended to be slightly dismissive and a little sarcastic. He is, after all, still harboring some hard feelings over Wille wanting to forget about their kiss. His words are also tinged with confusion because, as far as Simon knows, that’s still how Wille feels.
Simon has no interest in playing games so he begins to walk away. I fully believe his intention is to make Wille just come out and say exactly what he means, exactly what he wants. No more being cryptic; if you want me to stay with you this weekend, you’re just gonna have to say it. This is Simon’s confidence at play; knowing his worth and what he deserves.
I do think Wille is really trying here but he’s so nervous and he’s never done anything like this before. He’s never told someone what he wants and been met with a positive response. He’s also essentially admitting his feelings for Simon to Simon and he’s scared. “I mean, almost no one else is going to be here then.” He’s still not being clear enough and his words are met with what basically boils down to “what’s your point?”
Wille finally finally summons to courage to say what he means. “If I were to stay here… would you… like to keep me company?” And I ADORE that he adds, “just you and me” to the end of that statement. Because asking Simon to keep him company could be interpreted as a bit ambiguous, but adding that it would be just the two of them, alone, communicates pretty well that this would be more than just friends hanging out.
Huge respect to Simon who flat out asks, “what happened to we should forget about it?” He’s not going to sweep that under the rug. That one statement by Wille is the entire reason they haven’t spoken for days. He deserves an answer.
Then, confidently: “I take it back.”
And their smiles. So sweet. So beautiful. So happy.
I think this scene is a perfect analogy for Wilhelm finally finding his voice and having it validated. His wants and needs have never really mattered to the people around him. But they matter to Simon. Wille’s realization of this, in this moment, is just beautiful.
