Realized I never posted this. Cooked so hard to make it an art print
Why fight for one baddie when they can all kiss
Come with me. Where? To the Emerald City!
You're beautiful.
there's something disingenuous about the claim that "Fiyero didn't even ask Elphaba what SHE wanted" before insisting that he would go away with her.
For starters, Elphaba is clearly visibly shocked, but not in an annoyed way (like some may claim). If she didn't want him to accompany her, she would've said that. That scene and subsequently the beginning of ALAYM brings Elphaba back to "I'm Not that Girl." If anything, she reads as shocked and confused but not quite hopeful because:
(Don't wish, don't start. Wishing only wounds the heart)
Also, if we really want to be real, part of why she isn't hopeful is because she did ask someone to come with her before.. and they didn't.
Even in Part I, Elphaba talks about feeling a "rush of joy" and how she sees him as someone she can fall for. ALAYM is such an underrated scene because while some view Elphaba's distance as a "lack of chemistry" it reads as uncertainty/nervousness and holding yourself back because you've been rejected before. There's longing because she's been on her own and this is a level of closeness that she hasn't experienced in years.
Fiyero comes over to the mirror (framed by WW caricatures of her) and removes her war outfit, so that she is just Elphaba. Cynthia has said that was her making herself even more vulnerable because she hasn't been seen like this by anyone. Fiyero looks around the room with both awe at what she's made for herself but also empathy -- seeing how she has the hate propaganda of herself hanging everywhere. Then, he immediately affirms that she is beautiful (I'm not even going to get into the misinterpretation of that line. But if I said that seeing things in a different way was what led to "not through your eyes, through theirs" I'm the bad guy). While she's attempting to make herself small both by creating physical distance and also dropping her head shyly, Fiyero is following her and keeping his eyes on her face - trying to sustain eye contact- even getting on his knees at one point to do so. So that she can see the sincerity of his words and his care for her.
(somehow I've fallen under your spell) is him teasing, trying to get her to smile. The latter half of the song, Elphaba is lighter - she looks behind her as she walks outside and stretches out her hand to Fiyero - knowing that he is following. She is so overcome with emotions that she lifts them and he doesn't even notice at first because he's so intently searching her face. He's not scared; he's in awe.
Even the next morning, Elphaba asks if she will see him again because the girl has consistently not had anyone stay for her. She has been used for and by people in her life -- to take care of her sister and fix Nessa's Boq situation, as well as for her magic and proximity to MM's mentorship. I love the eye contact in this scene when he reassures her that they will be together always (because I get the feeling that he knows it will take time for her to fully believe that he isn't leaving or that he won't change his mind).
Also, I feel like people from both main ships compare whether or not she believed she was beautiful at which moment -- I firmly believe that it was neither because that will take time for her. Though, Fiyero's was impactful for her because she doesn't immediately run away from it and when they reunite, she remembered his words and paralleled them when he needed to hear it.

Does anyone else ever think about how Fiyeraba, at its core, asks and answers two of the most classical story questions about unconditional love? The handsome, charming prince wonders if his partner would still want to be with him if he didn't have the trappings of his status and title. The misunderstood, wrongfully vilified young woman wonders if her partner would stand by her, even at great personal cost and against the entire world. And for both of them, the answer is an immediate and resounding "YES, of course, what even is this question."
Because I do.

The Misogynist Writing for Belly Conklin
I find the writing for Belly this season very disappointing. Her volleyball career was given zero spotlight despite her getting injured and having to find a different path. All we know about her interest in sports psychology is from a throwaway line in the first episode. Her interest in Paris? Due to Susannah’s influence. Her friendship with Anika and her group in Paris? Non existence and ultimately irrelevant. We know more about everyone else’s goals for the future than our protagonist. We don’t know when she graduates, we don’t know why sports psychology fascinated her and we never saw how being injured impacted her mentally. Jenny claims this is a coming of age story but she isn’t interested in Belly as an individual. And this is further confirmed by what she stated in an interview:
She states that Belly’s core, who she is as a human being, is loving Conrad.
First of all, this is ridiculous after we had Taylor tell Jeremiah that Belly shouldn’t be his whole word (which was correct). But it’s somehow okay for Belly to do the same with Conrad? Her loving Conrad to the point of leaving nothing for herself (which was stated by her) was ultimately a good thing? Because her core is loving him?
This explains why her character is so male centered. Her life revolves around the Fisher boys. And despite Paris being portrayed as a growth arc for her, she decides at the end that she never actually changed or did anything wrong because she followed her heart. We watch her kick out Conrad out of her apartment but she only changes her mind after she sees a picture of herself at 6 years old. She concludes that just like she has brown hair and brown eyes, she also loves Conrad. This is the biggest teen show of the 2020s and it’s pushing a misogynist narrative. There’s no self love for a character whose core is only loving a man.
The idea that she isn’t Belly unless she loves Conrad is concerning. Why is she only herself if she is tied to a man? The idea that she spent years lying to herself and lost because she wasn’t with a man who treated her poorly is a terrible message to send. She’s portraying Belly as someone whose words can’t be trusted and someone who simply doesn’t understand herself. But wait, it’s okay because a man, who she has barely spoken to in 5 years, somehow knows her better. She is simply a dumb girl who needs a man to guide her through life.
This doesn’t include the weird undertones of Bonrad. Both characters are shown to be in love with who they were as kids, not the adults they currently are or even the teenagers who dated. The “romantic” flashbacks are them as kids and that is what they can only talk about. The infinity, Junior Mint, etc. It’s a couple whose bond is only nostalgia and past memories. So having Belly make her big decision due to seeing a picture of her 6 year old self makes the ship… very weird. Not to mention how Belly is infantilised with Conrad and how much their dynamic resembles the older man/younger girl dynamic despite the 2 year age gap. Its weird and the Christmas photos where she wears the childish pajamas while Conrad looks like a grown man doesn’t help. Also add in the weird sex scene in 3x05 where Conrad talks about wanting to protect innocence about Susannah’s illness (weird way to view your girlfriend) but proceeds to have sex with her at the same time. Its as if he gets turned on by her childish naivety.
Ultimately the show’s message is that you shouldn’t grow up and that your first love is the only person you should be with even if the relationship was toxic. A guy who disrespects you, crosses boundaries, insults you, called her a mistake, took her virginity without saying “I love you”, etc is someone to aim for. Why? Simply because he was her first love.
Belly showed significantly more growth and maturity in S2 when she was only 17 years old vs the woman she turned out to be at 22 years old. She regressed to a child because that is the only way for Bonrad to stay together. She had to unlearn everything in order to be with Conrad. Jenny had to degrade her character because she believes her misogynistic writing is superior. In the end, Belly doesn’t see her family for a year and doesn’t speak to anyone significant outside of Conrad in the finale. Her and Conrad are shown to be isolated when they go to the beach house which is a sharp contrast with Jeremiah being with all his loved ones for his day.
Belly never got to truly grow as a woman and as a 22 year old, her mentality is closer to a teenager instead. Her agency disappeared this season and she became a passive woman whose decisions were constantly undermined by the characters and narrative. But that is okay, because of infinity ♾️
First time I’ve seen a coming of age show that discourages the protagonist from growing up. The lack of backlash to how her character have been written explains a lot about the political climate. It’s ultimately a show for conservatives, whether Jenny realises it or not. Its a show that believes woman doesn’t exist without a man and that her words shouldn’t be trusted unless its regarding Conrad. And when Belly says no, she really means yes.
the whole “selwyn CRAVES bree” and having him ACTUALLY QUITE LITERALLY gnawing at the bars of his enclosure and burning himself just to even get to her SCENT?? feral sel?? i was yelling

I love seeing certain takes about certain characters and going "congrats. You've fallen for the front they put up"
the dynamic between two people who love a third person so much and come to understand each other because of that is so important to me. you would put them first, and so would i. you understand why we have to save them from themself. i trust you with their life, and so, that means more than if i trusted you with mine. the love doesn't have to be the same, but it's powerful enough that you understand why you're not the only satellite drawn into their orbit.
My favorite relationship dynamic in fiction is a worshipper and their God. Not a literal God, but their God. The only thing in the whole world that matters to them. I will live for you, I would die for you, I would kill for you. My only moral compass is You. You can do no wrong in my eyes and I will never stray from your side. I was born to meet you and to love you. You are the only being I pray to. Your life isn’t just my passion, it’s my religion. You don’t think you’re anything special but you don’t see what I see. You don’t see that you’re the only person who’s ever made me feel this way. You don’t understand how beautiful you are to me and I will devote my entire life to making you understand and accept it.
doomed yaoi this doomed yuri that what about the ones left behind. what about the two vertices of a triangle whose apex was ripped off. what about the bitter, resentful, codependent bitches with a shared crater in their soul the size of a missing third, clinging to eachother in the aftermath of their loss desperately trying (or refusing) to move on. people who press together like the lips of a wound stitched shut
love triangle to ot3 not as in "i just think these characters should kiss" but as in there is a special bond between two people who love the same person more than themselves, more than anything else and eventually the rage and possessiveness will evaporate, you can't be scared and snarling forever, and when it does they will be left with the understanding that this is maybe the only person on earth who gets it. who gets what it means to be utterly consumed by this person, to love them so much you would open a vein at their request. this person, your "rival" perhaps understands you more than even the object of your affection. they have felt the same longing and the same fear and the same anger and the same desperation as you. they will go to the same lengths to keep your mutual beloved safe. and isn't that a little bit like looking in a mirror. isn't that a little bit like love.
